Taxonomy & naming
Aspidoras aldebaran was described in 2022 by Luiz Tencatt, Marcelo Britto, the late Isaäc Isbrücker and Carla Pavanelli, in their revision of the genus Aspidoras published in Neotropical Ichthyology. The type locality is in the upper rio Araguaia basin of Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The species had long gone unrecognised because part of its material lay within the type series of the closely allied A. taurus; on re-examination its distinct morphology and colour pattern showed it to be a separate, undescribed species — one that hobbyists had already catalogued under the collection code CW141.
The genus Aspidoras (von Ihering, 1907) is a compact, almost entirely Brazilian group within the subfamily Corydoradinae of the family Callichthyidae. Its members are distinguished from Corydoras chiefly by a paired cranial fontanelle and generally small eyes. The 2024 Dias–Tencatt revision of the Corydoradinae split the old Corydoras into several genera but retained Aspidoras as a valid lineage, so under current Catalog of Fishes usage the species stands as Aspidoras aldebaran. The describing authors place it within their 'Lineage 2' of the genus.
Morphology
This is one of the smaller corydoradines, with males reaching roughly 1.5 in and females about 1.5 in in standard length. The body shows the typical Aspidoras plan: short and deep, armoured with two rows of overlapping bony plates, a hard helmeted head with small eyes, and three pairs of short barbels around a downturned mouth. The describing authors diagnose it on fine osteological points — among them a well-developed parapophysis of the complex vertebra and a strongly developed inner laminar expansion of the first infraorbital bone.
In colour it is a pale-bodied fish patterned with dark markings, and one useful feature separating it from its closest relatives is the presence of small black spots on the dorsal fin, a pattern not shared with congeners such as A. azaghal, A. depinnai and A. kiriri. Females are not only larger but rounder-bodied than males, especially when carrying eggs.
Habitat
Aspidoras aldebaran occurs in the upper rio Araguaia basin (with records also referred to the neighbouring upper Paraguay basin) on the central Brazilian plateau in Mato Grosso. These are clear, shallow, flowing waters of the cerrado highlands — small streams and brooks over sand and gravel. Reported aquarium-relevant parameters for the species are warm and gently acidic: temperatures of about 72–77 °F and pH around 6.0–7.0, with soft to moderately hard water.
As a corydoradine it is a facultative air-breather, rising periodically to gulp atmospheric air absorbed through a modified, vascularised hindgut — an adaptation that lets small callichthyids persist in warm, shallow waters where dissolved oxygen can run low.
Feeding
Like its relatives, A. aldebaran is a small benthic omnivore and detritivore. It forages over the bottom, using its barbels and protrusible, downturned mouth to sift sand and fine gravel for tiny invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms — and for the biofilm and organic detritus that coat the substrate, passing cleaned sediment out through the gills. Its very small size limits it to correspondingly small food items. In the aquarium it accepts sinking micro-pellets and wafers, small frozen and live foods, and fine particles its tankmates overlook.
Mating
No species-specific spawning account has been published for A. aldebaran, but it can be expected to follow the standard corydoradine pattern shared across Aspidoras. These are egg-laying shoalers without pair bonds; a ripe female and an attendant male adopt the classic 'T-position,' the male set at right angles to the female's head. The female holds a few eggs at a time in a pelvic-fin basket and presses them onto a cleaned surface, repeating the act until dozens of adhesive eggs are distributed. There is no pairing for life and no guarding of the spawning site.
Breeding
Because A. aldebaran was described so recently, detailed captive-breeding data remain limited, but it should respond like other small Aspidoras. Spawning is typically prompted by a cool, generous water change simulating the rainy season, with the group skewed toward more males than females. The sticky eggs are laid in small batches on firm surfaces and given no parental care — the adults will eat them — so the eggs or the parents are separated. Eggs hatch within a few days, and the fry, once their yolk is absorbed, take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods. Reliable figures for clutch size in this species are not yet established.
In the aquarium
A diminutive, peaceful catfish, A. aldebaran suits a quiet, well-kept small-fish community for the aquarist willing to meet a few corydoradine basics. It is a shoaling species and should be kept in groups of six or more, where it is active and confident; isolated individuals are timid and stressed. Because bottom area matters more than tank height, a modest footprint serves a group well.
Provide soft sand or very smooth fine gravel — sharp substrate abrades and infects the barbels these fish use to feed — and keep the bottom clean, well-oxygenated and gently flowing. Match the species' clear, warm, soft and slightly acidic water (about 72–77 °F, pH near neutral to mildly acidic). It mixes well with small tetras, dwarf cichlids and other calm community fish. Handle it with a container rather than a net to avoid snagging the fin spines, and transport it carefully, since a stressed corydoradine can release skin toxins that may endanger the whole group in the small volume of a bag.
Conservation
Aspidoras aldebaran has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, which is unsurprising for a species described only in 2022; its conservation status is therefore best recorded as not evaluated. It is known from a restricted area of the upper Araguaia (and adjacent upper Paraguay) headwaters in Mato Grosso, a region under the broad and growing pressures of the Brazilian agricultural frontier — land clearance across the cerrado, water abstraction, siltation and pollution. A narrowly distributed plateau endemic of this kind warrants attention, and a proper assessment would be needed before any firm statement about its risk could be made.
