Every name, resolved

An aquarium “eel” carries a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and, usually, an English common name — “fire eel”, “tire-track eel”, “peacock eel”, “Asian swamp eel”, “European eel”. Most of these fish are not true eels at all — the spiny and swamp eels only look the part — and the African spiny eels in particular have been shuffled through several genera, so the same fish often travels under more than one name.
