Taxonomy & naming
The fairy cory was described in 1970 by Stanley Weitzman of the Smithsonian and Han Nijssen of Amsterdam, in a paper naming several new corys from Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil. The type locality is the Río Conambo at the mouth of the River Shione, in the Río Tigre system of Pastaza State, Ecuador — a tributary tangle on the Ecuador–Peru border. The specific name atropersonatus, 'black-masked,' fixes on the single feature everyone notices first: the dark bar through the eye.
For more than half a century it sat in Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, the vast genus that holds most of the hobby's 'cory cats' (family Callichthyidae). That genus had grown to well over 170 species and molecular work showed it was not a single natural lineage. In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a large revision (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, doi:10.1093/zoolinnean/zlae053) that split it into several genera — among them Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus and Osteogaster. Under that scheme the fairy cory becomes Hoplisoma atropersonatum, and FishBase, Planet Catfish and other databases now list it that way. The change is recent, and the aquarium trade still overwhelmingly says 'Corydoras atropersonatus,' so we keep that as the heading while noting the current combination. The fish is also closely confused with a near-identical spotted relative sometimes traded as the same thing, and Planet Catfish flags wild forms labelled 'cf. atropersonatus' — a reminder that the spotted corys are a thicket of look-alikes.
Morphology
This is a small, neat cory: FishBase gives a maximum of about 2 in standard length, and most hobby accounts put adults at roughly 2 in total length, with females growing a little larger and notably broader across the body than males. Like all corys it is armoured rather than scaled, with two rows of overlapping bony plates down each flank meeting in a ridge along the back, a hard helmet of a head, and three pairs of barbels around the downturned mouth for sifting the substrate. Each of the dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins is stiffened by a sharp leading spine.
The colour is what sells it. The body is a pale, pinkish to greyish cream, finely and evenly peppered with small dark spots that continue onto the dorsal and caudal fins. Cutting across this delicate spotting is a single bold black mask running through and around the eye — the 'persona' of the name — which gives the otherwise pastel fish a sharp, alert expression. There is no large blotch or stripe elsewhere; the overall effect is soft and speckled, which is exactly what the common name 'fairy' is reaching for.
Habitat
Corydoras atropersonatus lives in the upper Amazon basin straddling eastern Ecuador and northern Peru — the Río Tigre, Río Conambo, Río Nanay and neighbouring systems, the same web of forest tributaries that drains toward the Amazon near Iquitos. FishBase summarises its range simply as the upper Amazon River basin.
These are warm, soft, gently flowing forest waters: shaded streams and pools over sand and leaf litter, often stained and acidic where they drain rainforest. Wild-water measurements behind the FishBase and Planet Catfish figures sit at a cool-to-warm 70–75 °F and a pH band from acidic to neutral (roughly 5.6–7.0), with soft, mineral-poor water. Like other corys it is a facultative air-breather, periodically darting to the surface to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a vascularised hindgut — an adaptation that lets it cope with the warm, oxygen-poor margins it favours. It is a fish of shallow water; it is not found at depth.
Feeding
The fairy cory is a benthic omnivore. In the wild it works the bottom continuously, nosing barbels-first through sand and leaf litter to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and the organic detritus that collects on the substrate. It is an opportunist, not a specialist, which is part of why it adapts so readily to captivity. In the aquarium it takes sinking pellets and tablets, frozen and live bloodworm, Daphnia, Tubifex and brine shrimp, and grazes whatever settles to the bottom — but it should be fed deliberately rather than left to scavenge leftovers, which is a common and slow way to starve a group of corys.
Mating
Like other corys, C. atropersonatus is an egg-laying shoaler with no pair bond and the family's distinctive 'T-position' courtship. When a female comes into condition the group grows active; a male presses alongside and across her head at roughly right angles, forming the T, and she appears to take his milt directly. Sperm is thought to pass quickly through her gut and out to fertilise the small clutch of eggs she holds clasped in a basket formed by her pelvic fins. She then swims to a site she has cleaned — a leaf, a stone, a stem or the aquarium glass — and presses the sticky eggs into place. The sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time, until the spawning is spent.
Breeding
The fairy cory has been bred in aquaria, and the recipe is the familiar cory one, though it spawns less freely than the bulletproof bronze or peppered corys. A well-fed group is conditioned on live and frozen foods, then triggered with a large water change using cooler, softer water that imitates the arrival of rain. The adhesive eggs are scattered in small batches over cleaned surfaces and receive no parental care — the adults will eat them given the chance, so breeders move either the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in a few days and the fry, after absorbing the yolk sac, take microworm, baby brine shrimp and fine powdered foods. Published clutch sizes and exact incubation times for this species are not well documented; Planet Catfish lists only a couple of breeding reports, so it is best regarded as an achievable but not casual project for a keeper who already breeds easier corys.
In the aquarium
This is a rewarding, undemanding community cory with a few real requirements. First, it is a shoaling fish that is genuinely stressed alone or in pairs — keep six or more and they reward you with constant, confident foraging. A group is comfortable in a tank of around 23.5 in with a generous open bottom; footprint matters far more than height.
Second, substrate is not decoration. Provide soft sand or very smooth, rounded fine gravel: corys feed by sifting, and sharp or coarse gravel abrades and infects their barbels, leaving the stubby, eroded faces that are a hallmark of poor husbandry. Border the open feeding area with driftwood, leaf litter and planting, and provide shade. Water should be soft, slightly acidic and clean, on the cooler side of tropical (about 72–77 °F); this is not a fish for a hot tank. It is utterly peaceful and suits a quiet community of small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish and dwarf cichlids — never boisterous or large tankmates. Two standard cory cautions apply: the fin spines can tangle in a net, so a cup is safer for moving them, and a badly stressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in the small volume of a bag or bucket, can poison the whole group, so transport them with care.
Conservation
Corydoras atropersonatus is listed by the IUCN as Data Deficient, assessed in 2014 — meaning there was not enough information on its range, population and threats to place it in a risk category. That is not the same as 'safe': it reflects how little is formally known about a small, locally distributed Amazonian fish. In practice it is collected for the aquarium trade and appears regularly, if not abundantly, in shops, and much of the supply is wild-caught from the Ecuador–Peru border region rather than commercially bred at the scale of the common corys. The broad pressures on western Amazonian headwaters — deforestation, road-building, oil and agricultural activity and the pollution that follows — all bear on the shaded forest streams it depends on. A firmer conservation picture awaits both better field data and the settling of the spotted-cory taxonomy, since some look-alike populations now lumped with it may prove to be separate, narrower-ranged species.
