Taxonomy & the radiation
Paracyprichromis was erected by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in his 1986 monographic revision of the Tanganyikan cichlids (Classification des Cichlidae du lac Tanganika), the same work that established the tribe Cyprichromini. The type species is Paracyprichromis nigripinnis, originally described by George Boulenger in 1901 as Paratilapia nigripinnis (the species epithet means 'black-finned'). The genus name literally reads 'beside Cyprichromis' — para- plus the sister genus Cyprichromis, itself a coinage blending Cypris (an epithet of Aphrodite, by way of Cyprus and the carp-like kyprinos) with chromis, an old name for a perch-like fish.
Poll split the original Cyprichromis (created by Scheuermann in 1977 for torpedo-shaped fishes earlier parked in Limnochromis) into two genera on the basis of vertebral number and arrangement, peeling off Paracyprichromis for nigripinnis and brieni. The genus has stayed small and stable: only two valid species are recognized, P. nigripinnis and P. brieni (Poll, 1981), and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists no further valid additions. Field workers do recognize undescribed forms — Büscher's provisional P. sp. 'Tembwe' from Tembwe Deux and a Mahale-region form sometimes called P. sp. 'Ammelrooyi' — but these remain informal. Importantly, the modern molecular work resolved Paracyprichromis as monophyletic: the mitochondrial phylogeny of Brandstätter, Salzburger & Sturmbauer (2005) recovered four near-contemporaneous lineages in the tribe, with Paracyprichromis as the substrate-anchored lineage at the least-pelagic end of the gradient, confirming what Poll inferred from anatomy. Takahashi (2004) independently validated the genus, noting a unique configuration of the infraorbital bones diagnostic of Paracyprichromis. The tribe sits within Tanganyika's mouthbrooding 'H-lineage,' one of several ancient lineages whose parallel radiations assembled the lake's flock of roughly 240 cichlid species.
Defining features
Paracyprichromis are built on the elongate, laterally compressed, almost cigar-shaped plan of the Cyprichromini, with a small terminal mouth suited to picking individual plankters from the water. They run a little larger than the typical Cyprichromis: P. brieni reaches about 4.4 in (4.5 in) standard length and P. nigripinnis tops out near 4.3 in (4.5 in) total length, with most field and tank fish around 4 in (4 in). As in most maternal mouthbrooders, males are the colorful sex and develop longer caudal-fin extensions; females are plainer. P. nigripinnis is the showpiece — its 'blue neon' trade name comes from electric-blue iridescent lines running along the body and fins, which the fish flashes best under subdued light against dark rock.
The genus's only real look-alikes are each other and the sister genus Cyprichromis. Paracyprichromis are more slender than Cyprichromis and behave differently, staying tethered to rock rather than drifting far out in the column. Separating the two Paracyprichromis takes a closer eye: per Seriously Fish and the Konings-derived accounts, P. brieni has smaller eyes and a slimmer, more elongate body, while P. nigripinnis is deeper-bodied with proportionally larger eyes. The two frequently occur side by side on the same reef, so body proportions and eye size — not color alone — are the reliable field marks.
Range & habitat
Both species are endemic to Lake Tanganyika, and both are essentially lake-wide: the IUCN range description for P. nigripinnis lists it from all four riparian nations (Burundi, DRC, Tanzania and Zambia), and Brandstätter et al. (2005) note that the two Paracyprichromis occur throughout the lake — a broader distribution than several of their Cyprichromis relatives, which split into northern and southern ranges. Well-known collection localities for the 'blue neon' include Chituta Bay in Zambia and Kigoma and Msambu (Nkove) in Tanzania.
The genus is a deep-rock specialist. These are fishes of the rocky littoral and sublittoral, strongly associated with crevices, overhangs and large caves formed by tumbled boulders. The IUCN assessment puts P. nigripinnis down to about 131 ft and possibly deeper, restricted to large rock-formed caves; the Konings-based tanganyika.si account places it usually below 82 ft, while P. brieni ranges from a few meters down to 98–131 ft. Both partition the same reefs by microhabitat: territorial males tuck under ledges and inside caves while females and non-territorial fish feed in open water a meter or two off the rock. Tanganyika itself is hard, alkaline and thermally stable — surface waters around 75–81°F (75–81 °F); FishBase records a tropical 73–77 °F band for nigripinnis — with high carbonate hardness and a pH of roughly 8.5–9.2 in the layers these fish occupy.
Ecology & diet
Paracyprichromis are zooplanktivores. Like the rest of the Cyprichromini they pick zooplankton (and some phytoplankton) one item at a time from the water column, but they do it close to the rock rather than out in open water — the genus represents the substrate-anchored end of the tribe's celebrated evolutionary gradient toward fully pelagic life (Brandstätter et al., 2005). FishBase gives P. nigripinnis a trophic level of about 3.4, the signature of a small, invertebrate-feeding planktivore. Their small terminal mouths and slim bodies are the hardware for this niche; the IUCN account describes non-territorial nigripinnis feeding on plankton a meter or two from the substrate, while territorial males stay close to the rock.
Within that shared plan the two species diverge mostly in degree of openness rather than in food: brieni tends to feed a little more freely in open water above rocky bottoms, while nigripinnis stays tighter to caves and ledges. As abundant mid-water shoalers in a lake whose cichlid fauna is otherwise dominated by rock-grazing aufwuchs feeders, Paracyprichromis form part of the planktivore guild that links Tanganyika's plankton to its larger predators, including piscivorous cichlids and the introduced-fishery Lates perches.
Behaviour & breeding
Sociality in the genus is real but more muted than in the open-water Cyprichromis, and the sources genuinely disagree on how strongly. FishBase describes P. nigripinnis as gregarious, forming schools of several hundred fish; the IUCN assessment (Haambiya, 2025) explicitly states the opposite — that it is 'not a gregarious species like the other Cyprichromini' and lives in close contact with rocky caves. The likeliest reconciliation, echoed by Seriously Fish, is that Paracyprichromis form much looser shoals than Cyprichromis and key on structure: groups exist, but they are rock-tethered and far less tightly schooling than the glittering open-water sardine cichlids. The genus is peaceful and retiring; males hold territories under overhangs and in caves, and male P. nigripinnis are famously found hanging upside-down beneath ledges, backs toward the light.
Both species are polygamous maternal mouthbrooders, but with the genus's defining twist on the mechanism. Where open-water Cyprichromis fertilize eggs inside the female's mouth in mid-water, Paracyprichromis spawn head-down against a rock surface: the female releases eggs one at a time and the male fertilizes them on the substrate immediately before she takes them up — fertilization occurs outside the mouth (Büscher; summarized by tanganyika.si and Brandstätter et al., 2005). Clutches are small, typically 8–15 eggs and up to about 25, and Kuwamura's (1986) field study found females of 3.5–4 in SL brooding larvae up to 0.5 in before releasing — and then abandoning — the fry after about three weeks. Steady warm, hard, alkaline water; subdued light; vertical rock walls forming caves; and good male color are the practical triggers.
In the aquarium
Paracyprichromis are rewarding but not a true beginner's genus, and honest advice begins with the setup, not the fish. They want a deep, dimly lit tank with vertical rockwork forming caves and overhangs plus open swimming space above; under bright light, bare decor, or boisterous tankmates they sulk and lose their best color almost immediately (Seriously Fish; tanganyika.si). A 4 ft, ~50–80-gallon (about 55–80 US gal) tank suits a group, and they should be kept in numbers — Seriously Fish suggests eight or more, Konings-based accounts ten or more, with several females per male. They are gentle, easily bullied fish: keep them with calm Tanganyikans such as Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, Altolamprologus and sand-sifting Xenotilapia, and away from Tropheus, large Cyphotilapia frontosa, and mbuna, which will both out-compete them at feeding and stress them out of color.
The recurring mistakes are predictable and well documented in the hobby. First, jumping and stress losses: forum keepers on cichlid-forum.com report fish vanishing without a trace within the first weeks, and the consensus is acclimation and water-quality sensitivity rather than aggression — these fish reward rock-stable hard, alkaline water and weekly (not fortnightly) water changes, and newly imported stock is fragile. Second, lighting and patience: juveniles are drab gray and color up slowly, often only after months and only in a dark tank with dark rock, which catches out impatient buyers expecting instant 'blue neon.' Third, congeners and morphs: the two species hybridize, and so do distinct geographic variants, so colonies should be single-species and single-locality. Diet is easy — they take quality flake and small pellets but show best color on frozen or live brine shrimp, cyclops and similar small foods, ideally with carotenoid-rich fare. Of the two, P. nigripinnis is the commonly traded, more forgiving choice (some keepers, like the Cichlid Room Companion contributor Anikstein, even argue beginners can succeed with it given clean water); P. brieni is less showy, less available, and best regarded as a fish for keepers who already understand the genus.
Conservation
Both Paracyprichromis are narrow endemics of a single lake, so the genus's fate is the lake's fate. On the IUCN Red List, P. nigripinnis was reassessed Least Concern on 26 February 2025 (Haambiya, 2025), described as widespread with no known major widespread threats; P. brieni is likewise treated as Least Concern, and FishBase flags the genus as low fishing-vulnerability and high-resilience. That is the honest headline — these are not threatened species on paper. The IUCN does, however, name two real pressures specific to nigripinnis: sedimentation/pollution from agricultural and forestry runoff, and over-collection by the ornamental trade, the latter a localized concern for a fish prized as the 'blue neon.' Reassuringly, the assessment notes the species' cave-dwelling habit probably shields it from the lake's commercial food fishery.
The larger anxieties are lake-wide and bear on every Tanganyikan endemic. Climate warming has reduced the lake's seasonal mixing, and O'Reilly et al. (2003, Nature) linked that increased stratification to an estimated ~20% decline in primary productivity — the very plankton base a zooplanktivore like Paracyprichromis depends on. Cohen et al. (2016, PNAS) documented roughly a 38% loss of oxygenated benthic habitat as the oxygenated layer contracts, and sedimentation from deforestation and shoreline development continues to degrade the rocky littoral these fish inhabit. Layered on top is Tanganyika's enormous pelagic fishery for clupeids and Lates, which feeds four nations, with management coordinated regionally through the Lake Tanganyika Authority. The accurate summary: both species are Least Concern and currently secure, but they are narrowly endemic, structure-dependent planktivores in a warming, stratifying, increasingly sediment-stressed lake — a status to monitor, not to celebrate.
