Taxonomy & naming
Britto's cory was described in 2016 by Luiz F. C. Tencatt and Willian M. Ohara, in a paper naming two new Corydoras species from the rio Madeira basin of Brazil (Neotropical Ichthyology 14(1):e150063). The epithet honours Marcelo Ribeiro de Britto for his extensive contributions to the taxonomy and systematics of the Corydoradinae. It was described, as is conventional, in the broad genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803 of the family Callichthyidae.
The genus proved not to be a single natural lineage, and in 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues — Tencatt being one of the describers of this very species — published a large molecular revision (DOI 10.1093/zoolinnean/zlae053) that split Corydoras into several genera. Under that classification this species is placed in Brochis, becoming Brochis brittoi, the combination now used by FishBase and the specialist Corydoras World site; for that reason we give the display genus as Brochis. Because the species is recent and little-known in the hobby it carries no entrenched trade name, but we keep the familiar scientificName heading 'Corydoras brittoi' under which it was described.
Morphology
This is a small cory, reaching about 1.5 in in standard length, with a short, deep body and an oval cross-section. Like all the group it is armoured rather than scaled, with two overlapping rows of bony plates down each flank and the hard, helmeted bony head, and three pairs of barbels fringe the downturned mouth.
The describers diagnose it by a combination of characters: the posterior margin of the dorsal-fin spine bears laminar serrations directed back towards the spine's origin; there are two longitudinal black stripes along the flanks; sparse black chromatophores, without any conspicuous pattern, mark the front of the dorsal fin; and the head lacks the bold marbled markings seen in some relatives. The caudal fin carries black spots, some aligned into transverse bars, and the dorsal-fin spine is brownish. It is the twin flank stripes that most readily flag the species in the field.
Habitat
Corydoras brittoi is known from the rio Madeira basin of Brazil, in the south-western Amazon. The type material came from a small clear-water stream, two to three metres wide and roughly half a metre to two metres deep, with well-preserved riparian forest along its banks, a swift current, and a bottom of sand and dead leaves — a fast, shaded, leaf-littered headwater rather than a sluggish backwater.
FishBase records the species from shallow water, a depth range of roughly 0–7 ft, in a warm tropical setting. No detailed water-chemistry figures have been published for the type locality, but clear-water Madeira-basin forest streams of this kind are typically warm, soft and slightly acidic, with the well-oxygenated flow implied by the 'swift current' of the description.
Feeding
No dietary study has been carried out for this newly described species, but its anatomy and the substrate of its habitat point clearly to the group habit: a benthic omnivore and detritivore. It works the sand-and-leaf-litter bottom of its stream with its barbels, sifting for small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and organic detritus, expelling cleaned sand through the gills. Its assigned trophic level (around 3.0) is consistent with that mixed invertebrate-and-detritus diet. In the aquarium it would be expected to take the usual cory fare — sinking pellets and tablets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and small live foods delivered to the bottom.
Mating
Spawning has not been documented for C. brittoi, but the Corydoradinae share a highly uniform reproductive pattern, so the general account very probably applies. These are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. A ready female cleans a spawning site, and a courting male takes up the classic 'T-position', his body at right angles to her head; she appears to take milt directly, and a few adhesive eggs are clasped in a pelvic-fin basket and pressed onto the cleaned surface. The sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time, until the clutch is complete.
Breeding
There is no captive-breeding record for this recently described, little-kept species, so any account is by analogy with its relatives rather than direct observation, which we state plainly. In the corydoradines generally, spawning is often triggered by a cool, large water change mimicking the rainy season; the adhesive eggs are laid in small batches onto plants, wood or aquarium glass and receive no parental care, the adults eating them unless the eggs or parents are separated. Eggs typically hatch in three to five days, and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods once the yolk is absorbed. Whether C. brittoi conforms to this template awaits the first aquarists to spawn it.
In the aquarium
Britto's cory is essentially a wild, recently described species seldom if ever seen in the general trade, so practical aquarium experience with it is minimal; what follows is the standard care for a small, current-loving forest-stream cory. It is a shoaling fish and should be kept in a group of six or more over soft sand, because corys feed by sifting and sharp or coarse substrate damages their barbels.
The habitat data argue for a tank that reproduces a clear forest headwater: a clean sand bottom with leaf litter and wood, brisk, well-oxygenated flow, and warm, soft, slightly acidic water. It is a peaceful fish suited to small, calm community tankmates rather than anything boisterous. The familiar cautions hold: the fin spines tangle in nets, so a cup is safer, and a stressed cory can release a skin toxin that may kill the group in the confined volume of a bag or bucket, so move them with care.
Conservation
The IUCN assessed Corydoras brittoi as Least Concern in 2020, only a few years after its description. The assessment found no evidence of major threats at present. That said, it is a narrow-range species known from a small forest stream in the rio Madeira basin, and such headwaters are sensitive to deforestation, agriculture, road-building and the loss of the riparian vegetation that the type locality was specifically noted to retain. The Madeira basin in particular faces pressure from hydropower development and gold mining. As a species it is not currently considered at risk, but a restricted, recently described fish of this kind warrants continued attention as its region changes.
