Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras crypticus was described by David Sands in 1995 in the magazine Freshwater and Marine Aquarium, from the Rio Miuã system of streams — a tributary entering the upper Rio Negro about 6–7 mi above its confluence, in Amazonas, Brazil. The epithet crypticus, from the Greek kryptos ('hidden, concealed'), refers to how cryptic and easily overlooked the fish is among the cluster of similar short-snouted corys of the region; the Catalog of Fishes notes that, paired with a feminine genus, the adjective is properly cryptica.
It was placed in Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, the enormous genus of South American armoured catfishes (family Callichthyidae), and remained 'Corydoras crypticus' through the standard checklists for decades. In 2024 the phylogenomic revision by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, zlae053) broke that oversized genus apart, and under the new classification this species belongs to the resurrected genus Brochis. The Catalog of Fishes records its current status as Brochis cryptica (Sands, 1995). Because the aquarium world still uses the older name, we keep 'Corydoras crypticus' as the heading while flagging the current combination.
Morphology
This is a small, deep-bodied, short-snouted cory of typical Corydoras proportions. Like all members of the genus it is armoured rather than scaled — two overlapping rows of bony plates run down each flank, the head is a hard blunt helmet, and the downturned mouth carries three pairs of sensory barbels. Stiff leading spines arm the dorsal and pectoral fins.
The colour and pattern are the source of the name: a subtle, cryptic arrangement of darker markings on a paler ground that makes the species genuinely hard to separate from its Negro-basin neighbours without close examination. As is the rule across the genus, the clearest external distinction is sexual rather than specific — mature females grow larger, broader and higher-bodied than males, most obvious when the fish are viewed from above.
Habitat
Corydoras crypticus comes from the upper Rio Negro basin, the great blackwater river of north-western Brazil, with its range extending into adjacent Colombia. The type series came from the Rio Miuã, a small tributary near the river's upper confluence. These are classic blackwater habitats: tea-stained, acidic, nutrient-poor and very soft, stained by tannins leached from decaying leaf litter in the surrounding forest.
Within that setting the fish keeps to the quieter shallows — stream margins, pools and slow reaches over soft sand and leaf litter, among submerged wood and root tangles. The water is warm, strongly acidic and exceptionally soft. Like all corys it is a facultative air-breather, surfacing to gulp air it absorbs through a vascularised hindgut, which lets it cope with the low oxygen of warm, still, leaf-choked blackwater.
Feeding
As a benthic omnivore and detritivore, Corydoras crypticus forages continuously over the bottom, using its barbels to taste out small invertebrates, worms, insect larvae and organic detritus from the sand and leaf litter. In the leaf-littered, nutrient-poor blackwaters it inhabits, this patient sifting of the substrate is the typical cory feeding strategy. In the aquarium it accepts a varied diet of sinking prepared foods — tablets, granules and flake reaching the bottom — together with live and frozen items such as bloodworm, Daphnia and Tubifex, which are also useful for conditioning a group before spawning. It should not be left to live on leftovers alone.
Mating
Spawning of Corydoras crypticus has not been specifically documented, but the species is expected to follow the well-studied Corydoras pattern. These are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. A ready female cleans a site and the group becomes active; a male assumes the 'T-position', placing himself at right angles to her head, and she is thought to take his milt, which passes rapidly through her gut to fertilise the few eggs she holds in a basket of clasped pelvic fins. She presses those eggs onto a chosen surface — a leaf, a stone, the glass — and the sequence repeats a few eggs at a time until the clutch is laid.
Breeding
There is no published breeding account for Corydoras crypticus, which remains an uncommon import rather than a hobby-bred staple. By analogy with its many relatives, spawning would be expected to be triggered by a cool, large water change simulating the onset of the rainy season, with a group skewed to more males than females, and is likely to benefit from the soft, acidic blackwater conditions of its home range. The adhesive eggs would be laid in small batches and given no parental care — corys of this lineage routinely eat their own eggs — so a breeder would separate eggs from parents. Hatching in comparable corys takes about three to five days, after which the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods. This is informed expectation, not a record specific to this species.
In the aquarium
Corydoras crypticus is a peaceful, shoaling fish that needs the company of its own kind — keep six or more, never one or two. As with all corys, substrate is the single most important detail: provide soft sand, or at most smooth rounded fine gravel, never sharp or chipped material, which wears down and infects the barbels and produces the blunted faces that mark poor care. Arrange driftwood, leaf litter and planting around an open feeding area, and dim the light with shade or floating plants.
Given its blackwater origins, this species is best kept warm, soft and acidic, with well-filtered, well-oxygenated water and regular partial changes; tannin-stained 'blackwater' conditions from leaf litter or botanicals suit it well. It is utterly peaceful and pairs naturally with small, calm South American community fish — tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and the like — and should never share a tank with anything large enough to bully it. The usual cory cautions apply: the fin spines snag in nets, so a cup is safer, and a badly stressed cory can release a skin toxin lethal in the confined volume of a transport bag, so move them carefully.
Conservation
Corydoras crypticus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation status. As a cryptic, narrowly known species described from a single small tributary of the upper Rio Negro, its true range and population are poorly understood — though the genuinely blackwater wilderness of the upper Negro remains among the less disturbed parts of Amazonia. The broad regional pressures of deforestation, mining and changing land use apply, but no species-specific threat has been documented. The most interesting footnote is taxonomic rather than environmental: as one of several look-alike Negro-basin corys, a clearer understanding of where 'crypticus' begins and ends is the first thing any future assessment would need.
