Cyphotilapia

Cyphotilapia is a small genus of large, deep-bodied cichlids endemic to Lake Tanganyika, instantly recognizable by the bold dark bars and the fatty nuchal hump that swells on the foreheads of dominant adults. Just two species are currently recognized, the northern Cyphotilapia frontosa and the southern Cyphotilapia gibberosa, replacing one another allopatrically along the lake's two long shores. The genus is unusual among rift-lake cichlids for living deep, often 30-165 ft (33–164 ft) down, where slow-moving 'colonies' ambush sleeping schools of Cyprichromis at dawn — making it a charismatic centerpiece fish that, despite its calm appearance, demands a very large tank.

Taxonomy & the radiation

Cyphotilapia was erected by Charles Tate Regan in 1920 for a single distinctive Tanganyikan cichlid that George Boulenger had described in 1906 as Paratilapia frontosa; Cyphotilapia frontosa is therefore the type species, and the genus name combines Greek kyphos ('hump, curved') with Tilapia, a nod to the diagnostic forehead hump. For most of the 20th century the genus was treated as monotypic, with the lake's many regional color forms — 'Kigoma', 'Zaire blue', 'Kapampa', 'Mpimbwe', 'Samazi' — all lumped under C. frontosa.

That changed when Tetsumi Takahashi and Kazuhiro Nakaya (2003, Copeia 2003: 824-832) examined material from the south of the lake and split off Cyphotilapia gibberosa (Latin gibberosus, 'humped'), separating it from C. frontosa chiefly by having three scale rows between the upper and lower lateral lines at mid-body versus two, plus a deeper body and differences in scale and tooth counts. The two are allopatric: C. frontosa in the northern half, C. gibberosa in the southern half. A follow-up by Takahashi, Ngatunga & Snoeks (2007, Ichthyological Research 54: 55-60) confirmed that the well-known six-banded and seven-banded morphs are both C. frontosa — conspecific, not separate species — settling a long hobby debate.

Within the lake's species flock, Cyphotilapia sits among the mouthbrooding 'H-lineage' tribes. Its exact tribal placement has been unstable: some authors recognize a monotypic tribe Cyphotilapiini, while molecular work (e.g. the tribal phylogeny of Meyer, Matschiner & Salzburger 2015, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol. 83: 56-71; and Muschick and colleagues) has variously placed it near the Tropheini or, in some trees, as sister to the scale-/fin-feeding Perissodini. It is one of many endemic genera that make Tanganyika the most genus-rich of the African Great Lakes.

Defining features

Every Cyphotilapia is built on the same template: a tall, laterally compressed, slab-sided body; five to seven broad vertical dark bars over a pale blue-to-white ground; long filamentous pelvic fins; and, in dominant adults of both sexes (most exaggerated in big males), a pronounced fatty hump — the nuchal 'kufa' or cephalic bump — rising from the forehead. The mouth is large and protrusible but, importantly, lined only with fine, slender teeth; this is a fish that engulfs prey whole rather than crushing or rasping it. Two lateral lines run the flank, a cichlid hallmark, and the fine scale-row count between them is the single most reliable character separating the two species (two rows in C. frontosa, three in C. gibberosa, per Takahashi & Nakaya 2003).

These are among the larger Tanganyikan cichlids. FishBase lists C. frontosa at about 13 in (13 in) TL; aquarium males of both species commonly reach 12-14 in (12–14 in), with C. gibberosa running slightly deeper-bodied. Look-alikes are few — no other Tanganyikan genus combines this size, the banded high-backed profile, and the cranial hump. The hump itself is not unique to the genus (some Central American and Lake Malawi cichlids develop nuchal humps too), but in the context of a deep-bodied, barred, deepwater Tanganyikan fish it is unmistakable. Telling C. frontosa from C. gibberosa by eye is genuinely hard without locality data; band count alone is unreliable, which is exactly why the 2003 and 2007 papers leaned on meristics.

Range & habitat

The genus is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and found nowhere else on Earth — a single ancient rift lake shared by Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Zambia. The two species partition the lake geographically: C. frontosa occupies the northern basin (localities such as Bujumbura, Kigoma, Luhanga, Tembwe), while C. gibberosa holds the south (Kasenga, Moliro, Cape Kaku, Mtondwe Island, Kilewa Bay), as documented in the type material of both Takahashi & Nakaya (2003) and Takahashi et al. (2007). Many famous trade variants are simply geographic populations within this framework.

Habitat is what sets Cyphotilapia apart from the lake's shallow rock-dwellers. It is a deepwater, rock-associated fish: Animal Diversity Web (citing Brichard 1989 and Axelrod 1993) reports large schools at 100-165 ft (98–164 ft), with isolated fish shallower but adults rarely in truly shallow water; popular accounts (e.g. Tropical Fish Hobbyist, 2024) note individuals at 165 ft (164 ft) or deeper. They favor the interface where rocky slopes meet open water and sand. Tanganyika's chemistry there is stable and hard-alkaline — pH roughly 8.6-9.0, high conductivity, carbonate-buffered — and cool by tropical-lake standards at depth. Capturing wild fish requires hours of staged decompression, a vivid sign of how committed to depth this genus is.

Ecology & diet

Cyphotilapia is the lake's deepwater piscivore-cum-generalist. The classic field picture (Brichard; Konings; widely repeated in hobby and aquarist accounts) is of slow-moving colonies lined up along deep rocky slopes that, at dawn and dusk, ambush the torpid, sleeping schools of pelagic Cyprichromis sardine-cichlids — a crepuscular hunting strategy enabled by the fish's calm, energy-efficient cruising and large engulfing mouth. The fine dentition fits prey that is swallowed whole rather than processed.

Real diets are broader than 'eats Cyprichromis,' and they differ along the lake. A stable-isotope and gut study of both species along the east coast (Fishes, 2025, MDPI; δ13C and δ15N with MixSIAR modeling) found clear dietary differentiation among sites, with mussels, jellyfish (the lake's medusa Limnocnida) and fish as the major contributors, and zooplankton, snails and crustaceans contributing moderately — insects barely at all. In other words, the genus is built around a high trophic position but feeds opportunistically on whatever benthic and pelagic prey the local slope offers, and isotopic niche width varies population to population. This places Cyphotilapia among the lake's top resident predators of the deep littoral, distinct from the aufwuchs-grazing Tropheini or the specialized scale-eating Perissodini to which it is sometimes phylogenetically linked. The same study noted Tanganyika is a low-mercury system overall, with only the Burundi population showing modestly elevated levels.

Behaviour & breeding

Socially, Cyphotilapia is a colonial, loosely schooling fish — adults cruise side by side in groups, a behavior that translates directly into the hobby's 'keep them in a colony' rule. Aggression is real but unusual in character: these are slow, deliberate fish that bicker over hierarchy and breeding rights rather than the relentless rock-territory warfare of mbuna; dominant males develop the largest humps and command the group. Both species are maternal mouthbrooders, like the rest of the lake's H-lineage cichlids, rather than the substrate/cave spawners of the Lamprologini.

What is genuinely remarkable is that brooding happens at depth. Per Brichard's observations (via Animal Diversity Web), females do not migrate to shallow, well-oxygenated water to incubate or release young, as most mouthbrooders do; they hold and release fry around 65 ft (66 ft) down. Clutches are small for such a large fish — roughly 22-25 large eggs — and females brood the fry to a substantial size (around 1 in / 1 in) before release, after which juveniles fold into the adult school. The trade-off is classic: few, large, well-developed offspring in a deepwater zone with far fewer predators than the crowded shallows. Maturity comes late and large, at roughly 8-9 in (8–8.5 in). In the aquarium, breeding is triggered less by dramatic water changes than by a stable mature colony, good conditioning, and time.

In the aquarium

Cyphotilapia is a beloved 'wet pet' — calm, intelligent, long-lived (well over a decade), and statuesque — but it is honestly not a beginner genus, mostly because of scale. These fish reach 12-14 in (12–14 in) and do best as a colony of one male to several females. Hobby consensus across forums is blunt: a 75-gallon tank is too small for adults, and a footprint of a 6-ft, 125-150 gallon (about 125–150 US gal) tank is a realistic minimum for a group, with larger strongly preferred (cichlid-forum.com, MonsterFishKeepers.com, regional clubs such as the Ottawa Valley Aquarium Society all converge on this). Keep them too few and the constant low-grade bickering stresses the colony; juveniles are best grown out in a group so aggression diffuses.

Temperament is slow but they are predators — anything that fits in that large mouth (small Cyprichromis, fry, dither tetras) is food, so tankmates should be substantial Tanganyikans like Altolamprologus, larger Neolamprologus, Petrochromis or Synodontis catfish rather than small mouthful-sized fish. Two recurring keeper mistakes stand out. First, mixing the species or disparate geographic variants: C. frontosa and C. gibberosa (and the named locality forms) interbreed readily and the resulting hybrids muddy bloodlines — keep one form. Second, diet-driven digestive disease: although 'Tropheus bloat' is most infamous in the herbivorous Tropheus, Cyphotilapia are likewise prone to gut problems from overfeeding rich, fatty, or mammalian-protein foods; cichlid-forum threads repeatedly trace 'not eating' frontosa to bloat/Float from poor diet or water quality. Feed lean — quality pellet, mysis, krill — keep the hard alkaline water pristine, and resist overfeeding. Neither species is meaningfully harder than the other; the difficulty is the tank, the patience, and the discipline not to mix lines.

Conservation

Both species are narrow endemics of a single lake, which makes the genus inherently more vulnerable than its trade ubiquity suggests, and recent assessments bear that out — on the IUCN Red List, Cyphotilapia frontosa is listed as Near Threatened (reassessed 2025), reflecting localized declines and collection pressure rather than a lake-wide collapse; C. gibberosa, described only in 2003, is similarly without a more severe threatened listing. So the honest summary is: the species themselves look stable, while the lake they depend on is under real strain.

Those lake-level pressures matter because Cyphotilapia is a deepwater fish tied to the oxygenated benthic zone, exactly the zone the lake is losing. Climate warming has strengthened stratification and reduced the deep mixing that fertilizes the water column; O'Reilly et al. (2003, Nature) estimated a roughly 20% decline in primary productivity over the late 20th century, and Cohen et al. (2016, PNAS) documented an approximate 38% loss of oxygenated benthic habitat as the oxic-anoxic boundary shoals — squeezing the deep rocky slope habitat this genus occupies. Sedimentation from deforestation degrades the rocky littoral, and an intensive pelagic fishery for clupeids (Stolothrissa, Limnothrissa) and the predatory Lates feeds four nations, adding ecosystem-wide pressure. There is also targeted collection: Cyphotilapia is a high-value ornamental export, and wild adults are taken for the trade. Cross-border stewardship runs through the Lake Tanganyika Authority under the 2003 Convention. None of this means Cyphotilapia is endangered today — it isn't — but a Near Threatened, deepwater, oxygen-dependent endemic in a warming, de-oxygenating lake is precisely the kind of fish whose status bears watching.
