Taxonomy & naming
The panda cory was described in 1971 by Han Nijssen and Isaäc Isbrücker, in the journal Beaufortia, as Corydoras panda. The type material came from Aquas Amarillas, a tributary of the Río Pachitea in the Río Ucayali system of Huánuco, Peru, which remains the type locality. It belongs to the family Callichthyidae (the callichthyid armoured catfishes), subfamily Corydoradinae, and for half a century it was known simply as Corydoras panda — the name still used universally in the trade and the one we keep at the head of this page.
The genus Corydoras, with well over 170 species, was shown not to be a single natural lineage, and in 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a large molecular revision (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society) that split it among several genera, including Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus and Osteogaster. Under that scheme the panda cory becomes Hoplisoma panda, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now lists Hoplisoma panda (Nijssen & Isbrücker 1971) as its current valid combination, with FishBase following. The change is recent and not yet universal, and aquarists overwhelmingly still say 'Corydoras panda,' so we note the new genus while keeping the familiar heading. The species epithet is simply the common name of the giant panda, applied for the fish's bold black-and-white markings.
Morphology
This is one of the smaller, dwarf-ish corys, reaching only about 1.5 in standard length — usually a little under 2 in in total length, noticeably more compact than the bronze or peppered corys. The body is the typical stocky, deep-bellied cory shape, armoured with two rows of overlapping bony plates instead of scales, the head a hard blunt helmet, and the downturned mouth fringed with three pairs of sensory barbels. As in all corys, stiff, sharp spines arm the leading edge of the pectoral and dorsal fins.
The colour pattern is what makes it unmistakable. The body is a plain pinkish-cream to pale grey, marked by three bold dark zones: a black band across the head running through and around the eye — the 'panda' eye-patch — a black blotch on the dorsal fin, and a dark patch wrapped around the caudal peduncle at the base of the tail. The contrast of those black markings against the pale ground is the whole appeal, and the resemblance to the bicoloured giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is the origin of the name. Sexing is easiest from above: mature females are larger and distinctly broader and rounder in the belly than males.
Habitat
Corydoras panda is restricted to the upper Amazon basin, in the headwater systems of eastern Peru — the Río Ucayali drainage, including the Río Pachitea and Río Aguaytía and their tributaries — with the Catalog of Fishes extending its range to neighbouring Ecuador. It lives in both clear-water and blackwater streams and tributaries, generally flowing over sandy substrates among submerged wood and leaf litter, in waters that are soft and acidic to neutral.
A defining feature of its home is temperature. Many of these Andean-foothill streams are fed, at certain times of year, by cool meltwater run-off from the snow-capped mountains, and the flow rises and the water temperature can fall to around 66 °F. The species is therefore adapted to cooler, well-oxygenated water than most tropical corys, which has direct husbandry consequences. Reported water chemistry is soft and forgiving in captivity — roughly pH 6.0–7.4 and low to moderate hardness — but the natural waters trend acidic and dark-stained. Like its relatives it is a facultative air-breather, surfacing to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a modified, vascularised intestine when oxygen runs low.
Feeding
The panda cory is a benthic omnivore and an easy, undemanding feeder. In nature it works sandy bottoms with its barbels for small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and organic detritus. In the aquarium a good-quality sinking pellet or tablet makes a sound staple, supplemented generously with small live and frozen foods — daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia) and bloodworm are all relished. Because it is small and feeds strictly at the bottom, it must not be expected to live off scraps that escape the fish above; sinking foods, offered in enough quantity to reach the substrate, are essential to keep a group well-fed.
Mating
Corydoras panda are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond and the standard cory courtship. When a female is ripe the group becomes excited and active, and males begin to pursue her; a receptive female lets a male caress her with his barbels before the pair adopt the classic 'T-position', the male grasping her barbels between his pectoral fin and body. He releases sperm — thought to be drawn forward across the female's gills toward her pelvic fins — while she cups a single egg (occasionally up to four) in a basket formed by those fins. Once the egg is fertilised she swims off to fix it to a chosen surface, frequently the aquarium glass and often where the current is brisk, and the cycle repeats. In a spawning group several males will jostle to be next to fertilise the female.
Breeding
The panda cory can be bred much like other corys, though it rewards attention to its preference for cooler, well-oxygenated water. Set up a breeding tank with sand or fine gravel (or bare bottom) and gentle, fry-safe sponge filtration; soft, peat-filtered or RO water around pH 6.5 and a temperature near 75 °F suits it. Stock more males than females — two males per female is the usual advice — and condition the group hard on live, frozen and dried foods. When the females are plump with eggs, perform a large (50–70%) water change with cooler water and boost oxygenation and flow, repeating daily until the fish spawn. Wet-season timing helps; in the northern hemisphere that can mean winter attempts succeed where summer ones fail.
The adhesive eggs are robust and can be rolled gently off the glass to a hatching container if you prefer to separate them from the egg-eating adults; a few drops of methylene blue, or an alder cone, helps hold fungus at bay, and any eggs that do fungus should be removed. Eggs hatch in three to five days, and once the fry absorb their yolk sacs they take microworm and brine shrimp nauplii. Fry are reported to do better over a thin layer of sand than on bare glass. Today the species is mass-produced on farms in Eastern Europe and the Far East, and almost every panda cory in the trade is captive-bred.
In the aquarium
The panda cory is one of the best small corys for a peaceful community, but it is a little more demanding than the bulletproof bronze and peppered species, and that distinction matters. It is a shoaling fish that is genuinely more confident and active in numbers — keep a group of at least six. A tank of around 17.5 in / 40+ litres suits a small group, with floor area the priority. Provide soft sand or smooth fine gravel kept scrupulously clean, since dirty or sharp substrate erodes and infects cory barbels; avoid undergravel filters.
The two real cautions are temperature and water quality. Coming from cool Andean-foothill streams, the panda does best on the cooler side — wild fish prefer lower temperatures, and tank-bred stock is comfortable around 72–77 °F but does not thrive kept warm long-term, which shortens its life. It is also more sensitive to deteriorating water than the hardiest corys, so a good maintenance regime and regular water changes are not optional. Given those, it is an outstanding, gentle community resident, ideal with small tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids and other peaceful catfish, and never to be housed with anything large or boisterous. As with all corys, mind the sharp pectoral spines when netting (a cup is safer).
Conservation
Corydoras panda is assessed by the IUCN as Near Threatened (assessment dated 2014) — a notably more cautious status than the Least Concern that covers most aquarium corys, and a reflection of its small, restricted natural range in the upper Ucayali headwaters of Peru rather than of pressure from the hobby. The species is now bred commercially in vast numbers, so the fish on sale place essentially no demand on wild populations; historically, though, the panda was heavily wild-collected after its discovery, and localized export pressure together with habitat change in a narrow range is the kind of combination that warrants a watchful listing. The broader threats to its home waters — deforestation, agriculture and pollution in the Andean foothill streams — apply as they do across Amazonian Peru. Future assessments will sit under the new combination, Hoplisoma panda.
