Ectodus is a small, monotypic genus of sand-dwelling cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika, built around the single described species Ectodus descampsii Boulenger, 1898. A silvery, open-water grazer of shallow sand flats marked by a bold black blotch on the dorsal fin, it belongs to the celebrated Ectodini radiation — the lake's sand- and reef-cichlid lineage that also produced the featherfins. The most genuinely interesting thing about it: despite being a textbook member of a tribe famous for maternal mouthbrooding, Ectodus remains poorly documented in captivity and harbours at least one undescribed northern form, so even the boundaries of this one-species genus are not fully settled.

Taxonomy & the radiation

Ectodus was erected by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, in his "Report on the fishes recently obtained by Mr. J. E. S. Moore in Lake Tanganyika," with Ectodus descampsii as its type and (to this day) only valid species. The genus name fuses Greek ek ("from, out") and odous ("tooth"), a nod to the unusual dentition Boulenger flagged; the species epithet honours Captain Georges Descamps, a Belgian anti-slavery officer stationed on the lake who collected the type and forwarded it to Boulenger (FishBase; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, Fricke et al. 2025).

Ectodus sits in the tribe Ectodini (Poll, 1986) within the Pseudocrenilabrinae — the great sand- and reef-dwelling branch of the Tanganyikan flock that also contains the "featherfins" (Cyathopharynx, Cunningtonia, Aulonocranus, Cardiopharynx, Lestradea) and the speciose sand-sifter genus Xenotilapia. Molecular work has repeatedly recovered Ectodini as monophyletic and placed Ectodus among the featherfin-adjacent lineages: Sturmbauer & Meyer (1993, Mol. Biol. Evol.) found 95% bootstrap support for the tribe, and Koblmüller et al. (2004, Journal of Molecular Evolution (J. Mol. Evol. 58:79-96)), analysing three mtDNA segments across the Ectodini, showed the group repeatedly colonised rocky habitats from a sand-dwelling ancestor and evolved biparental mouthbrooding more than once. The whole Tanganyikan assemblage is now reckoned at roughly 208–241 species, the vast majority endemic (Ronco et al. 2019, Hydrobiologia/PMC7574848). Within that, Ectodus is a relict twig: one named species, but with an undescribed form ("Ectodus sp. north" / "Descampsi North") that several authorities treat as distinct. Sébastien Verne's 2001 thesis on the Ectodini reshuffled the names — he showed the holotype of descampsii matches the southern populations, so the southern fish is the true descampsii and the northern fish is the candidate new species.

Defining features

Ectodus is a modest, laterally compressed cichlid — silvery to pale grey-tan with faint iridescence, a moderately forked tail, and the genus's signature field mark: a single large black blotch (ocellus) set in the dorsal fin. Boulenger named it for its teeth; like other ectodines it carries fine, often tricuspid or spatulate jaw teeth suited to working a sandy substrate rather than rasping rock. Size is small for the lake: FishBase lists a maximum of about 4.1 in (4 in) total length, while hobby and field sources (tanganyika.si) report dominant males reaching roughly 5.5 in (5.5 in), with females smaller — so 4–5 in (4–5 in) is the realistic adult range.

The practical identification problem is internal to the genus. E. descampsii (the southern fish) carries a taller dorsal fin with the black blotch sitting centrally or toward the rear of the fin; the undescribed northern Ectodus sp. is smaller and has the blotch shifted forward (Seriously Fish, after Verne 2001). Against neighbouring genera, Ectodus is most easily confused with the smaller, big-eyed sand-sifters of Xenotilapia and with juvenile featherfins, but it lacks the elongated, filamentous pelvic fins of Cyathopharynx and Cunningtonia, and lacks the steep, blunt head profile of Aulonocranus. Its plain silver body plus the lone dorsal spot is the quickest tell on a sand flat.

Range & habitat

Ectodus is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and, as currently understood, the described E. descampsii is largely a southern-lake fish. The IUCN range statement (Sibomana 2025) and Verne (2001) put it from the Livua/Lukuga-area delta at Moliro (Democratic Republic of the Congo) along the entire Zambian shoreline and up the Tanzanian coast roughly as far north as the mouth of the Ifume River at Karema / Utinta Bay, just north of Cape Mpimbwe. Populations further north in the lake appear to belong to the undescribed Ectodus sp. The estimated extent of occurrence is small for a Tanganyikan endemic — about 10,543 mi² (IUCN 2025).

The biotope is unambiguous: shallow, open sand. tanganyika.si records it over sandy bottoms at depths of roughly 10–82 ft (10–82 ft), and FishBase describes it as gregarious over coarse-sand bottoms; it is most abundant in very shallow sandy habitat. It is a sand-flat fish, not a rock-dweller — rocks, if present, only bound its territories. In-situ water chemistry follows Tanganyika's famously stable, hard, alkaline regime: temperatures around 75–81°F (75–81 °F), pH roughly 8.0–9.0, and high carbonate hardness, conditions reflected in both FishBase's 75–79 °F band and aquarium guidance (Seriously Fish: pH 7.5–9.0, 10–25°dGH).

Ecology & diet

Ectodus is engineered for the sand-sifting niche that defines much of the Ectodini. It is a microbenthos and detritus feeder: Poll (1956), in the Belgian Hydrobiological Exploration results, described it taking up mouthfuls of sand that are chewed and filtered, with the main fare being insect larvae and small crustaceans consumed together with filamentous algae and a great deal of sand grain. FishBase adds diatoms, microorganisms and algae to the list and assigns a low trophic level of about 2.5 — consistent with a fish near the base of the food web rather than a predator. The gut is short (about equal to total length), as expected for an animal eating soft invertebrates and biofilm rather than tough plant matter.

In community terms, Ectodus is one of many sand specialists partitioning the same shallow flats — alongside Xenotilapia, Callochromis and the featherfins — and its role is to convert interstitial invertebrates, microcrustaceans and benthic algae into prey for larger predators. The genus shows little of the dramatic trophic divergence seen in radiations like Petrochromis or the scale-eating Perissodus: there is essentially one feeding mode here. What variation exists is geographic and morphological (the southern descampsii versus the northern undescribed form) rather than a split into distinct trophic guilds, which is itself notable in a tribe celebrated for its ecological versatility.

Behaviour & breeding

Ectodus is gregarious and comparatively peaceful, living in loose aggregations over open sand and feeding by day. It is also famously skittish: when alarmed it can dive into and partly bury itself in the substrate, and hobbyists report individuals swimming through clouds of suspended sand during disturbances (tanganyika.si; cichlid-forum.com). That nervous disposition is a defining behavioural trait of the genus, not an artefact of captivity.

Reproduction follows the ancestral ectodine pattern: a polygamous, lek-forming maternal mouthbrooder. Dominant males establish territories on the sand and excavate shallow, saucer-shaped spawning pits to court females; spawning occurs over these depressions, after which the female takes the eggs into her mouth and broods them alone. Reported clutches are modest — roughly 15–40 eggs — incubated for about three weeks (tanganyika.si). As in other lekking sand cichlids, subdominant "sneaker" males attempt to dart between a spawning pair and fertilise part of the clutch (cichlid-forum.com). This places Ectodus on the maternal-mouthbrooding side of the Ectodini, in contrast to the biparental mouthbrooding that evolved convergently elsewhere in the tribe (Koblmüller et al. 2004). Breeding triggers in the wild are tied to warm, stable shallow-water conditions; in aquaria, successful spawning is documented as difficult and natural behaviour rarely fully expressed (Seriously Fish notes it is largely unrecorded in tanks).

In the aquarium

Honestly assessed, Ectodus is an uncommon, somewhat advanced Tanganyikan that rewards a keeper who builds the tank around its temperament. It stays small — plan for a footprint, not a height: a 36-inch, ~30–40 US gal (20–40 US gal) tank can hold a small group, but a 75 gal (about 75 US gal) or larger with a long open sand run is far better for a breeding colony (Seriously Fish; tanganyika.si). A deep bed of fine sand is non-negotiable — this fish forages and spawns by sifting sand, and coarse gravel denies it both its natural feeding behaviour and its spawning substrate.

The recurring mistakes are predictable. First, keepers underestimate how shy it is and pair it with boisterous tankmates: Mbuna, large Tropheus, or aggressive Lamprologines will leave it cowering and off its food. Calm company — Julidochromis, smaller Neolamprologus, Cyprichromis, and Tanganyikan Synodontis — is the right call, and a species tank is best if you actually want to see natural behaviour. Second, it is gregarious and sulks in ones and twos; keep a group of at least six to eight so the fish feel secure. Third, because the genus contains an undescribed northern form circulating in the trade alongside true descampsii, mixing the two risks muddying lines — keep them separate. Diet is easy (it accepts prepared foods but does best on small frozen and live invertebrates plus some algal content), and Tanganyika's hard, alkaline, stable water is the real husbandry demand. It is not a beginner's fish, but it is not difficult to keep alive either — the difficulty is breeding it and seeing it behave naturally, both of which require space, sand, and patience.

Conservation

Ectodus descampsii was reassessed by the IUCN in 2025 (Sibomana, reviewed by Ad Konings) as Vulnerable under criterion B1ab(iii,v) — a meaningful downgrade from its 2006 listing of Least Concern. The justification is its small range (extent of occurrence under 20,0 mi²; estimated ~10,543 mi²), few threat-based locations (6–10), and a continuing, inferred decline in mature individuals and habitat quality, with the fish described as having almost disappeared from Zambian shores and likely highly threatened in Tanzania. The principal drivers are direct: capture by (often illegal) beach seines, plus sedimentation and agricultural runoff degrading the shallow sandy habitat it depends on. Because it is a small, shallow, southern-sector sand fish, it is unusually exposed to exactly these inshore pressures, and as a single-species genus there is no "safe" congener to buffer the loss — which is why the genus-level picture here is genuinely concerning rather than reassuring.

Those local threats sit atop lake-wide ones. Lake Tanganyika has warmed and become more strongly stratified, reducing deep mixing and depressing primary productivity by roughly 20% over the 20th century (O'Reilly et al. 2003, Nature), with downstream consequences for the fisheries that feed Burundi, the DRC, Tanzania and Zambia. Cohen et al. (2016, PNAS) estimated that reduced mixing has shrunk oxygenated benthic habitat by about 38% in their study areas, squeezing bottom-dwelling life. The pelagic clupeid-and-Lates fishery and inshore sedimentation from deforestation compound the strain on the rocky and sandy littoral, and basin governance runs through the Lake Tanganyika Authority under the 2003 Convention. The accurate summary: most Tanganyikan cichlids remain Least Concern, but Ectodus is one of the genuinely strained ones — a narrow-range sand specialist already declining where targeted fishing and habitat degradation overlap.
