Danionella translucida is one of the smallest and most anatomically reduced vertebrates on Earth — a scaleless, nearly transparent cyprinid from the mountain streams of Myanmar's Bago Yoma range that reaches a maximum of around 0.5 in in length and matures at barely 0.5 in. Described by Tyson Roberts in 1986 from the Sittang River basin, it lacks the full-scale covering, robust fin-ray counts and pigmented body typical of its cyprinid relatives, retaining instead a ghostly, see-through form with scattered abdominal melanophores and a reduced skeleton that places it among the most paedomorphic fishes known. In the aquarium it is a delicate novelty — one for the specialist prepared to keep a very small fish in very specific, cool, soft water — but its extraordinary biology has also drawn scientific attention to the entire Danionella genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Danionella translucida was described by Tyson Roberts in 1986 in the journal Environmental Biology of Fishes, based on specimens collected from Dayama Chaung, a small stream approximately one mile north of Daik-u in the Sittang River basin, Pegu Division (now Bago Region), Myanmar. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) lists the valid combination as Danionella translucida Roberts, 1986.

The genus Danionella was erected by Roberts in the same paper to accommodate these extraordinary miniaturized cyprinids. Danionella is now understood to include several species from Myanmar and adjacent drainages — all sharing the same suite of paedomorphic characters, including the loss of scales, reduced ossification and near-complete body transparency. The genus sits within the tribe Danionini (family Cyprinidae), closely related to the danios (Danio) and devarios (Devario), but anatomically far more reduced than any of them. No synonyms or subsequent combinations are recorded for this species.

Morphology

Danionella translucida is remarkable primarily for its near-total transparency. Adults lack scales entirely — the skin is thin and unpigmented over most of the body, with only scattered abdominal melanophores providing any visible coloration. The internal organs, skeleton and gut are visible through the body wall as dark or orange blobs depending on the state of digestion and reproductive condition. The maximum recorded total length is approximately 0.5 in, with females maturing at 0.5 in SL according to Roberts's original description.

Fin-ray counts are reduced relative to typical cyprinids: Roberts noted that the species has fewer dorsal, anal and paired fin rays than expected for its family, a feature he regarded as evidence of developmental truncation (neoteny or progenesis) rather than secondary reduction. Ripe females carry very few eggs at a time — Roberts recorded 3–8 per female — and the eggs are small, roughly 0.5 in in diameter, consistent with the tiny body size. The mouth is small and terminal to slightly upturned.

Habitat

The type locality — Dayama Chaung in the Sittang River basin — is a small stream draining the Bago Yoma hill range of northwestern Myanmar. Seriously Fish describes the habitat as relatively wide, turbid streams with sand and mud substrates and floating or emergent aquatic vegetation, not the clear upland torrents sometimes imagined for hill-range cyprinids. The species is associated with soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral water in shaded forest-margin environments.

Water parameters from available sources indicate a temperature range of approximately 64–75 °F and a pH range of 6.0–8.0, with total hardness values of roughly 18–143 ppm — a relatively broad range that likely reflects seasonal and local variation across the Sittang drainage rather than a precise optimum. Flow is gentle; the species is not a rheophile. The cool end of its temperature tolerance is particularly notable and distinguishes it from most lowland tropical aquarium fishes.

Feeding

Danionella translucida is a micropredator in nature, targeting the smallest available invertebrates — zooplankton, tiny crustaceans and microorganisms — that are proportionate to a fish only 0.5 in long. Its small, terminal mouth and limited jaw gape constrain prey size considerably, and it is not capable of taking the foods appropriate to even modestly larger cyprinids.

In the aquarium, suitable foods include newly hatched Artemia nauplii, microworm, Walter worm, vinegar eels, very finely sifted Daphnia, small Tubifex fragments and high-quality powdered or micro-pellet dry foods. The fish is an active feeder that moves through the water column; presenting food in multiple small doses across the day suits its natural microhabitat feeding style better than one large daily feeding.

Mating

Danionella translucida is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the cyprinid mode. No nesting behaviour, pair bond, bubble-nest or parental care of any kind has been reported. As in other danionins, the spawning act involves a driving male pursuing a ripe female through the aquatic environment, the pair releasing eggs and milt simultaneously in brief contact before separating.

The low egg count — Roberts recorded only 3–8 ripe eggs per female at a time — distinguishes this species from the abundant egg producers typical of larger cyprinids, and may reflect adaptation to the very small body size. Females apparently spawn repeatedly in small batches rather than in single large clutches.

Breeding

Breeding Danionella translucida in captivity follows the standard egg-scatterer approach but requires attention to both scale and water quality. A small, well-planted or mossed breeding vessel with gentle filtration is appropriate; a thin layer of Java moss or fine-leaved plants over the bottom provides egg-catching surfaces that also help keep the microscopic eggs out of the adults' reach. A conditioned group of adults should be introduced and the tank kept cool — in the 68–75 °F range.

Eggs, being small and few, are very difficult to spot. Because the adult fish will consume eggs on contact, removing adults after observed spawning activity is advisable. The eggs hatch in a few days and the larvae, themselves nearly invisible, require the finest first foods available: infusoria, paramecia or commercial rotifers before graduating to Artemia nauplii. Raising fry to juvenile size demands patience and very clean, well-oxygenated water.

In the aquarium

Danionella translucida is a specialist fish rather than a community aquarium subject. Its tiny size, requirement for cool and soft water, and need for correspondingly tiny live or frozen foods make it unsuitable for typical community tanks where larger, warmer-water species would outcompete and potentially consume it. It is best kept as a species-only group in a small, densely planted aquarium with slow filtration — a nano tank of 5.5–10 US gal is workable — where its ghostly, flickering movement can be properly appreciated.

A group of six or more is recommended; the species is social and shows more confident, visible behaviour in numbers. Tank decor should emphasise shade: floating plants, driftwood and a dark substrate reduce light and stress, mimicking the turbid, vegetated streams of the Bago Yoma. Temperature should be maintained at 64–75 °F — on the cool side for a tropical fish — and water kept soft and around neutral to slightly acidic. It is a rewarding fish for the hobbyist prepared to meet its specific needs, and one whose extraordinary biology makes close observation genuinely compelling.

Conservation

Danionella translucida is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022), indicating no current evidence of range-wide population decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category. The Bago Yoma hill range and the broader Sittang River drainage remain relatively intact compared with the heavily modified lowland rivers of the Irrawaddy delta, but the forest streams of this region face ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion, logging and increased sediment loads.

The species is occasionally collected for the aquarium trade but is uncommon in commerce and not subject to intensive export harvesting. Its restricted range — centred on a single drainage in a single hill range in Myanmar — means that localised habitat change could affect populations significantly, and any future reassessment should consider the quality of forest cover in the Bago Yoma watershed. At present its status appears stable, and captive breeding in specialist collections reduces collection pressure from the wild.
