Gobies & Gudgeons · names

Every name, resolved

A goby carries a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and, usually, an English common name — “peacock gudgeon”, “bumblebee goby”, “knight goby”, “neon goby”. The Gobioidei have been split and reshuffled across Gobiidae, Oxudercidae and Eleotridae, and big genera like Rhinogobius and Stiphodon gain species often, so the same fish often travels under more than one name. This index cross-references both layers — the 220 scientific names and 275 common names — and resolves each one to its species page.

Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Common name — English vernacular and trade names recorded for the species, including the sleepers and gudgeons sold as “gobies” though they are a separate family. Each entry is tagged with its group. Many little-known stream gobies have no English name at all and appear by their binomial only.
