Taxonomy & naming
Aspidoras albater was described by the Dutch ichthyologists Han Nijssen and Isaäc Isbrücker in 1976, in their monographic treatment of the genus Aspidoras, from the rio Tocantinzinha near São João da Aliança, in the upper rio Tocantins system of Goiás State, Brazil. The genus Aspidoras was erected by Rodolpho von Ihering in 1907; its name combines Greek aspís ('shield') with the '-doras' of Corydoras, the larger genus it most resembles. Aspidoras is set apart from Corydoras chiefly by an osteological detail — a paired (dual) cranial fontanelle rather than the single fontanelle of Corydoras — together with its generally smaller eyes and body.
The species sits firmly within the subfamily Corydoradinae of the armoured-catfish family Callichthyidae. The sweeping 2024 revision of the Corydoradinae by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues, which split the old grab-bag genus Corydoras into several lineages (Brochis, Hoplisoma, Osteogaster, Gastrodermus and others), left Aspidoras standing as its own valid genus; A. albater therefore remains Aspidoras albater under current Catalog of Fishes usage. A more local taxonomic upheaval came in 2022, when Tencatt, Britto and co-authors revised the whole genus and synonymised two previously recognised species — A. eurycephalus and A. taurus — into an expanded A. albater, trimming the genus from twenty-five to eighteen valid species.
Morphology
This is a small, short-bodied catfish reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length, the females typically a little larger and deeper-bodied than males. Like all corydoradines it is armoured rather than scaled, with two longitudinal rows of overlapping bony plates down each flank and a hard, helmeted head; three pairs of short barbels fringe the small, downturned mouth. In keeping with the genus, the eyes are noticeably small and the head comparatively broad.
The colour pattern is what gives the species both its diagnosis and its name: a pale tan to whitish ground overlaid with solid black or dark-brown blotches and oblique bars across the body — roughly four distinct dark crossbars are a useful field mark — with further dark spotting on the dorsal and caudal fins. In life the flanks carry a faint iridescent sheen over the pale base. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each bear a stiff leading spine, the usual corydoradine defence.
Habitat
Aspidoras albater is endemic to the upper rio Tocantins basin on the elevated cerrado plateau of central Brazil, in Goiás State, where it lives in clear, shallow, flowing streams and small rivers over sand and gravel. These are warm upland tropical waters: recorded temperatures sit around 72–75 °F, the water is soft to moderately hard (to roughly 20 dGH) and slightly acidic to neutral, with pH around 6.0–7.3.
The species has also turned up in the cave systems of the region — specimens are known from subterranean stream reaches such as the Anésio caves of Goiás — reflecting how the karst landscape of the upper Tocantins links surface and underground waters. Like other corydoradines it is a facultative air-breather, periodically darting to the surface to gulp air that it absorbs through a vascularised hindgut, an adaptation suited to warm, sometimes oxygen-poor shallows.
Feeding
Aspidoras albater is a benthic micro-omnivore and detritivore, like its relatives. It works steadily over sand and fine gravel, sifting the substrate with its barbels and downturned mouth to extract small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — along with organic detritus and biofilm, expelling cleaned sediment through the gill openings. Its small size and small mouth restrict it to correspondingly small prey. In aquaria it readily takes sinking pellets and wafers, frozen and live foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and the fine fallen food its tankmates miss.
Mating
Detailed wild spawning observations for A. albater specifically are scant, but Aspidoras follow the well-known corydoradine pattern. These are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond; when a female ripens, the group becomes active and a male pairs with her in the characteristic 'T-position,' his body set at right angles to her head. The female clasps a small number of eggs in a basket formed by her pelvic fins and presses them onto a cleaned surface — a leaf, stone or aquarium glass — and the sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time, until the clutch is complete. The adhesive eggs are then left without further attention from the parents.
Breeding
Aspidoras albater has been bred in aquaria, where it behaves like a small, typical corydoradine egg-scatterer. Spawning is generally encouraged by a cool, generous water change that imitates the onset of the rains, dropping the temperature a few degrees, with a group skewed toward more males than females. The sticky eggs are deposited in small batches on firm surfaces and receive no parental care — indeed the adults will eat them — so breeders move either the eggs or the parents. After a few days the eggs hatch, and once the yolk sac is absorbed the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods. Precise clutch sizes for this species are not well documented in the literature.
In the aquarium
A peaceful, active little catfish, A. albater is an undemanding subject for the keeper who can meet a few real needs. It is strongly shoaling and should be kept in groups of six or more, when it is confident and constantly busy; kept singly it is shy and stressed. A modest tank suits a group well, since bottom area matters far more than height.
Substrate is the key detail: provide soft sand or very smooth, fine rounded gravel, because these fish feed by sifting and sharp or coarse grit erodes and infects their barbels. Keep the bottom clean and well-oxygenated with a gentle current, and aim for the species' clear, warm, soft-to-medium water (about 72–77 °F). It is entirely peaceful and well suited to a quiet community of small tetras, dwarf cichlids and similar calm fish. As with all corydoradines, handle it with a container rather than a net to avoid the fin spines catching, and transport it carefully, since a distressed corydoradine can release skin toxins that may prove dangerous in the small volume of a bag.
Conservation
Aspidoras albater is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern. The species is reasonably widespread within the upper Tocantins drainage and faces no specific, severe or imminent threat at present, though as a plateau endemic of central Brazil its clear-water streams are exposed to the region's broad pressures — agricultural expansion across the cerrado, water abstraction, siltation and pollution. The 2022 revision, which folded the former A. eurycephalus and A. taurus into A. albater, also means that material once spread across three names is now understood as a single, more broadly distributed species, which on balance supports its low-concern status.
