Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras loretoensis was described in 1986 by the Dutch ichthyologists Han Nijssen and Isaäc Isbrücker, the pair responsible for naming a large share of the modern Corydoras catalogue. The type material came from the right bank of the Río Nanay, in Maynas Province, Loreto Department, Peru — and it is the Loreto region that supplies the specific epithet. For nearly forty years it has been catalogued straightforwardly as Corydoras loretoensis, and that is the name under which it is traded and discussed.
The genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803 (family Callichthyidae) had grown to well over 170 species and was shown by molecular work not to be a single natural lineage. In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a wide revision of the Corydoradinae that broke the old genus into several — among them Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus, Osteogaster and a restricted Corydoras — and under that scheme this species becomes Hoplisoma loretoense. The combination is recent and not yet universal; the aquarium trade still says 'Corydoras loretoensis,' so we keep that as the heading while recording the change. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats the name as a valid species, and FishBase now lists it under Hoplisoma.
Morphology
This is a small, comparatively elongate cory, reaching roughly 1.5 in in standard length — a slim, mid-sized member of the genus rather than a pygmy. The body is the usual armoured Corydoras build: two rows of overlapping bony plates down each flank, a hard helmeted head, a downturned mouth fringed by three pairs of barbels, and the characteristic stiff, mildly venomous leading spines in the dorsal and pectoral fins.
The ground colour is a pale silvery to greyish tan, finely peppered with small dark spots and reticulations over the back and upper flank. Its most reliable field mark is a narrow dark stripe that runs horizontally along the midline of the body from behind the gill cover to the tail base, placing it among the 'striped' or elegans-type corys rather than the plain bronze group. The fins are largely hyaline, sometimes faintly speckled. Sexually mature females are, as usual in the genus, larger-bodied and rounder in the belly than the slimmer males.
Habitat
Corydoras loretoensis is native to the upper Amazon basin of north-eastern Peru, centred on the Río Nanay and associated drainages around Iquitos in Loreto. These are characteristically clear to slightly tea-stained lowland waters running over clean white sand — the Nanay is a classic clearwater/blackwater system — fringed by leaf litter, submerged roots and marginal vegetation.
The water is warm, soft and acidic to neutral: temperatures typically in the range of about 72–79 °F and a pH band roughly from 6.0 to 7.5, with low mineral content. It is a benthic fish of the shallow margins and sand flats, where it forms loose shoals that forage over the open substrate. As in all Corydoras it is a facultative air-breather, periodically dashing to the surface to gulp air taken up across a vascularised hindgut, which buffers it against the low-oxygen conditions of warm, still backwaters.
Feeding
Like its relatives, the Loreto cory is a benthic omnivore and detritivore. It feeds by driving its snout and barbels into soft sand and sifting out small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms, fallen seeds and the organic film of detritus, venting cleaned sand through the gill openings. It is an opportunistic forager rather than a specialist. In the aquarium it readily takes sinking pellets and tablets, frozen and live bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, and grazes whatever settles to the bottom — though it should be fed a proper share rather than left to scavenge leftovers.
Mating
No detailed account of reproduction in the wild has been published for this species, but Corydoras share a remarkably uniform courtship and there is no reason to think it differs. They are egg-scattering shoalers without a pair bond. A ripe female cleans a spawning surface, and the group becomes excited; a male takes up the classic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, and the female appears to take milt into her mouth and pass it rapidly through her gut to fertilise the small clutch of eggs she clasps in a basket formed by her pelvic fins. She presses those eggs onto the cleaned surface, and the sequence repeats a few eggs at a time.
Breeding
Corydoras loretoensis is not a commonly bred aquarium fish, and no widely documented spawning protocol exists specifically for it; what follows is the general Corydoras pattern that applies to its close relatives. Spawning is typically prompted by a large, cooler water change simulating the onset of the rains, in a mature group skewed towards more males than females. The adhesive eggs are laid in small batches onto plants, wood, rock or glass and receive no parental care — the adults will eat them, so a breeder removes either the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in roughly three to five days, and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods once the yolk sac is absorbed. Most fish in trade are wild-caught Peruvian imports rather than tank-bred.
In the aquarium
An attractive, peaceful and undemanding cory for the soft-water community aquarium, though it appears in shops less often than the bronze or panda corys. Above all it is a shoaling species: keep six or more, never singly or in pairs, and it will spend its day in confident, busy foraging. A footprint of around 23.5 in / 20 US gal or more suits a group, with bottom area mattering more than depth.
Provide a soft sand substrate or very fine, smooth, rounded gravel — corys feed by sifting, and sharp or coarse gravel abrades and infects their barbels, leaving the blunted faces that mark poor husbandry. Keep the sand clean. Favour warm, soft, slightly acidic water (about 72–79 °F), well filtered and well oxygenated with a gentle current and regular water changes; it appreciates the clear, soft conditions of its home waters but is reasonably adaptable. It mixes well with small tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and other calm community species. Two standing cautions apply to all corys: the fin spines snag in nets, so a cup or container is safer when moving them, and a badly stressed individual can release a skin toxin that, in the small volume of a bag or bucket, can kill an entire group during transport.
Conservation
Corydoras loretoensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation status. It is a localised upper-Amazon species known chiefly from the Río Nanay system around Iquitos, and a narrow range always warrants some caution: the lowland clearwater habitats it depends on are exposed to deforestation, agricultural and urban run-off, and the general pressures on Amazonian freshwaters near a large and growing city. Collection for the aquarium trade is modest and intermittent. As with several of the smaller, range-restricted corys, a proper assessment would be needed before anything firm could be said about population trends; for now its status is simply unknown.
