Taxonomy & naming
Rasboroides vaterifloris was described by P. E. P. Deraniyagala in 1930, originally placed in the large and unwieldy genus Rasbora. Over subsequent decades the Rasbora aggregate was progressively dismembered as molecular and morphological work revealed it to be polyphyletic; Rasboroides was elevated to generic rank for this species alone, recognising its distinctness from both the core rasboras and the danios. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Rasboroides vaterifloris (Deraniyagala, 1930) as the valid combination, and GBIF records it within order Cypriniformes, family Danionidae, subfamily Rasborinae — placing it in the same broad radiation as danios and rasboras proper.
A 2018 peer-reviewed study published in PMC (NCBI) documents the taxonomic complexity introduced by undocumented translocations: wild populations of R. vaterifloris have been moved between river basins within Sri Lanka for the aquarium trade, blurring natural population boundaries and complicating conservation genetics. The species common names in trade include pearly rasbora, fire rasbora, and vateria flower rasbora — the latter alluding to the Vateria tree of the rainforest understorey near whose roots the fish is often collected.
Morphology
Rasboroides vaterifloris is a slim, laterally compressed cyprinid reaching approximately 1.5 in (roughly 1.5 in TL). The body is translucent with a pearlescent sheen, overlaid with a wash of coppery red or orange along the flanks that intensifies in well-conditioned fish; the lateral line region often carries a thin dark stripe bordered by gold iridescence. Fins are largely clear with a faint reddish blush. The upturned mouth and large eye are characteristic of a small surface- and mid-water feeder.
Sexual dimorphism is apparent in adults: males are noticeably smaller and slimmer, with more vivid colouration, while females are deeper-bodied, paler, and become visibly rounded when gravid. The species is superficially reminiscent of some small Trigonostigma or Boraras species but is readily distinguished by its single-species generic placement and by the details of fin-ray counts and squamation that Deraniyagala used in the original description.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Kalu River basin of southwestern Sri Lanka, within the island's wet zone — one of the most biodiverse and most imperilled rainforest landscapes in Asia. It inhabits shallow, cool, clear, slow-moving forest streams heavily shaded by closed-canopy vegetation. The substrate is silty, strewn with fallen leaf debris and submerged roots; the water is soft and slightly acidic, with conductivity and hardness naturally very low (hardness around 5–8 dH per FishBase records).
Seriously Fish describes the water as soft and low-conductivity (18–143 ppm hardness bracket across its range), typically with pH between 5.5 and 7.0 and temperatures ranging from 73–84 °F depending on elevation and season. FishBase records a pH of 6.0 and temperature range of 77–84 °F. The shallow, quiet, densely vegetated stream margins with dark-tannin-influenced water characteristic of intact lowland wet-zone forest are the microhabitat to which this species is tightly bound.
Feeding
Rasboroides vaterifloris is a micropredator. FishBase records its wild diet as predominantly terrestrial insects — Diptera and Coleoptera blown or fallen onto the water surface — supplemented by organic detritus. This surface-oriented feeding behaviour matches the species' upturned mouth and its preference for the leaf-litter margins of forest streams, where insect fall is high.
In captivity it is described by Seriously Fish as accepting a range of small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, Daphnia and Artemia nauplii — alongside quality dried flakes small enough for its tiny mouth. As with many delicate micro-rasboras, varied feeding with high-quality items is important for maintaining condition and colour.
Mating
Rasboroides vaterifloris is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. In the wild spawning likely follows the onset of seasonal rainfall that refreshes forest streams, lowering temperature slightly and diluting the water. A receptive male pursues a gravid female through submerged vegetation and leaf litter; the pair press together and release eggs and milt simultaneously among the plants or over the silty substrate.
There is no pair bond, no territory and no nest of any kind. Adults take no interest in the eggs after they are shed, and in captivity will consume their own spawn if the eggs are not protected. FishBase notes the species as a prolific spawner — approximately 20 eggs per batch — which, though modest in absolute terms, allows repeat spawnings under good conditions.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity follows the standard egg-scatterer protocol. Seriously Fish recommends a small, species-only spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, very low hardness), fine-leaved plants or Java moss to receive the eggs, and extremely gentle filtration — a small sponge filter is appropriate for fish this delicate. Adults are conditioned on live and frozen foods before introduction.
Spawning typically occurs in the morning; with roughly 20 eggs per batch, clutches are small. The eggs are adhesive and lodge among vegetation. FishBase records incubation of approximately 36 hours, with larvae becoming free-swimming after 3–5 days — Seriously Fish gives 24–48 hours for hatching. The fry are described as very delicate and require infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Adults should be removed after spawning to protect the eggs. Growth is slow relative to hardier cyprinids.
In the aquarium
This is a specialist's fish rather than a beginner's community species. Seriously Fish recommends a minimum tank of 60 × 12 in, heavily planted with fine-leaved vegetation, dark substrate to reduce stress, and the dimmest possible lighting consistent with plant health. The water must be soft and slightly acidic — it will not thrive in the hard, alkaline water that many community tanks provide. Filtration should be very gentle; the fish come from still or barely flowing forest pools and strong flow stresses them.
Because of its small size and delicate temperament, Rasboroides vaterifloris is best kept in a species-only or very carefully chosen nano-community tank with equally tiny, non-competitive species. It is a shoaling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals; solitary or paired fish are noticeably less active and more prone to stress. Its ethereal colouration rewards the effort of replicating a Sri Lankan forest-stream biotope properly.
Conservation
Rasboroides vaterifloris is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment current as of August 2019. The species is a Sri Lankan endemic restricted to the Kalu basin of the southwestern wet zone — a region that has lost the vast majority of its original lowland rainforest to plantation agriculture (tea, rubber, coconut), small-scale farming and urban expansion. Stream habitats have been degraded by deforestation-driven siltation, agricultural runoff, and water abstraction.
Aquarium trade collection adds a further direct pressure. FishBase notes habitat loss and aquarium harvest as the primary threats. The situation is compounded by the translocation problem documented in peer-reviewed literature: undocumented movements of wild-caught fish between river basins for the trade have mixed genetically distinct populations, potentially eroding local adaptation and confusing any future population-level conservation management. Captive breeding by specialist keepers, while possible, remains uncommon relative to wild collection. Effective conservation of this species depends on protecting the remaining intact lowland wet-zone forest streams of southwestern Sri Lanka.
