Eels · names

Every name, resolved

An aquarium “eel” carries a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and, usually, an English common name — “fire eel”, “tire-track eel”, “peacock eel”, “Asian swamp eel”, “European eel”. Most of these fish are not true eels at all — the spiny and swamp eels only look the part — and the African spiny eels in particular have been shuffled through several genera, so the same fish often travels under more than one name. This index cross-references both layers — the 133 scientific names and 115 common names — and resolves each one to its species page.

Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Common name — English vernacular and trade names recorded for the species, including misleading ones (almost everything here is sold as an “eel”, yet only the Anguilla are true eels). Each entry is tagged with its group. Many little-known African and Asian spiny eels have no English name at all and appear by their binomial only.
