Taxonomy & naming
Anguilla celebesensis was described by the German ichthyologist Johann Jakob Kaup in 1856, with the type locality implied by the name: Celebes is the colonial Dutch name for Sulawesi, the large Indonesian island at the heart of Wallacea. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places the species in Anguilla, the sole living genus of the family Anguillidae, within the order Anguilliformes — the true eels. This placement is the first thing to understand about the fish: unlike the spiny eels (Mastacembelidae) or swamp eels (Synbranchidae), which are eel-shaped by convergence, Anguilla is an eel in the full phylogenetic sense.
The epithet celebesensis simply means 'from Celebes (Sulawesi)'. In older literature the species may appear as Anguilla celebensis (alternate spelling) or as a synonym or subspecies of the closely related A. marmorata or A. bicolor; the genus contains a number of cryptic, morphologically similar species across the tropical Indo-Pacific that are best separated by molecular methods. Research on tropical freshwater eels of the genus Anguilla has confirmed A. celebesensis as a valid, distinct species within the Indo-Pacific radiation, though its precise boundaries relative to co-occurring congeners continue to be refined.
Morphology
Anguilla celebesensis is a large and robustly built eel. FishBase records a maximum total length of 59 in, placing it among the larger members of the genus. The body is long, cylindrical toward the head and laterally compressed toward the tail, with the continuous dorsal, caudal, and anal fin forming a single low fin-fold that runs most of the body length. The 'longfin' character that features in the common name refers to the relatively long pectoral fins that distinguish this species and a cluster of related Indo-Pacific Anguilla from the 'shortfin' group.
The skin is smooth and mucus-covered, with tiny scales embedded in the dermis that are effectively invisible externally — a defining trait of the family. Ground colouration in juveniles and yellow-phase adults is typically olive to brownish above and pale below; fish entering the oceanic migration phase (silver eels) undergo a dramatic physiological and pigmentation shift, with darkened backs and silvered flanks. The large, rounded eye and prominent lateral line are characteristic of a highly migratory predator that navigates long distances in open ocean.
Habitat
During its continental growth phase, A. celebesensis occupies a wide range of freshwater and brackish habitats across the western Pacific island arc: rivers, streams, lakes, lagoons, and estuaries of Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, and Samoa. As with most tropical Anguilla, it is tolerant of a broad range of salinities and temperatures during this growth period, living comfortably across the freshwater-brackish-marine continuum of low-gradient coastal drainages.
FishBase records water temperatures of 82–85 °F (mean 84 °F) for this species, reflecting its tropical distribution across the humid equatorial belt of the western Pacific. It is a benthic animal during the growth phase, sheltering under rocks, in bank burrows, and in submerged root systems and mud during the day and emerging at night to forage. The mature oceanic migration phase takes the fish to open, deep ocean — the specific deep-water spawning grounds for this species have not been confirmed, though the tropical Pacific is presumed.
Feeding
Anguilla celebesensis is a carnivore with a trophic level of 3.7 (FishBase), reflecting a diet centred on invertebrates and small vertebrates. In the freshwater and estuarine growth phase it preys on benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and molluscs — and takes small fish. Feeding is predominantly nocturnal; the eel uses its keen sense of smell rather than vision to locate prey in turbid water and at night.
Like other true eels it can go without food for extended periods, particularly as it approaches the pre-migratory silver-eel phase when it stops feeding altogether in preparation for the oceanic spawning migration. In captive settings fish will typically accept meaty foods including earthworms, shrimp, and cut fish, usually offered in dim light or after dark.
Mating
The reproductive biology of A. celebesensis follows the catadromous, semelparous pattern common to the entire genus Anguilla. Mature adults undergo a profound physiological transformation — the shift from yellow eel to silver eel — marked by enlargement of the eyes, darkening of the dorsal surface, silvering of the flanks, degeneration of the gut (they cease feeding), and gonad development. In this silver state they cease feeding and begin a one-way migration to the open ocean.
The precise spawning grounds for A. celebesensis in the tropical Pacific have not been confirmed by oceanographic survey, but the pattern established for other Anguilla species suggests spawning occurs in warm, deep, tropical ocean water at significant depth. Spawning takes place only once in the animal's lifetime, and the adults die after releasing eggs and sperm. The resulting leptocephalus larvae — flat, leaf-shaped, and transparent — drift on ocean currents, sometimes for months, before metamorphosing into glass eels and ascending coastal rivers.
Breeding
Anguilla celebesensis cannot be bred in captivity. No member of the genus Anguilla has ever completed the full reproductive cycle in an aquarium or hatchery: the species are obligate oceanic spawners that require conditions — depth, pressure, specific temperature and salinity gradients, oceanic current systems — that cannot be replicated in captivity. The entire eel-farming industry, including the large-scale aquaculture of A. japonica in East Asia and A. anguilla in Europe, depends entirely on catching wild glass eels (newly arrived juvenile eels) at river mouths and rearing them to market size. No captive-bred eel exists in commerce.
For A. celebesensis specifically, there is no aquaculture industry of note, and the species is not traded as a farmed food fish on any significant scale. Any specimen encountered in an aquarium was wild-caught. The fish gives no parental care of any kind: eggs and sperm are released at sea, and the adults die. Larvae develop independently, carried by ocean currents.
In the aquarium
Anguilla celebesensis is not a suitable aquarium fish by the standards of the home hobby, and it is not commonly traded as an ornamental species. Its maximum recorded length of 59 in, its strength, and its highly developed escape instinct make it an impractical captive in any home tank. Like all Anguilla it is an extraordinary escape artist — it will force through any gap in the lid of a tank, climb wet surfaces, and travel overland on damp nights. A sealed, weighted lid is an absolute requirement for any container holding a live eel.
As with all true eels, it is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based medications and to poor water quality. It is a powerful nocturnal predator and would consume any fish or invertebrate tankmate it could overpower. If encountered in a public aquarium or zoo context it requires large, secure holding with carefully managed water quality. The catadromous life history also means that the fish cannot complete its life cycle in any captive setting — keeping a large adult eel is therefore a dead end, not a breeding project.
Conservation
Anguilla celebesensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (2018 assessment). The DD rating reflects genuine uncertainty: population size, trend, and the impact of exploitation are insufficiently documented for the species to be placed on the threat scale. The high fishing vulnerability score recorded by FishBase (90/100) is a modelled index reflecting its life-history traits — large size, slow maturity, single semelparous spawning event — rather than a direct measure of observed decline, but it flags the species as inherently susceptible to overexploitation.
Across its western Pacific island range, A. celebesensis faces the pressures that affect tropical Anguilla more broadly: subsistence and commercial fishing of glass eels and adults, habitat modification of coastal river mouths and estuarine habitats, and the general fragmentation of lowland freshwater systems by dams and water abstraction. The cryptic morphology of tropical Pacific Anguilla means that catch data and population surveys often cannot be attributed to individual species without genetic analysis, compounding the data gap. Until more robust population monitoring is in place the conservation status remains genuinely uncertain.
