Taxonomy & the radiation
Interochromis was erected by Kosaku Yamaoka, Michio Hori and Tetsuo Kuwamura in 1998 (South African Journal of Science 94:381-386) for a single Tanganyikan species that had bounced between genera for half a century. The type and only species, Interochromis loocki, was originally described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1949 as Limnotilapia loocki, collected during the Belgian Hydrobiological Mission to Lake Tanganyika (1946-1947); the species epithet honours E. Van Loock, a director of the Great Lakes Railways Company who supported that expedition, per the Eponym Dictionary of Fishes cited on FishBase. Poll's original genus Limnotilapia had itself been proposed for synonymy with Simochromis, which left loocki sitting uncomfortably; Yamaoka and colleagues showed it did not belong with the browsers at all but with the grazers, and the genus name signals its in-between ("intero-", intermediate) dentition.
The genus sits in subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae and, more precisely, in the tribe Tropheini — the rock-dwelling, mouthbrooding herbivore radiation that, unusually among Tanganyikan tribes, descends from a riverine haplochromine lineage that re-colonised the lake (Koblmüller et al. 2010; Ronco et al. and the phylogenomic work in Ecology & Evolution 2022, doi 10.1002/ece3.9077). Within the Tropheini, Interochromis falls firmly inside the Petrochromis clade rather than near Tropheus or Simochromis; Koblmüller et al. (2010) even detected traces of ancient gene flow from the Petrochromis/Interochromis ancestor into the carnivore Lobochilotes (Lobochilotes labiatus). It remains monotypic: in the inventory of 208 valid Tanganyikan cichlids (Ronco, Büscher et al., Hydrobiologia 2020, PMC7574848) Interochromis is represented by loocki alone, with no described congeners and no pending splits, making it one of the lake's many tiny, deeply nested single-species genera within a vast species flock.
Defining features
Interochromis is a stocky, deep-bodied little tropheine, reaching about 4.1 in (4 in) total length (FishBase, after the CLOFFA check-list of Maréchal & Poll 1991) — small even by Tropheini standards. The diagnostic characters that justify the genus are all in the head and gut. Yamaoka, Hori & Kuwamura (1998) found that the outer-jaw teeth are bicuspid with the crown bent lingually on a slender stalk and clearly larger than the tricuspid inner teeth — a dentition midway between the spoon-bladed scraping teeth of a true Petrochromis grazer and the broad cropping teeth of a Tropheus or Simochromis browser. Internally its intestine follows the long, complex "Petrochromis-type" coiling pattern of a unicellular-algae feeder, and the neurocranium, maxilla and suspensorium are Petrochromis-shaped.
That anatomy explains why it is so easily confused with its relatives in the field and the hobby. Geometric-morphometric work on the whole tribe (Kerschbaumer, Postl, Koblmüller & Sturmbauer, Zoologica Scripta 2015, PMC4949720) placed I. loocki squarely inside the Petrochromis cloud in shape space, overlapping all six Petrochromis species and standing apart from the Tropheus/Simochromis/Pseudosimochromis browsers. To separate it from a small Petrochromis, look at size and snout: Interochromis stays small and has a less extreme, less ventrally slung mouth than the comb-toothed Petrochromis; from Tropheus and Simochromis it differs in the larger, fewer, bicuspid outer teeth and the Petrochromis-like gut. Wild fish carry blue-grey to yellowish bodies, often with reddish or orange ventral and dorsal-fin tints, which is why the trade sometimes lumps it under loose "featherfin" or "tricolor" labels that have no taxonomic standing.
Range & habitat
Interochromis loocki is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and is distributed essentially lake-wide; FishBase gives a latitudinal span of roughly 3°S to 9°S, meaning it occurs along the Burundian, Congolese (DRC), Tanzanian and Zambian coasts. iNaturalist describes it as widespread but locally uncommon, living on rocky substrates in shallow water around 7-10 ft (7–10 ft) deep. As with most rock-dwelling Tanganyikans, that broad range is fragmented into many geographically isolated populations: photo archives such as tanganyika.si document distinct regional forms — 'Chimba', 'Kala', 'Kasanga', 'Katondo Point', 'Kerenge Island', 'Mboko Island', 'Mvuna Island', 'Ulwile Island', 'Kalambo Lodge' and others — that differ subtly in colour even though they are all one species.
The biotope is the wave-washed rocky and rocky-to-sandy intermediate littoral, where sunlight drives the dense algal turf ("aufwuchs") that coats the stones. The phylogenetic study by Kerschbaumer et al. (2015) sampled I. loocki from the intermediate zone at Kalambo Lodge in the lake's south, a rocky-to-sandy transition — consistent with a grazer that needs hard substrate for its food but tolerates patchier rock than an obligate reef specialist. In-situ Tanganyika water chemistry across this shallow littoral is famously stable and demanding: alkaline pH typically 8.6-9.2, high carbonate hardness, conductivity around 600-650 µS/cm, and warm, oxygen-rich surface water near 77-81°F (77–81 °F). It is a strictly shallow, demersal fish; it is not part of the lake's deep or pelagic fauna.
Ecology & diet
The genus is built around epilithic algal grazing. The original description (Yamaoka, Hori & Kuwamura 1998) classes I. loocki not as a browser but as a grazer feeding mainly on unicellular algae — diatoms and the like scraped from the biofilm — the same niche as Petrochromis rather than the filamentous-algae cropping of Tropheus. FishBase summarises its diet tersely as feeding on debris and assigns it a low trophic level of 2.0, the value expected of a near-pure herbivore. In the comparative-morphometrics dataset it is explicitly binned with all six Petrochromis as an "algae grazer" ecomorph, distinct from the "algae browser" group of Pseudosimochromis curvifrons, Simochromis babaulti, S. diagramma, Tropheus duboisi, T. moorii and T. polli.
In the densely packed Tanganyikan littoral, these herbivore guilds partition the algal mat finely. Classic field work on aufwuchs-eating fishes (Yamaoka and colleagues; see also the overviews of herbivorous Tanganyikan ecomorphs) describes grazers, browsers, scrapers, biters and scoopers carving up the same rock surface, with intense interspecific competition for grazing territory. Interochromis occupies the unicellular-algae-and-detritus end of that spectrum, overlapping Petrochromis while the Tropheus and Simochromis around it strip the filamentous turf. Being monotypic, the genus shows no internal trophic divergence — every population of I. loocki is essentially the same algivore — so the interesting variation here is between Interochromis and its tribe-mates, not within the genus.
Behaviour & breeding
Like the rest of the Tropheini, Interochromis is a maternal mouthbrooder, and its reproductive biology was one of the clues Yamaoka, Hori & Kuwamura (1998) used to align it with Petrochromis rather than the browsers: it incubates relatively large eggs in small clutches, the classic strategy of a rock-dwelling tropheine that invests in a few well-developed fry rather than many small ones. The female takes the eggs into her mouth, broods them through development, and releases free-swimming young after a period of weeks with no paternal care — there is no substrate nest or cave-spawning anywhere in this lineage, which separates it sharply from the lake's lamprologine (Neolamprologus, Julidochromis, Lamprologus) cave-spawners.
Behaviourally it is a territorial, food-driven rock-dweller. Herbivorous Tanganyikan grazers defend feeding territories on the rock face, and Interochromis is no exception — males in particular hold and patrol patches of grazing substrate, and aggression spikes around spawning and over prime algae. Hobbyist accounts of wild-type stock (for example the Lake Tanganyika keeping groups that circulate I. loocki) consistently flag it as disproportionately pugnacious for its small size, behaving much like a miniature Petrochromis or a Tropheus in temperament. Breeding triggers mirror the genus's shallow, sun-warmed habitat: stable warm alkaline water, strong feeding on a vegetable-based diet, and the social tension of a maintained group rather than an isolated pair.
In the aquarium
Interochromis loocki is a specialist's fish, not a beginner's, and honesty matters more than enthusiasm here. Although it tops out near 4 in (4 in), its temperament is anything but small: keepers describe a tremendously aggressive grazer that, like Tropheus and Petrochromis, is best kept either as a single well-fed specimen, a bonded pair, or a larger colony that diffuses aggression across many targets. A pair can be squeezed into a tank around 30 in long, but a colony wants a 4-6 ft (75-125 gal / 75–125 US gal) footprint with abundant rockwork, hard alkaline water (pH ~8.2-9, high hardness), warm temperatures around 77-79°F (77–79 °F), and strong filtration and current to mimic the wave-washed littoral.
The central mistake keepers make is dietary. As an algae grazer with a long herbivore gut and a low trophic level, it must be fed a vegetable-based diet — spirulina/algae flakes and pellets, not a protein-heavy or feeder-rich regime. Overfeeding rich, fatty or animal-protein foods is the classic route to the gut-microbiome crash that hobbyists call "bloat," the same affliction that plagues Tropheus and Petrochromis and that kills more wild-type Tanganyikan herbivores than any other single cause. The second pitfall is social: because it sits inside the Petrochromis clade and shares its look and aggression, it should not be crowded with congeneric grazers it will fight or that confuse buyers, and it is genuinely an advanced fish — leave it to keepers who already run a stable Tropheus or Petrochromis tank. It is also simply uncommon in the trade, so wild-type, locality-labelled stock (e.g. 'Kasanga', 'Ulwile Island') is what most serious keepers seek out.
Conservation
At the species level the picture is reassuring: Interochromis loocki is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment dated 14 March 2025), reflecting its lake-wide distribution from roughly 3°S to 9°S and the absence of any species-specific threat. Because the genus is monotypic, that single Least Concern listing is the entire genus-level status — there is no spread of categories to report, and FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low (10 of 100) and its resilience as high. It is not a food-fishery target and carries no CITES or CMS listing; trade pressure is limited to modest, sporadic ornamental collection of a fish that is uncommon in the hobby to begin with.
The honest caveat is that the lake itself is under strain even where individual species are not. Interochromis lives only in the shallow rocky littoral, and that band is where lake-level pressures bite hardest. Warming and reduced deep mixing have cut primary productivity by roughly 20% over the last century (O'Reilly et al. 2003, Nature), and warming has shrunk oxygenated benthic habitat by about 38% (Cohen et al. 2016, PNAS) — though those losses fall mainly on deeper communities than this 7-10 ft grazer. More directly relevant to a rock-dweller is sedimentation from deforestation and shoreline development, which smothers the algal turf it grazes and can blanket the rocky reefs it depends on. The lake's pelagic clupeid-and-Lates fishery feeds four nations (Burundi, DRC, Tanzania, Zambia) and is governed through the Lake Tanganyika Authority under the 2003 Convention; that fishery does not target Interochromis, but it is a barometer of the basin-wide change pressing on the whole littoral. The fair summary: the species is currently secure, but it is secure inside a lake whose shallow habitat is being quietly degraded.
