Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras crimmeni was described by Steven Grant in 1997, in the magazine Aquarist and Pondkeeper, in a paper naming two new species of Corydoras. It was originally placed in Corydoras Lacépède, 1803 (subfamily Corydoradinae, family Callichthyidae), with its origin in the Rio Negro basin of Amazonian Brazil.
The oversized genus Corydoras was shown to be unnatural, and in 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a phylogenomic revision (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society) splitting it into several genera, resurrecting Brochis Cope, 1872 for one well-supported lineage. Under that scheme this fish becomes Brochis crimmeni (Grant, 1997), the combination now used by the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase. Because the change is recent and the aquarium world still says 'Corydoras crimmeni', we keep that hobby-familiar heading while recording the current genus as Brochis. The epithet honours Oliver Crimmen, longtime curator of fishes at the Natural History Museum, London.
Morphology
This is a small catfish, recorded to only about 1.5 in in standard length — among the more compact members of the subfamily. Like all callichthyids it is armoured rather than scaled, with two longitudinal rows of overlapping bony plates (scutes) sheathing each flank and meeting along the dorsal ridge, a hard helmet-like head, and three pairs of barbels around the small, downturned mouth used to sift the substrate.
Published morphological detail for the species is limited, and no widely available photograph documents its live colour with certainty; FishBase carries only the generic family illustration for it. In general form it is a typical short-bodied corydoradine. As in the rest of the subfamily, the dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stiff leading spine that can deliver a sharp jab and catch in a net.
Habitat
Corydoras crimmeni is associated with the Rio Negro basin — the largest blackwater river of the Amazon, draining the north-western Brazilian Amazon. True blackwater is the defining feature of this system: stained tea-brown by dissolved tannins from flooded forest, it is warm, very soft and strongly acidic, and notably poor in dissolved minerals.
A fish of such water would be expected to occupy the shallow, slow margins among leaf litter, submerged roots and wood, foraging over soft substrate. Specific recorded tolerances for this species are sparse, but a blackwater origin implies warm temperatures and an acidic, very soft regime rather than the broad pH band tolerated by hardier corys. Like its relatives it is presumably a facultative air-breather, gulping surface air and absorbing oxygen through a vascularised hindgut — valuable in the oxygen-poor backwaters of the flooded forest.
Feeding
No dietary study has been published for C. crimmeni, but its anatomy and habits place it among the benthic omnivore–detritivores of the subfamily. It would work soft substrate and leaf litter with its barbels and protrusible mouth, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, micro-crustaceans and organic detritus, expelling sifted material through the gills. In the aquarium, by analogy with related species, it would accept sinking pellets and tablets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and other small prepared and live foods reaching the bottom, best given as a varied diet.
Mating
There is no published spawning account for C. crimmeni, but corydoradine catfishes are strikingly uniform in their reproduction and it is expected to follow the group pattern. These are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. A receptive female cleans a surface; a male takes the 'T-position' at right angles to her head, and sperm is thought to pass quickly through her gut to fertilise a few eggs held in a basket formed by her pelvic fins. She presses those eggs onto the cleaned site, repeating the sequence a few eggs at a time until the clutch is spread across the chosen surfaces.
Breeding
No breeding report exists for C. crimmeni, and it is rare in aquaria. By analogy with related corydoradines, spawning would likely be triggered by a cool, large water change mimicking the onset of the rains, with groups holding more males than females proving most productive. The adhesive eggs receive no parental care — the adults will eat them, so breeders move the eggs or the parents. Eggs typically hatch within a few days, and the fry, once the yolk sac is absorbed, take micro-foods such as baby brine shrimp and powdered fry feeds. As a soft, acidic blackwater fish it may prove more demanding to spawn than the hardy community corys. All of this is inferred; its own captive reproduction is undocumented.
In the aquarium
C. crimmeni is seldom kept and not commercially bred, but as a small corydoradine its general care follows the group. It is a shoaling fish that should be kept in a group of six or more, over soft sand that lets it sift and forage without eroding its barbels, with shade from wood, rock or plants and an open feeding area; leaf litter suits a blackwater species and helps recreate its natural setting.
Given its origin, soft, acidic, well-filtered and well-oxygenated water at warm temperatures is the appropriate target, with a gentle current and regular changes; it is likely less tolerant of hard, alkaline water than the familiar community corys. It would be a peaceful occupant of a calm community of small, gentle blackwater tankmates. The usual cory cautions apply: the fin spines tangle in nets (a cup is safer), and a stressed corydoradine can release a skin toxin that, in the small volume of a bag, can harm a whole group, so transport with care.
Conservation
Corydoras crimmeni is listed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient (last assessed 2018) — too little is known of its range, population and threats to assign a category. It is associated with the Rio Negro, a large and comparatively well-preserved blackwater system, but blackwater specialists with poorly mapped ranges can be vulnerable to local habitat change and to collection pressure once they enter the trade. Better field survey is needed to clarify where it occurs and how common it is; the Data Deficient listing reflects exactly that uncertainty.
