Taxonomy & naming
Danio concatenatus was formally described by Sven O. Kullander in 2015 in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (25(4): 357–380), in a paper titled 'Taxonomy of chain Danio, an Indo-Myanmar species assemblage, with descriptions of four new species.' The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Danio concatenatus Kullander, 2015.
The species belongs to what Kullander termed the chain danio group — a cluster of closely related Danio characterised by a flank pattern of dark rings or chain-like markings rather than the horizontal stripes typical of danios such as D. rerio. Other members of the group include D. assamila, D. catenatus, D. dangila and D. sysphigmatus. The genus Danio, as circumscribed by the current Catalog of Fishes, encompasses the true danios of South and Southeast Asia; earlier literature sometimes placed smaller members of the genus in Brachydanio, but modern practice consolidates them in Danio.
No common name is in established use for this species. It may occasionally be referred to informally as the chain danio, a name shared with other members of the group.
Morphology
Danio concatenatus reaches approximately 3 in in standard length (SL) — towards the larger end of the genus and notably bigger than familiar aquarium danios such as D. rerio. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in typical danio fashion, tapering to a forked caudal fin.
The species' most distinctive feature is the flank pattern from which its name derives: a series of dark, ring-like or chain-linked markings strung along the sides, giving the impression of a chain rather than the continuous horizontal stripes seen in species such as the zebra danio. This chain pattern characterises the entire group to which it belongs and sets them apart from other Danio. Detailed colour and fin morphology in live fish are not well documented in the accessible literature, and the original description in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters remains the primary source for morphological detail.
Habitat
The type locality of Danio concatenatus is Comepyo Chaung, a small coastal stream near the town of Gwa in Rakhine State, western Myanmar (approximately 17°40'57"N, 94°38'25"E). It inhabits the western slope of the Rakhine Yoma mountain range, in drainages that flow directly to the Andaman Sea coast rather than to the great inland river systems of Myanmar.
These small coastal streams are typical of the region: clear-to-lightly-turbid, fast-flowing, soft and slightly acidic, draining forested hill slopes. Comparable Myanmar danio habitats are characterised by soft to moderately hard water and temperatures in the range of approximately 64–79 °F, slightly acidic to neutral pH, and a substrate of gravel, sand and leaf litter. The western Rakhine coast receives heavy monsoon rainfall, so water levels and temperatures fluctuate seasonally. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic tropical freshwater.
Feeding
No published dietary studies exist specifically for Danio concatenatus. Like other members of the genus it is almost certainly an omnivorous micropredator, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms — together with algal material and organic detritus from the water column and benthos. The upturned to subterminal mouth typical of danios suits feeding at and near the surface as well as mid-water.
In any aquarium setting, standard danio feeding practice applies: good-quality flake or small pellet food as the staple, supplemented with live or frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp to support condition.
Mating
Danio concatenatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the reproductive strategy universal in danios. No spawning observations specific to this species appear in the literature, but the biology of the chain danio group and the broader genus is consistent: males pursue gravid females through vegetation or over substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, close contact.
There is no nest-building, no pair bond beyond the spawning act, and no parental care of any kind. Adults will eat eggs given the opportunity. Spawning in the wild is likely seasonal, triggered by rising water temperatures and increased water volume with the onset of the monsoon on the Rakhine coast.
Breeding
Danio concatenatus has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions in the accessible literature. As an egg-scattering danio with no parental care, its breeding biology would follow the standard danio template: a separate shallow tank with fine-leaved plants or a mesh bottom to protect scattered eggs from being eaten by the adults, a conditioned pair or small group, and a slight rise in temperature or addition of fresh water to stimulate spawning.
Eggs in danios typically hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae becoming active a few days later and initially requiring infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Because the species is rarely if ever available in the trade, captive experience is essentially absent; anyone maintaining it would be working from first principles derived from related chain danio species.
In the aquarium
Danio concatenatus is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be encountered in the trade. Its relatively large size for a danio — approaching 3 in SL — means that if it were available, it would suit a moderately spacious tank rather than a nano setup. Like all danios it would be expected to be a shoaling, active fish that does best in groups of six or more.
Water conditions reflecting its native habitat — soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral, temperatures in the range of 68–79 °F — would be appropriate. A longer tank with some current, open swimming space and planted areas to break line of sight would suit the active, mid-to-upper-water lifestyle typical of the genus. Given the species' rarity and restricted range, any captive population would have potential conservation value.
Conservation
Danio concatenatus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it was described only in 2015 and remains essentially unknown outside the scientific literature. Its known range is restricted to small coastal streams on the western slope of the Rakhine Yoma in a narrow strip of western Myanmar, making it highly range-restricted by any measure.
The Rakhine coast is subject to ongoing deforestation, agricultural expansion and increasing human disturbance. Myanmar's small coastal drainages support a disproportionate number of narrow-endemic fish species, many of which have received little conservation attention. The combination of a small geographic range, habitat within a region under development pressure and lack of any formal assessment places D. concatenatus in a precarious position by default. It is not known to be in the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not currently a concern, but habitat loss remains a credible long-term threat.
