Pylodictis olivaris, the flathead catfish, is the second-largest catfish native to North America — surpassed only by the blue catfish — and one of the continent's most formidable freshwater predators. Adults routinely reach 23.5–35.5 in total length and can exceed 61 in; the rod-and-reel record from the Arkansas River stands at 69 in and 63 kg. Juveniles enter the trade for public aquaria and occasionally private ponds, but the flathead is emphatically not a home-aquarium fish: most individuals will outlive the tank that holds them. A scaleless, nocturnal ambush predator that locks its stiff pectoral spines when handled, P. olivaris demands rivers and large reservoirs, a diet of live or freshly killed prey, and cool temperate water — conditions that put it squarely in the public-aquarium or pond category for any serious keeper.

Taxonomy & naming

Pylodictis olivaris was described by the naturalist Constantine Samuel Rafinesque in 1818, originally placed by various authors in genera including Silurus, Pimelodus and Hopladelus before the monotypic genus Pylodictis was established. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Pylodictis as the sole member of its genus within the family Ictaluridae — the North American freshwater catfishes.

The genus name Pylodictis derives from Greek pylos (gate or mud) and diktyon (net), a reference to the fish's broad, flat head and muddy haunts. The species epithet olivaris is Latin for 'olive-coloured', describing the mottled yellow-olive to brown-grey camouflage patterning. The flathead's placement in Ictaluridae allies it with channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus), and the bullheads (Ameiurus), all native to North and Central America. No subspecies are recognised.

Morphology

The flathead catfish is unmistakable: a massive, depressed head with a wide, rounded snout, a projecting lower jaw, and small eyes set well forward give it the 'shovelhead' profile for which it is named. Body colour is a mottled patchwork of olive, yellow-brown and dark brown that breaks up the fish's outline against a gravel or root-strewn bottom. The tail fin is not deeply forked — unlike the blue catfish — but has a rounded to slightly notched posterior margin, useful for field identification.

Like all ictalurids the flathead is entirely scaleless, presenting naked skin across the body. Stiff, serrated and locking spines occupy the leading edge of the dorsal and both pectoral fins; these spines can lock erect when the fish is stressed and cause deep puncture wounds if the keeper reaches into a net or container without care. The fish is also capable of producing copious mucus as a stress response. Common adult size is 15–45 in TL; the published maximum from FishBase is 61 in TL, with a record specimen of 69 in at 63.45 kg from the Arkansas River.

Habitat

Pylodictis olivaris is native to the warm-water rivers, streams, lakes and reservoirs of the Mississippi River basin, including the Missouri, Ohio, Arkansas, Red and their major tributaries, with the native range extending south into the Gulf drainages of the United States and into Mexico. It is the dominant large predatory catfish of lowland rivers with moderate to low current, deep holes, undercut banks, and cover such as submerged logs, root masses and rocky ledges — precisely the concealment sites it uses to ambush prey.

The flathead is a temperate species. It tolerates a wide range of water temperatures across seasons and is not a tropical fish: it thrives in the seasonally varying, warm-summer / cold-winter rivers of North America and can be active under cold conditions. Water quality requirements are modest for a wild fish — it inhabits turbid and clear systems alike, tolerating a wide pH range — but it demands well-oxygenated water and is most abundant where deep, still holes adjoin flowing stretches.

Feeding

The flathead catfish is a strict, powerful piscivore by adulthood. Unlike the omnivorous channel catfish, it specialises strongly in live prey: crayfish when young, shifting decisively to live fish — bluegill, shad, carp, suckers, other catfish — as it grows. It is primarily a nocturnal ambush predator that holds position in cover and strikes at prey moving within range, rather than actively roaming like a blue catfish.

In any aquarium or pond context, the practical message is simple: every fish or invertebrate small enough to fit in the flathead's cavernous mouth will eventually disappear. Even large companions are at risk as the catfish grows. In a managed setting, large chunks of fresh fish, live bait fish, and carnivore pellets of appropriate size are taken, but the fish's preference for live prey and its predatory drive make it unsuitable for any mixed community. It should be the only fish in its enclosure unless tankmates are demonstrably too large to be eaten.

Mating

Breeding in Pylodictis olivaris follows the ictalurid pattern: the pair spawns in a cavity, undercut, crevice, hollow log, or excavated depression on the substrate. In the wild, spawning occurs from May through August in the southern USA, triggered by rising water temperatures — typically 70–81 °F — with peak activity often recorded in June and early July.

Pre-spawning behaviour involves the male actively courting the female, rubbing his barbels and belly along her body before leading her to the prepared nest site. Spawning lasts several hours; a large female can deposit up to 100,000 adhesive eggs in a single mass. The male then drives the female away and takes sole responsibility for the clutch.

Breeding

After spawning the male guards the egg mass with conspicuous ferocity, fanning the eggs with his fins to maintain oxygenation and physically removing sediment and debris. Incubation at warm summer temperatures typically takes 6–9 days. The male continues to guard the newly hatched larvae until they are free-swimming.

In natural bodies of water and commercial aquaculture ponds the flathead is bred routinely, with some operations using hormone induction to time spawning. Spawning in a home aquarium is not feasible: the fish's size requirements alone (a breeding pair occupies a significant territory in a large river system) and the scale of its breeding behaviour place successful reproduction firmly in the domain of public-aquarium facilities, private ponds, or fish culture stations. Home aquarium breeding is not documented.

In the aquarium

The flathead catfish is not a home-aquarium fish and should be presented honestly to any buyer. Common adult size is 23.5–35.5 in TL; individuals living 20 or more years at up to 61 in are documented. Even a modest specimen of 23.5 in requires a tank of several thousand litres, and the fish will continue growing. The species belongs in a large public aquarium exhibit, a managed outdoor pond, or a commercial facility — not a domestic display tank. Sellers who stock juveniles of this fish bear a responsibility to communicate this clearly.

For facilities equipped to house it: P. olivaris is a temperate species and should not be kept at tropical temperatures. A seasonal range of roughly 59–82 °F suits it well; sustained heat above 86 °F is stressful. As a scaleless ictalurid, its naked skin absorbs waterborne chemicals readily — copper-based treatments and many broad-spectrum medications should be used at conservative doses (typically half the standard dose) or avoided, as with other naked-skinned fish such as loaches and puffers. The stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines are a genuine hazard: never net this fish directly. Always move it using a large container, guiding it in rather than grabbing. The spines lock when the fish is alarmed and can drive deep puncture wounds into a keeper's hand. Provide substantial cover — logs, pipe sections, ledges — as the flathead is almost entirely nocturnal and rests under cover through the day.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Pylodictis olivaris as Least Concern (LC) based on a 2014 NatureServe assessment (reference e.T202701A18234613). The flathead is abundant across its native Mississippi basin range and supports important commercial and recreational fisheries throughout the central and southern United States.

Conservation attention is more focused on the species as an invasive than on its native population. Flatheads have been introduced widely east of the Appalachian Mountains and into western US states, where they establish self-sustaining populations and are considered serious invasive predators. In invaded rivers they suppress native prey populations, particularly sunfishes and other native catfishes. The U.S. Geological Survey's Nonindigenous Aquatic Species database documents widespread establishment outside the native range. For keepers: it is illegal in many jurisdictions to introduce this species to open water, and its trade and possession as a live animal may be regulated at the state level. Never release a flathead catfish.
