Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras solox was described in 1983 by Han Nijssen and Isaäc Isbrücker — the two Amsterdam ichthyologists responsible for a large part of the modern Corydoras catalogue — in their paper on seven new armoured catfishes of the genus, published in the Revue française d'Aquariologie et Herpétologie. The type material comes from the Oyapock (Oyapok) River basin of French Guiana. It was placed in Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, the great genus of South American armoured catfishes (family Callichthyidae).
The 2024 revision of the Corydoradinae by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues split that overgrown genus into several lineages — reviving Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus and Osteogaster among others — but a core of species remains in Corydoras in the strict sense, and C. solox is one of them: it keeps the name Corydoras solox under the new classification. The specific epithet solox is a Latin word meaning 'rough' or 'with coarse, spiky hair,' an allusion to the male's stout, finely serrated pectoral spine.
Morphology
This is a medium-small cory, reaching about 2.5 in in standard length. It has the standard corydoradine architecture — a deep, compact body sheathed in two rows of overlapping bony scutes, a hard helmet-like head, three pairs of barbels around the downturned mouth, and stiff leading spines in the dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins.
The most diagnostic feature is sexual and lies in the pectoral spine: in males it is conspicuously thick and bears fine needle-like serrae along its length, a development pronounced enough to have given the fish both its scientific name and the trade name 'club cory.' The body colour is the muted pattern typical of small Guiana-Shield corys, with darker markings over a paler ground; the original description and later Guiana revisions remain the authority for exact counts and pattern, since the species is seldom seen and easily confused with sympatric relatives such as C. amapaensis.
Habitat
Corydoras solox is a Guiana-Shield fish, recorded from the Oyapock River basin and smaller coastal drainages of French Guiana. FishBase notes that it occurs in creeks with sandy to sandy-muddy substrate, in spots receiving medium or little sunlight, and that it is rarely caught — a genuinely uncommon species rather than merely an under-studied one. It is sympatric with Corydoras amapaensis.
These are warm, soft, flowing fresh waters of the shield. The species is a facultative air-breather, able to gulp surface air and absorb oxygen through a modified vascularised hindgut, the standard corydoradine adaptation to oxygen-poor pools. Reported environmental figures are modest — roughly 72–79 °F, a pH band of about 6.0 to 8.0, and shallow water on the order of 0–7 ft.
Feeding
Corydoras solox is a benthic omnivore and detritivore like its relatives. It works sandy and sandy-muddy creek bottoms, sifting the substrate for small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and organic detritus and venting cleaned sand through the gills. No specialised diet has been reported; in captivity it would take the usual sinking prepared foods, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp taken from the bottom, though the species is rare enough that few aquarists keep it.
Mating
No spawning account specific to C. solox has been published, but it can be expected to follow the universal corydoradine courtship. These are egg-laying shoalers without a pair bond: a ready female cleans a spawning site, a male takes the classic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, she apparently takes milt into her mouth, and sperm passes rapidly through the gut to fertilise the few eggs she carries in a pelvic-fin basket before pressing them onto the cleaned surface. The cycle repeats a few eggs at a time.
Breeding
There is no established captive-breeding record for C. solox; the species is rarely caught and rarely kept, so no fry data specific to it has been published. By analogy with other Guiana-Shield corys, spawning would be expected to follow a cool, soft water change simulating the rains, producing a small clutch of adhesive eggs deposited on plants, wood and glass and given no parental care — adults eat the eggs, so a breeder removes either eggs or parents. Related species' eggs hatch in roughly three to five days, with fry taking microworm and baby brine shrimp once the yolk is absorbed.
In the aquarium
C. solox is essentially a specialist's fish — uncommon in the wild and seldom traded — but its needs are those of any small shield cory. It is a peaceful shoaler that should be kept in a group of six or more over a soft sand substrate, never on sharp or coarse gravel that would erode and infect the barbels. A tank with a generous footprint, clean and well-oxygenated soft, slightly acidic water, gentle current and regular water changes suits it.
It is a fitting companion for small tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and other calm soft-water community fish, and should never share a tank with anything large enough to bully it. The standard corydoradine cautions apply: the fin spines — and in this species the unusually stout, serrated pectoral spine in particular — readily catch in a net, so a cup is safer for moving it, and a badly stressed cory can shed a skin toxin that may kill the whole group in the small volume of a bag, so it must be transported with care.
Conservation
Corydoras solox is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern (assessment published in 2021), despite being a rarely caught species with a fairly restricted Guiana-Shield range. The waters of French Guiana remain comparatively well preserved, which underpins the favourable status. Because the species is genuinely uncommon and narrowly distributed, however, localised disturbance — mining-related sedimentation, deforestation or pollution of the small creeks it favours — could have a disproportionate effect, so the Least Concern listing should not be taken as evidence of a large or robust population.
