Taxonomy & naming
Awaous guamensis was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1837, and the species epithet records its original type locality: Guam, the largest island in the Marianas chain. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) places the species in the genus Awaous and the family Oxudercidae — the true gobies, a grouping whose most distinctive character is the fusion of both pelvic fins into a single, cup-shaped sucker disc on the underside of the body. That disc allows gobies to cling to smooth rock faces and even climb waterfalls, and it is the character that immediately separates Awaous from the sleepers and gudgeons (family Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain separate.
Gobies as a whole are overwhelmingly marine: of the roughly 2,000 described species in the Gobiidae/Gobionellidae/Oxudercidae complex, the vast majority spend their entire lives in saltwater. A freshwater or amphidromous goby is the exception, not the rule. Awaous guamensis sits in that exceptional category — it uses fresh water for adult life and reproduction but depends on the ocean for larval development. Historical literature may place the species under older combinations such as Gobius guamensis or within the broader Sicydiinae, but the valid current name is Awaous guamensis (Valenciennes, 1837).
Two vernacular names are in common use: oopu nakea is the Hawaiian and Pacific-island name for the species and is the most widely cited in native-fisheries literature; Pacific river goby and scribbled goby are the English trade names reflecting its range and distinctive olive-and-white patterning.
Morphology
Awaous guamensis is the largest of the Pacific stream gobies, reaching 9.5 in SL in males and around 6.5 in SL in females — large enough to be a food fish on several islands, and considerably bigger than most gobies encountered in the aquarium trade. The body is moderately elongate and somewhat robust, tapering to a rounded tail. Coloration in adults is a dark olive to brownish-green on the back and flanks, overlaid with irregular white streaks, speckles and reticulations that give the fish its "scribbled" vernacular name; the belly is paler, often cream-white.
The fused pelvic disc is prominent and easily seen from below. Two dorsal fins are separated by a small gap, as is typical across the Oxudercidae. Males grow substantially larger than females — the size difference between the sexes is pronounced enough to be a reliable field character — and mature males develop a broader, more robust head. There is no strong colour dimorphism between the sexes beyond size, though breeding males may intensify slightly in hue.
The eyes are set high on the head, giving the fish good upward vision, and the mouth is terminal and moderately large, suited to scraping biofilm and benthic algae from rock surfaces.
Habitat
Awaous guamensis is native to the Indo-Pacific island arc, recorded from the Mariana Islands (including Guam), Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and Fiji, with the possibility of wider occurrence across suitable Pacific island streams. It inhabits lowland to montane freshwater streams and rivers from sea level up to approximately 1,0 ft elevation — a remarkable altitudinal range for a goby.
Adult fish favour the clear, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing sections of streams with rocky or gravelly substrates on which algae grows abundantly. The water is characteristically cool to warm (tracking ambient tropical-island temperatures), clean, and low in dissolved pollutants. The fish is demersal, spending most of its time on or close to the stream bed. Although it is formally classified as a marine/freshwater/brackish species — reflecting the fact that migrating post-larvae pass through estuarine and brackish tidal reaches — adult resident fish occupy fresh water, and the species is most accurately described as a freshwater-resident, marine-larval amphidrome.
Slower, more estuarine reaches near the stream mouth are used during the spawning migration, when adults move downstream to deposit eggs closer to the estuary. Connectivity between freshwater and the sea is critical: streams that are dammed, dried, or otherwise cut off from the coast cannot sustain amphidromous gobies regardless of water quality.
Feeding
Awaous guamensis is primarily an algae grazer. FishBase data indicate that filamentous algae make up roughly 84 % of its diet by gut-content volume, with the remaining 16 % composed of chironomid midge larvae and other small animal food items including invertebrates, detritus, and diatoms scraped from the rock surface. This algae-dominated feeding strategy is shared with many of the Pacific cling-gobies (Sicydiinae) and is associated with the fish's specialised teeth and robust jaw structure, well suited to scraping biofilm.
In the aquarium, Awaous guamensis needs a mature tank with an established growth of filamentous algae or biofilm on hard surfaces to feed from, supplemented with blanched greens (zucchini, spinach), spirulina wafers, and algae-based sinking pellets. Small live and frozen meaty foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, chironomid larvae — are taken and can help condition the fish, but should not form the dietary majority. A fish kept without access to sufficient plant-matter and biofilm will slowly lose condition. This is a fundamentally different feeding strategy from the micro-predator gobies: do not treat it as a meaty-diet specialist.
Mating
Awaous guamensis is amphidromous, and its mating behaviour is adapted to the constraints of that life history. Mature adults in resident freshwater populations move downstream toward the lower reaches and mouths of streams during the breeding season. Males establish and defend territories around suitable spawning sites — rock crevices, undercut boulders, and cave-like recesses on the stream bed — which they court females to enter.
Courtship involves posturing and lateral displays by the male; receptive females, recognisable by a fuller abdomen when ripe, are led into the shelter to deposit eggs. The timing of spawning is believed to be coordinated with river flow and tidal conditions that will carry the newly hatched larvae downstream and out to sea, though the detailed proximate cues are not fully characterised in the published literature. Spawning aggregations can concentrate fish near stream mouths during the breeding period.
Breeding
Inside the spawning crevice or cave, the female deposits adhesive eggs on the rock surface — ceiling, wall, or floor — and the male then guards the clutch attentively, fanning and aerating the eggs until they hatch. This parental-care phase is similar to that of resident cave-spawning gobies, but what happens at hatching is fundamentally different.
The newly hatched larvae of Awaous guamensis are tiny and immediately begin drifting downstream. They pass through the estuary, enter the sea, and spend a marine planktonic phase estimated at two to seven months before metamorphosing into post-larvae. These post-larvae, called amphidromous recruits or "glass gobies" in some literature, seek out stream mouths, enter tidal reaches, and migrate upriver using their pelvic sucker disc to negotiate rocks and even modest waterfalls. Only once they have ascended to suitable freshwater habitat do they settle and begin to grow into juvenile fish.
This obligate marine larval phase makes captive breeding effectively impossible in the home aquarium: there is no means to maintain the months-long marine planktonic stage and subsequent recruitment. No successful captive-breeding records have been reported. All fish in the trade are wild-collected, typically as recruits or young adults from their native island streams.
In the aquarium
Awaous guamensis is a specialist fish suited to experienced keepers with large, well-maintained systems rather than a beginner community fish. Adults can reach 20+ cm, so a tank of at least 55 US gal with a long footprint is the minimum for a single specimen; a pair requires considerably more space. Strong filtration, vigorous water movement, and high dissolved oxygen are essential — this is a fish from fast, clear, aerated mountain streams, not slow tropical lowland water.
The tank must be covered securely: gobies are accomplished jumpers and Awaous is no exception. A rocky aquascape with caves, crevices, and flat boulders provides territorial anchors and reduces male-on-male aggression. Algae and biofilm should be allowed to colonise the rock surfaces; supplemental feeding with algae wafers and blanched vegetables is necessary. The fish tolerates plain fresh water as an adult, despite the brackish classification it inherits from passing through estuaries; adults do not require added salt.
The most important caveat for any prospective keeper is that this species cannot be bred in captivity. All fish in the trade are wild-collected from Pacific island streams — largely from Guam, Fiji, and allied localities — and their collection carries a conservation cost. The species is currently Least Concern, but hobbyists should source specimens with awareness of that context, keep groups only if space genuinely allows, and not expect to establish a captive population.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Awaous guamensis as Least Concern in August 2011, noting its wide Indo-Pacific distribution and the apparent stability of populations in suitable habitats. The species occurs across a broad arc of Pacific islands and has shown resilience where its stream habitats remain intact and connected to the sea.
The primary conservation threat across amphidromous Pacific gobies is the disruption of river connectivity. Dams, diversions, and culverts that block fish passage sever the essential link between freshwater breeding habitat and the marine nursery grounds; a population cut off from the sea cannot recruit and will eventually fail regardless of adult habitat quality. Pollution, sedimentation from deforestation, and agricultural run-off degrade the clear, algae-bearing rocky streams the species depends on. On smaller islands with limited freshwater catchments, even localised disturbance can affect a significant proportion of available habitat.
Because Awaous guamensis cannot be bred in captivity, the aquarium trade is entirely dependent on wild capture. The trade volume is not large compared to mass-produced ornamental species, but it concentrates extraction on island endemics that reproduce only once per cohort of recruits. Keepers should treat wild-sourced specimens with appropriate care and advocate for, or support, the protection of Pacific island stream systems and their fish passage.
