Anablepsoides iridescens is a small, non-annual rivuline killifish native to the upper Amazon basin of Peru, described from forest-edge habitat near the research station of Jenaro Herrera. First placed in the broad catch-all genus Rivulus, it was reclassified to Anablepsoides by Wilson Costa in 2011 following molecular and morphological revisions that restructured the Neotropical killifish radiation. Reaching about 3 in total length, it is a typical plant-spawning rivuline of permanent forest streams and pools, assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2020.

Taxonomy & naming

Anablepsoides iridescens was described by Fels and de Rham in 1981, published in the Revue française d'Aquariologie Herpétologie (volume 8, number 3). The type locality is precisely documented in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as the 'Arboretum', 2 mi from Jenaro Herrera on the road to Colonia Angamos, at approximately 4°53′S, 73°47′W in Loreto Department, Peru. The holotype is deposited at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Genève (MHNG 2079.57).

The species was originally assigned to Rivulus, the historically sprawling Neotropical killifish genus that served as a wastebasket for most New World non-annual rivulines. Wilson Costa's 2011 taxonomic revision broke Rivulus sensu lato into numerous genera, and iridescens was transferred to the genus Anablepsoides, a placement subsequently adopted by Nielsen (2016) and Valdesalici and Gil (2019). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Anablepsoides iridescens (Fels & de Rham, 1981), with Rivulus iridescens as the original combination now treated as a synonym.

The specific epithet iridescens is Latin for 'iridescent' or 'rainbow-like', referring to the shimmering, colour-shifting quality of the flanks that is characteristic of the species under directional light — a trait common in small rivulines with metallic scale pigmentation.

Morphology

Anablepsoides iridescens is a slender, fusiform killifish reaching a maximum of 3 in total length (FishBase). The body form is typical of the genus: elongated, laterally compressed toward the caudal peduncle, with the dorsal fin inserted well behind the midpoint of the body and positioned opposite the anal fin. The caudal fin is rounded to slightly lanceolate.

The species' most immediately striking feature is the metallic, iridescent sheen of the flanks from which the name is drawn. Males display more vivid colouration than females, with metallic blue-green or teal iridescence overlying a brownish or olive base, and reddish or orange markings on the fins and posterior flanks during display and breeding condition. Females are typically more uniformly olive-brown with subtler iridescence, a pattern of reduced ornamentation common across the rivuline radiation and functionally linked to cryptic protection while guarding eggs deposited on vegetation.

Habitat

The known range of Anablepsoides iridescens is restricted to the upper Amazon basin of Peru. The type locality — a managed arboretum at the edge of the Jenaro Herrera research settlement in Loreto — lies in the seasonally flooded lowland Amazonian forest of northeastern Peru, a landscape of oxbow lakes, blackwater pools, and permanent to near-permanent forest streams that persist through the dry season.

As a non-annual killifish, the species inhabits water bodies that do not dry out completely. In the Loreto lowlands this means shaded forest creeks, edge pools, and the quiet margins of larger drainage channels where emergent and submerged vegetation provides cover and spawning substrate. FishBase characterises it as freshwater, benthopelagic, and non-migratory, with a temperature range of 72–79 °F appropriate for the warm, humid Amazonian lowland climate. Water chemistry at similar Loreto localities is typically soft and slightly acidic, consistent with rain-fed forest soils and the organic-rich black or clearwater systems of the Peruvian Amazon.

Feeding

Like most small rivulines, Anablepsoides iridescens is an opportunistic micropredator, taking small invertebrates at and near the water surface and in the water column. In the wild this includes aquatic and terrestrial insects, small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton — the food items available in forest-edge pools and stream margins of the upper Amazon. The slightly upturned mouth, typical of surface-oriented rivulines, facilitates capture of items at or just below the surface film.

In captivity the species accepts a broad range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods, including Drosophila, chironomid larvae (bloodworm), Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, and tubifex. Prepared micropellets formulated for surface-feeding fish may also be accepted once the fish has settled. Varied feeding with appropriately sized prey maintains condition and encourages natural colour development in males.

Mating

Anablepsoides iridescens is a non-annual killifish and a plant-spawner, placing it at the opposite end of the reproductive spectrum from the seasonal peat-burying annuals with which killifish are most popularly associated. Rather than depositing eggs in dried substrate that must weather a drought before hatching, this species spawns continuously or semi-continuously in permanent water, depositing individual adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, floating plant roots, or spawning mops placed near the surface or substrate.

Males display to females with lateral spreading of the fins, erection of the dorsal and caudal fins to maximise the iridescent flank signal, and close parallel swimming. Spawning occurs with a brief body-press alongside the female, releasing one or a few eggs per encounter. This protracted, low-clutch-per-event strategy distributes reproductive effort across many small events rather than concentrating it in a single large spawning, consistent with life in stable, predator-present permanent water where offspring survival benefits from staggered hatching over time.

Breeding

Eggs of Anablepsoides iridescens are adhesive and relatively large for the body size, attached singly to vegetation or mop fibres and incubated in water without any diapause period. Incubation time is temperature-dependent; at 75–79 °F hatching typically occurs within two to three weeks. The larvae are well-developed at hatching and become free-swimming quickly, immediately able to take appropriately sized live foods.

In the aquarium, pairs or trios (one male, one or two females) can be maintained in a small, well-planted or mop-equipped tank. Eggs are removed periodically from the mop or vegetation and incubated separately in shallow water to prevent predation by the adults. The fry are robust relative to annual killifish fry and less demanding: they can take newly hatched Artemia nauplii and microworm from the outset. Because the fish is not annual, it is comparatively long-lived and may breed over an extended period with good conditioning. FishBase notes that the species is considered difficult to maintain in captivity, possibly reflecting sensitivity to water-quality fluctuation or specific dietary requirements not yet fully documented.

In the aquarium

Anablepsoides iridescens is primarily a fish for specialist killifish hobbyists rather than a mainstream aquarium species. FishBase notes it as difficult to maintain, and the combination of its restricted natural distribution, specific habitat associations, and comparative rarity in the trade means that captive experience with the species is limited and not widely documented.

Where kept, the standard rivuline approach applies: a small, densely planted or mop-equipped aquarium of 10–20 US gal, with a tight-fitting lid (all rivulines are capable jumpers), soft acidic water in the 72–79 °F range, dim lighting, and a quiet, uncrowded environment. Males can be aggressive toward each other and toward rival-sized fish; a single pair or a harem group with one male is the typical arrangement. Small live and frozen invertebrate foods form the core diet. The American Killifish Association documents this species under its former name Rivulus iridescens and the species is known within killifish circles, though reportedly not widely distributed in the hobby.

The iridescent colouration — the feature that inspired the scientific name — is best appreciated in low, angled light that catches the metallic flank pigmentation, and males in optimal condition display the full intensity of that sheen during courtship.

Conservation

Anablepsoides iridescens is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent evaluation conducted in December 2020. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence in the Loreto region of Peru, an area that retains substantial intact lowland Amazonian forest despite increasing pressure from agricultural expansion, colonisation, and hydrocarbon extraction. The Jenaro Herrera research area where the type locality is situated has historically provided a degree of de facto protection through its association with the Centro de Investigaciones de Jenaro Herrera, a research station managed by the Instituto de Investigaciones de la Amazonía Peruana.

Nonetheless, the species has a restricted known range, and like many locality-specific rivulines it is potentially vulnerable to habitat degradation at a local level. Lowland forest streams and pools in Loreto face threats from deforestation for agriculture and cattle ranching, sedimentation from land-clearing, and the broader pressures of infrastructure development in the Peruvian Amazon. Because the species is not annual and depends on permanent water bodies, it lacks the resilience of egg-burying annuals whose dormant eggs can survive temporary desiccation. Ongoing monitoring of the Loreto populations and clarification of the species' true distributional extent within the upper Amazon drainage would strengthen the basis for future conservation assessments.
