Trachelyichthys exilis, the pygmy driftwood catfish, is a slender, secretive auchenipterid from the Nanay River basin of Peru — one of the smallest members of a family defined by one of catfish's rarest reproductive strategies: internal fertilisation. The male carries a modified anal fin that functions as an intromittent organ, allowing him to fertilise the female internally; she then stores sperm and lays fertile eggs days or weeks later, entirely on her schedule. Small enough to keep in a 60-centimetre tank and gentle enough for a soft-water community, it is an underrated oddity for the patient aquarist who can provide dim light, soft cover, and regular live or frozen foods.

Taxonomy & naming

Trachelyichthys exilis was described by David W. Greenfield and Sandra C. Glodek in 1977 on the basis of specimens from the Nanay River drainage in Loreto, Peru. It is placed in the family Auchenipteridae — the driftwood catfishes, a diverse Neotropical family whose members are often found wedged among submerged wood and leaf litter in blackwater or clearwater streams. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Trachelyichthys exilis as the valid combination.

The genus Trachelyichthys is small, containing only a handful of species. It sits within the Auchenipterinae, the largest of the two auchenipterid subfamilies, alongside more familiar driftwood cats such as Tatia, Centromochlus, and Trachelyopterus. The specific epithet exilis is Latin for 'slender' or 'thin', an apt descriptor for the elongate, finely built body that distinguishes this species from the sturdier relatives in the family.

Morphology

Trachelyichthys exilis is a small, elongate catfish reaching a maximum of 3 in standard length; this is its genuine adult size, and it does not grow appreciably larger. The body is noticeably slender — more so than most auchenipterids — with a depressed, broad head, short barbels, and a moderately forked caudal fin. Colouration tends toward pale brown to buff, with variable darker speckling or faint banding along the flanks; the venter is paler.

The skin is entirely scaleless and unarmoured — a characteristic of all auchenipterids and a point with direct care implications (see 'In the aquarium'). The dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff, locking spines that can tangle in a net and deliver a sharp jab to an unwary handler; always move this fish in a container rather than netting it. Males possess a noticeably modified anal fin that forms the intromittent organ used during internal fertilisation.

Habitat

This species is known from the Nanay River basin, a blackwater tributary of the upper Amazon draining Loreto Department in northeastern Peru. The Nanay's waters are characteristically soft and mildly acidic, stained brown by dissolved tannins and organic acids leaching from decaying vegetation. The substrate is typically fine sand and silt overlaid with drifted leaves and submerged wood — the structural habitat from which driftwood catfishes take their name.

Reported aquarium parameters from captive specimens — 72–77 °F, pH 6.5–7.0, hardness 8–15 °dH — are consistent with the soft, near-neutral conditions typical of Peruvian Amazonian tributaries. Unlike many Amazonian blackwater species, it tolerates a modest range of hardness and does not demand extreme acidity, but it is decidedly a warm, soft-to-neutral river fish and should not be kept in hard, alkaline conditions.

Feeding

Trachelyichthys exilis is an omnivorous microphage, foraging close to the substrate for small invertebrates, worms, and organic detritus. The Seriously Fish account notes that unlike many Auchenipterids, this species is willing to feed during daylight hours — a useful trait in a mixed community where nocturnal specialists can be out-competed by bolder tankmates.

In the aquarium it does best on live or frozen foods: bloodworm, micro-worm, and small earthworm pieces are all accepted readily. Sinking pellets and quality frozen foods are also taken. Feed a varied diet to maintain condition; a fish this size rarely needs more than one or two small feedings per day. Its modest dimensions mean it competes poorly with large or boisterous fish at feeding time, so keep it with suitably sized, placid companions.

Mating

The mating biology of Trachelyichthys exilis is what makes auchenipterids remarkable among catfishes: fertilisation is internal. The male's anal fin is structurally modified into an intromittent organ — functioning much like an external clasper — and during mating he uses it to deposit sperm directly into the female's body. The female then stores the sperm and can fertilise successive batches of eggs over an extended period, sometimes weeks after a single mating event.

This is exceptionally rare in teleost fishes and sets the driftwood catfishes apart from virtually every other catfish family. In the aquarium, a pair or small group should be conditioned with varied live and frozen foods; the modified male anal fin provides a reliable means of sexing adults once the fish are mature. Females are generally fuller-bodied than males when in breeding condition.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Trachelyichthys exilis has been achieved but is not routinely documented in the hobby literature; the species is uncommon in the trade and detailed breeding accounts are sparse. The general auchenipterid pattern is that eggs are laid adhesively in small batches on surfaces such as broad leaves, wood, or the aquarium glass; parental care after laying is minimal to absent, as is typical for the family.

A soft, warm, tannin-rich setup mimicking the Nanay blackwater — low light, leaf litter, temperature around 73–77 °F, pH 6.5–7.0 — is likely to be the most productive environment for conditioning and any breeding attempt. The internal-fertilisation mechanism means that if a female has been housed with males previously, she may deposit fertile eggs even in the absence of a male at the time. Eggs and fry should be removed to a separate container, as this species does not guard them.

In the aquarium

A 60-centimetre tank is a practical minimum for a small group, and the species' adult size of 3 in means it genuinely fits a modest aquarium — no size trap here, provided the aquarist verifies they are buying this species and not a juvenile of a larger auchenipterid. Furnish the tank with driftwood, broad leaves (Indian almond leaf is ideal), subdued lighting, and fine substrate; this is a fish that needs cover and feels exposed in a bare, brightly lit setup.

The scaleless skin is the critical care point: Trachelyichthys exilis, like all auchenipterids, lacks the armour of corydoras or the scales of larger catfishes. It is more sensitive to copper-based medications and some common treatments — when disease arises, half-dose is the conservative starting point, and copper should be avoided unless no alternative exists. The locking dorsal and pectoral spines tangle in nets and can jab the keeper; always move the fish with a smooth container or bag rather than a net.

This is a peaceful, non-predatory species at its adult size and a good citizen in a community of soft-water fishes of similar scale — small tetras, pencilfish, smaller corydoras, or dwarf cichlids. It is reported to feed during the day as well as after dark, which makes it more visible than many catfishes. Keep it in a group of three or more; solitary specimens are shy and rarely seen.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Trachelyichthys exilis as Least Concern in 2014, reflecting a judgement that the species is not currently at risk of extinction. Its known range is centred on the Nanay River basin of Peru, a drainage that retains substantial forest cover in its upper reaches, though the Nanay watershed faces ongoing pressure from logging, oil exploration, and land conversion in the broader Loreto region.

Aquarium trade specimens are wild-collected, as captive breeding at commercial scale is not established for this species; collection for the ornamental fishery represents a low-level but direct pressure. Monitoring of wild populations and sustainable collection management would be appropriate given how narrowly endemic this catfish appears to be. Aquarists who do breed it successfully contribute to reducing demand on wild stocks.
