Taxonomy & naming
Sinobdella sinensis was originally described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1870, and its original combination placed it within the broadly circumscribed spiny-eel assemblage that preceded modern generic revisions. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names) recognises it in the genus Sinobdella, which was erected to accommodate its distinct morphological characters among the East Asian mastacembelids. The family Mastacembelidae sits within the order Synbranchiformes, the same order that contains the swamp eels (Synbranchidae); the two families share an elongate, largely scaleless body plan arrived at independently from the true eels of the order Anguilliformes.
For most of its described history Sinobdella was monotypic — sinensis its only member. A 2024 taxonomic paper (Pensoft, Biodiversity Data Journal) described a second species, S. longitubulus, and simultaneously clarified the type locality of S. sinensis, whose original Bleeker description had left the provenance ambiguous. The paper underscores that the genus is genuinely distinct within the Mastacembelidae rather than a synonym waiting to be absorbed back into Mastacembelus. The Catalog of Fishes entry (spid 24192) confirms the current placement.
Morphology
Sinobdella sinensis is a moderately sized spiny eel, recorded to a maximum total length of about 8.5 in (male/unsexed; FishBase) with a common standard length of around 7.5 in, placing it firmly in the smaller end of the family. The body is greatly elongate, compressed toward the tail, and largely scaleless in appearance — the tiny embedded scales are overlaid with a thick mucus coat that is characteristic of the group. The snout terminates in the fleshy, probing rostral tip and paired tubular nostrils shared by all mastacembelids, which the fish uses to investigate the substrate for buried prey.
A series of short, isolated dorsal spines runs ahead of the soft dorsal fin — the "spiny" of spiny eel — and the soft dorsal connects continuously around the tail with the caudal and anal fins, giving the posterior a single unbroken fin fringe typical of the family. Colouration is generally brownish to olive with a lighter belly and variably patterned flanks; the colour and precise pattern have not been described in the literature with the detail accorded to showy species such as the fire eel, reflecting S. sinensis's lower trade profile. There is no documented external sexual dimorphism beyond the riper females becoming fuller-bodied.
Habitat
Sinobdella sinensis ranges widely across eastern and southern China — including the Liao-He drainage in Liaoning and the coastal drainages of Bohai — southward through the river systems of eastern and central China, into Taiwan, and across to the Red River system of northern Vietnam (GBIF). A biotope reference ties it specifically to the Li River (a tributary of the Pearl/Xijiang system in Guangxi), and a genetic study documented a population in the Qiantang River, which drains into Hangzhou Bay south of Shanghai.
FishBase classifies the species as subtropical and benthopelagic, occupying freshwater environments. The Li River and the Qiantang are soft-to-neutral, cool-to-warm lowland and foothill rivers, the water cooling noticeably in winter. Unlike the tropical Asian mastacembelids of Indochina and Sundaland, S. sinensis is adapted to a subtropical thermal regime with genuine seasonal temperature swings, making it cooler-tolerant than most of its trade relatives. It inhabits shallow river margins, backwaters and stream beds with soft sediment and structural cover — boulders, root masses, leaf litter — where it can burrow and shelter by day.
Feeding
Sinobdella sinensis is a benthic carnivore. Aquarium Glaser notes that it feeds on larvae, insects, worms and crustaceans, consistent with the generalised invertivore diet documented across the Mastacembelidae. The probing snout and down-turned mouth are the anatomical tools of an animal that roots through soft substrate and leaf litter to locate buried prey, and FishBase assigns a trophic level of 3.3 — confirming a predatory, invertebrate-focused diet rather than herbivory or planktivory.
In the aquarium this fish should be fed meaty items in the evening when it becomes active: bloodworm, tubifex, chopped earthworm and other small invertebrates are appropriate. Small live or frozen foods presented near the substrate help newly arrived, shy specimens feed without competition from faster tank mates. Small fish can be taken — Aquarium Glaser cautions that small fish are potential prey items — so tank mates should be chosen with that in mind.
Mating
Like all spiny eels, Sinobdella sinensis is not a true eel and has no relationship to the catadromous, semelparous spawning migration of Anguilla. It is a freshwater egg-scatterer that breeds in the rivers and streams of East Asia. Spawning in the wild is thought to be triggered by the seasonal temperature and flow changes of the subtropical climate — the warming and rising waters of spring and early summer, or rain events that flood the river margins — consistent with the pattern seen in other mastacembelids.
Courting pairs in related species typically entwine and circle among aquatic vegetation before scattering adhesive eggs; there is no nest construction, no territorial display and no pair bond beyond the act of spawning. Given the relatively small size of S. sinensis compared to the large trade species, it is plausible that it spawns more readily than giants like the fire eel, but documented accounts of wild spawning behaviour are absent from the accessible literature. Much of what is inferred draws by analogy from the broader family.
Breeding
Sinobdella sinensis is rarely bred in the home aquarium, and the accessible literature contains no published, detailed captive-breeding account. As a spiny eel (Mastacembelidae) it is a substrate egg-scatterer: a spawning pair scatters adhesive eggs among fine plants, roots or leaf litter in fresh water, and neither parent guards or attends the eggs. There is no parental care of any kind.
For keepers interested in attempting a spawning, the subtropical origin of S. sinensis is significant: a seasonal cool period followed by a gradual warm-up with increased water changes mimicking spring conditions may be the most promising trigger, since the fish experiences real winter cool-down across much of its range — unlike the purely tropical mastacembelids where temperature variation alone may be insufficient. Eggs, if scattered, would be expected to hatch in a few days at warm temperatures; larvae are minute and require correspondingly fine first foods. Most fish in the hobby, where present at all, will be wild-caught.
In the aquarium
Sinobdella sinensis is an undemanding aquarium subject by the standards of the spiny eels, chiefly because its small maximum size (around 8.5 in) removes the space constraint that makes the fire eel and tyre-track eel impractical for most hobbyists. A well-filtered, planted aquarium of 20–30 US gal with a soft sand substrate deep enough for the fish to burrow into is a reasonable starting point. Driftwood, smooth stones, PVC pipe and leaf litter all add the cover and structural complexity it seeks, and subdued lighting or the option to retreat into shadows will encourage activity in daylight hours.
Aquarium Glaser recommends unheated or cool-to-room-temperature aquariums for this species — a sensible reflection of its subtropical, seasonally cool homeland. A temperature range of roughly 61–75 °F covers most of its native range and distinguishes it from the warm-water tropical spiny eels. As a scaleless mastacembelid it shares the sensitivity to copper-based medications and poor water quality that characterises the family, and established, well-oxygenated water is essential. It is reported to be peaceful toward its own kind, which is notable — many mastacembelids are intolerant of conspecifics. Small fish are at risk of predation; larger, peaceful tank mates are better choices. A tight, sealed lid is non-negotiable: spiny eels are confirmed escape artists that will exploit the smallest gap.
Conservation
Sinobdella sinensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (August 2010 assessment, as recorded on FishBase). The species has a relatively broad range across the major coastal and inland drainages of eastern China and into Vietnam, and FishBase notes high resilience, consistent with a fish that can tolerate moderate habitat disturbance and maintains population numbers adequate to avoid threatened status.
Despite this assessment, the rivers of eastern China face substantial modification: damming for hydropower and flood control, channelisation, sand extraction, agricultural and industrial pollution, and intensive fishery pressure all affect lowland riverine habitats. A 2021 mitochondrial genome study of S. sinensis from the Qiantang River documented low genetic diversity and a shallow population structure, which may indicate historical bottlenecking or restricted connectivity between river basins — factors that could make local populations more vulnerable to localised pressures than a Least Concern listing alone suggests. The species has no commercial aquaculture industry to buffer wild-capture pressure, unlike some of its larger food-fish relatives in the region.
