The Madeira Brazilian Shield is where the Amazon's muddiest great river collides with its oldest, hardest rock. The Madeira itself is the Amazon's second-largest tributary — about 3,149 mi long, carrying a mean discharge near 31,200 cubic meters per second at its mouth (roughly 1.1 million cubic feet per second) and supplying on the order of 15% of the Amazon's water and as much as half of its sediment load. But this ecoregion is not the silt-laden mainstem so much as the country it cuts through: the interfluve between the Madeira and the Tapajós, where the Precambrian Brazilian Shield surfaces and a fan of clearwater tributaries — the Ji-Paraná, Jamari, Candeias, Aripuanã, Roosevelt, Marmelos and the headwaters of the Maués-Açu and Abacaxis — drain ancient crystalline basement. Between the Bolivian border and Porto Velho the river falls over a staircase of cachoeiras and rapids, and it is on two of those rapids that Brazil built the Santo Antônio and Jirau dams. The result is a system defined by a tension that runs through the whole story: whitewater versus clearwater, hard rock versus soft sediment, and now a free-flowing flood pulse versus a regulated one.
Geography & hydrology
The Madeira is born in the Bolivian Andes, formed where the Beni and the Mamoré join near the Brazil–Bolivia frontier, and from there it runs roughly 3,149 mi northeast across Rondônia and Amazonas before discharging into the Amazon near Itacoatiara — about 1,264 mi of that length inside Brazil (Goulding et al., Smithsonian Atlas of the Amazon, 2003; Santos et al., 2020). With a mean annual discharge on the order of 31,656 ft³/s at its confluence, it is the Amazon's second-largest tributary, and the Madeira Brazilian Shield freshwater ecoregion (FEOW 321) captures the mid-to-upper basins of the right-bank tributaries that drain the northern and western slopes of the Brazilian Shield, plus the upper Maués-Açu and Abacaxis between the Madeira and the Tapajós (Abell et al. / FEOW).
The defining geology is the contact between two worlds. Most of the ecoregion lies below 820 ft on soft Amazonian sediments, but it rises onto the hard crystalline basement of the Brazilian Shield, reaching above 1,262 ft in the Serra dos Pacaás-Novos. That basement is what produces the region's signature feature: a series of cataracts and rapids — the cachoeiras — strung along the river between the Bolivian border and Porto Velho. The Teotônio rapids and their neighbors are not scenery alone; they are biogeographic walls that have long blocked the upstream and downstream movement of many fish, sorting the fauna above and below the falls.
Hydrologically this is a strongly seasonal, flood-pulsed system rather than a lake. Peak flows arrive around March or April, and nearly all rivers below about 1,0 ft flood between December and May, drowning the lower courses of the Shield tributaries in seasonally inundated forest. That is itself notable: clearwater rivers like the Tapajós and Xingu carry relatively little flooded forest, but the lower Aripuanã, Ji-Paraná and their siblings develop deep igapó that the fish exploit. The climate is tropical-rainy with a short dry season, annual rainfall of roughly 2,250–2,29.5 in and mean air temperatures of 75–79 °F (about 75–79 °F).
Water & habitat
The ecoregion holds two contrasting water types in one drainage. The Madeira mainstem is classic Andean whitewater — turbid, café-au-lait brown, heavy with suspended silt weathered off young mountains, and carrying up to about half of the entire Amazon's sediment load. That mud is fertility: it builds nutrient-rich várzea floodplain along the trunk river, but it also keeps the water optically opaque, so sunlight and primary production are limited in the channel itself (Ríos-Villamizar et al., 2014; Ayes Rivera et al., Water, 2019).
Most of the right-bank tributaries that actually define the ecoregion are the opposite: nutrient-poor clearwater rivers draining the deeply weathered Shield. These run clearer and more transparent than the mainstem, low in dissolved minerals and suspended matter, with chemistry that swings toward the soft and slightly acidic over the white-sand and crystalline catchments. White-sand igapó forest lines clearwater rivers such as the Aripuanã, and submerged leaf litter, root tangles and sunken wood provide the structured cover that dwarf cichlids and many of the region's specialists depend on.
The habitat mosaic, then, runs from fast, rock-floored rapids and cataracts over the Shield, through deep clearwater channels, to seasonally flooded forest at low elevation and silt-fed floodplain along the Madeira trunk. The flood pulse is the organizing rhythm: at high water fish spread into the inundated forest to feed and spawn; at low water they concentrate back into channels and pools. As elsewhere in the Amazon, it is the annual rise and fall — not a thermocline — that governs feeding, breeding and migration here.
The cichlid fauna
Cichlids are a supporting cast rather than the headline act in this ecoregion — characiforms (tetras and their kin) make up more than half the species, the product of an adaptive radiation that began during South America's long Tertiary isolation. But the cichlids that are here are distinctive, and several are local endemics tied to particular Shield tributaries. The ecoregion counts 18 fish endemics overall, and the genera with multiple endemic species include both Aequidens and Crenicichla — the pike cichlids — alongside the recorded Aequidens gerciliae and a cluster of Crenicichla (acutirostris, hemera, isbrueckeri, marmorata, pellegrini, santosi) that hunt the channels, rapids and structured margins.
The eartheaters are the region's most charismatic cichlids. Geophagus mirabilis is a colorful sand-sifter described in 2014 as endemic to the rio Aripuanã, one of the ecoregion's signature clearwater Shield rivers — a reminder that these tributaries are still yielding new species. Satanoperca curupira, named for the curupira of Amazonian folklore, was described in 2018 from the rio Madeira basin in Rondônia, and it shares the bottom-sifting, sand-mouthing lifestyle with the wide-ranging demon eartheater Satanoperca jurupari. The dwarf cichlids are represented by several Apistogramma (acrensis, inconspicua, urteagai), the leaf-litter and shallow-margin specialists of the soft, structured clearwater. Rounding out the recorded fauna are the planktivorous, comb-toothed Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis and the small generalist Cichlasoma boliviense, a species whose range reaches up into the Bolivian headwaters of the system.
One footnote belongs to the hobby's most famous fish: the pineapple discus (a blackwater form of Symphysodon discus) occurs in the rio Abacaxis at the eastern edge of the ecoregion. It is not a Shield-tributary cichlid in the strict sense, but it underlines how this drainage straddles muddy whitewater, soft clearwater and pockets of true blackwater within a single basin.
Conservation
The dominant conservation story here is hydropower. Two of the world's largest run-of-river dams sit on the Madeira just above Porto Velho: Santo Antônio (installed capacity about 3,150 MW) and Jirau (about 3,750 MW), together around 7,300 MW, both built on what were natural rapids and brought online in 2012–2013. Santo Antônio's reservoir alone spans more than 54,600 hectares (about 135,000 acres). Marketed as low-impact because they are run-of-river rather than deep storage reservoirs, the dams nonetheless reorder the river (Santos et al., PMC, 2020; EJAtlas; Survival International).
Their clearest casualties are migratory fish. The Madeira is a corridor for the basin's marathon catfish — the dourada and other Brachyplatystoma — that travel thousands of kilometers between Andean spawning grounds and the estuary; the dams sit squarely across that route, and fish-ladder performance has been heavily questioned (Mongabay; Hauser et al., Neotropical Ichthyology). For the cichlids and the people who fish them, the deeper problem is the broken rhythm. By smoothing and re-timing the flood pulse — local fishers describe disruptive water-level swings, repiquetes, that no longer match the fish's instincts — the dams have scrambled where and when fish can be found. Community-based monitoring led by the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) documented up to a 90% drop in stocks at some downstream sites among the 65 species tracked, the disappearance of historically productive fishing grounds, and the near-vanishing of staples like tambaqui and pirarucu from communities such as Lago Puruzinho near Humaitá (Lourenço et al.; Mongabay, 2025). Humaitá fishers have been in a decade-long legal fight for compensation.
It is worth being honest about scale and uncertainty. The dam operators argue that the reservoirs are small and reproduce the river's natural hydrology, and that basin-wide averages are little changed; researchers counter that the basin-average framing hides exactly the local, spatial-temporal disruption that wrecks artisanal fisheries. Beyond the dams, the same pressures that grip the rest of the Amazon apply here — deforestation along the Rondônia frontier, sedimentation, and gold-mining mercury in the water column. The recurring lesson is that this ecoregion's diversity rides on two things working together: the contrast between its muddy whitewater and its clearwater Shield rivers, and the free annual flood pulse that the hydropower complex was built to control.
