Danios & rasboras · names

Every name, resolved

A danio or rasbora is known by a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and, often, by an English common name — “zebra danio”, “giant danio”, “harlequin rasbora”, “chili rasbora”. Because the two groups have been reshuffled so often — and because several fish sold as “rasboras” are really danios — the same fish frequently travels under more than one name. This index cross-references both layers — the 233 scientific names and 166 common names — and resolves each one to its species page.

Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Common name — English vernacular and trade names recorded for the species, including misleading ones (the celestial pearl danio’s old “galaxy rasbora”). Each entry is tagged with its group. Many small, recently-described danios and rasboras have no English name at all and appear by their binomial only.
