Boleophthalmus boddarti, the Boddart's goggle-eyed goby, is an amphibious mudskipper of the family Oxudercidae — a true goby whose pelvic fins are fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that defines the lineage, and one of the few gobies (overwhelmingly a marine group) that ventures into brackish estuaries and intertidal mudflats. Unlike the carnivorous mudskippers of the genus Periophthalmus, this species is primarily a microalgae grazer and deposit-feeder, sweeping diatoms and benthic films from the mud surface at low tide across the Indo-West Pacific, from the Persian Gulf and India east to New Guinea and north to China. It inhabits mangrove creeks and tidal mudflats, where it spends more time exposed on the mud than submerged, breathing through its skin and moist gill chambers. It is a specialist requiring a paludarium — a tank with a terrestrial area, warm brackish water, and high humidity — rather than a conventional aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Boleophthalmus boddarti was described by the German naturalist Peter Simon Pallas in 1770 on the basis of material from the Indo-West Pacific, the authority rendered as (Pallas, 1770) in the current combination. The species has historically appeared under several synonyms and old genus combinations — including Gobius boddarti and Boleophthalmus pectinirostris in part — but the Catalog of Fishes places the valid name as Boleophthalmus boddarti within the family Oxudercidae, subfamily Oxudercinae. WoRMS (World Register of Marine Species) confirms the same placement.

Oxudercidae is the family that contains all the amphibious mudskippers, a group that evolved the ability to move on land, breathe air through cutaneous respiration, and spend extended periods exposed on mudflats. Boleophthalmus is one of the deposit-feeding mudskipper genera, distinguished from the carnivorous genera Periophthalmus and Periophthalmodon by its habit of grazing microalgae rather than hunting prey on the flat. It is a true goby: its pelvic fins are fused into the characteristic sucker disc shared by gobies and their allies, and gobies as a whole are overwhelmingly marine — the freshwater and brackish members, including the mudskippers, represent a secondary invasion of estuarine and intertidal habitats.

Morphology

Boleophthalmus boddarti is a medium-sized mudskipper, reaching a maximum total length of about 8.5 in, with sexual maturity recorded at around 4.5 in TL. The body is elongate and robust, adapted for movement on land, and the skin is moist and pigmented to aid cutaneous gas exchange. The head is large, the eyes are protruding and set on top of the head on mobile stalks — the 'goggle-eyed' of the common name — and can swivel independently to provide a wide field of view on the flat. The pectoral fins are muscular, limb-like, and used for the characteristic crutching locomotion on the mud.

The fused pelvic fins form a cupped disc used both for adhesion on the substrate and for controlled movement on sloped surfaces. The first dorsal fin typically bears a distinctive blue-spotted or ocellated pattern, used in territorial and courtship displays. Coloration is generally olive to brownish-grey above with blue iridescent spots and a paler underside, though display colours intensify during male territorial contests. There is some sexual dimorphism in fin length and body proportions, with males developing longer dorsal-fin rays during the breeding season.

Habitat

Boleophthalmus boddarti occupies intertidal mudflats, estuaries, mangrove creeks, and freshwater tidal zones across a wide Indo-West Pacific range: from the Persian Gulf (Sulaibikhat Bay, Kuwait) and the west coast of India east through Bangladesh, the Indian Sundarbans, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and south to New Guinea. It is recorded in both fully brackish estuaries and in freshwater tidal zones at the upper reaches of mangrove systems, always in habitat where exposed mudflats are accessible at low tide.

This is an intertidal specialist. At low tide the fish emerges onto the mud to feed, defend territories, and interact with conspecifics; at high tide it retreats to its burrow or to the water's edge. The burrow — a J- or Y-shaped tunnel excavated in the soft mud — is a central feature of its biology, used for shelter, refuge from predators, and reproduction. Water temperatures across its range are warm, averaging around 77–84 °F (mean ~83 °F from FishBase records), and salinity varies from nearly fresh in tidal river zones to fully brackish in open estuaries.

Feeding

Boleophthalmus boddarti is unusual among mudskippers in being primarily a microalgae grazer and deposit-feeder rather than a carnivore. Studies from the Pichavaram Mangroves on the southeast coast of India show that diatoms make up approximately 55% of its diet year-round, constituting the dominant food item. The fish grazes the biofilm of microalgae from the mud surface at low tide, using characteristic sweeping head and jaw motions to scrape diatoms and green algae from the substrate. Additional items recorded include benthic crustaceans (copepods and harpacticoids), polychaete worms, fish eggs, and nematodes, making the diet broadly omnivorous in practice but with microalgae as the primary nutritional base.

This grazing ecology sets Boleophthalmus boddarti apart from Periophthalmus and Periophthalmodon, which are active pursuit predators of small crabs, mudskippers, and invertebrates. The deposit-feeding habit shapes both its habitat use — it favours soft, algae-rich mudflats over the more exposed, coarser substrates preferred by carnivorous congeners — and the challenge of feeding it in captivity, where a continuous supply of live microalgae or suitable substitutes is necessary.

Mating

Male Boleophthalmus boddarti are strongly territorial on the mudflat, each individual defending a patch of substrate around its burrow entrance. Territorial contests involve fin-erection displays — the dorsal fin is raised to expose its blue-spotted pattern — and ritualized chases or lateral displays between rival males. These displays are conspicuous at low tide when the fish aggregate at high density on the mudflat.

Courtship involves the male performing display jumps and dorsal-fin spreads at the burrow entrance to attract a ripe female. Once a female approaches, she is led into the burrow by the male for spawning. The burrow is prepared in advance, with the male excavating and maintaining a J- or Y-shaped tunnel whose blind end extends above the waterline into the bank of the mudflat, creating an air pocket above standing water in the chamber.

Breeding

Boleophthalmus boddarti is a burrow-spawner: eggs are deposited inside the air-filled chamber at the end of the mud burrow, attached to the burrow wall above the water surface. The male actively maintains this air pocket, repeatedly surfacing to take mouthfuls of air and releasing them inside the sealed chamber to replenish the oxygen supply for the developing embryos — a remarkable behaviour documented in several oxudercine mudskippers. The male guards the burrow and the egg mass through incubation.

After hatching, the larvae are pelagic, entering the water column and developing in brackish and marine coastal waters. This means the larval phase is not enclosed within the freshwater or brackish system: larvae disperse through tidal flow, and recruitment back to intertidal habitat follows a period of planktonic development. As a consequence, Boleophthalmus boddarti is virtually never bred in home aquaria; the combination of specific burrow conditions, air-chamber maintenance requirements, and pelagic larval ecology makes captive reproduction impractical under aquarium conditions. Specimens in the trade and in public aquaria are wild-collected.

The species has been the subject of reproductive ecology research in the Indian Sundarbans, documenting its breeding seasonality in relation to temperature and tidal cycles, though the full reproductive biology remains partially characterised.

In the aquarium

Boleophthalmus boddarti is a specialist aquarium subject requiring a paludarium — an enclosure providing both a land area and a water section — rather than a conventional aquarium. A practical setup replicates the intertidal mudflat: a deep layer of fine mud or a sand-mud mix slopes from a water section of shallow warm brackish water (specific gravity around 1.005–1.015 is suitable, though the species tolerates a range from near-fresh to full brackish) to an exposed terrestrial area where the fish can haul out, bask under overhead lighting, and excavate burrows. High ambient humidity is essential; the tank should be tightly covered both to retain moisture and to prevent escape, as mudskippers are active and capable of exiting open tanks.

Temperature should be maintained at 79–84 °F throughout the tank. Feeding is the primary challenge: Boleophthalmus boddarti is a microalgae grazer, not a standard carnivore, and requires a live biofilm or diatom culture on the mud surface for sustained health. Some keepers establish an algae-rich mud layer under direct lighting to culture this food source in situ; supplementary foods such as small amounts of blanched green vegetables, spirulina-based foods applied to the mud, and small live invertebrates can help, but a purely carnivore diet does not suit this species. Males are highly territorial and should be kept either singly or in large enclosures with adequate visual barriers, as combat between males results in injury. This is a fish for dedicated paludarium specialists; it is not suitable for community tanks, freshwater setups, or conventional goby display tanks.

Conservation

Boleophthalmus boddarti is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2020 assessment), reflecting its wide distribution across the Indo-West Pacific and its generally high abundance in suitable intertidal habitat. FishBase records indicate high resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months. The species is widespread from the Persian Gulf to New Guinea and north to China, and it is locally common in estuaries and mangrove systems throughout its range.

Nonetheless, its dependence on intertidal mudflats and mangrove habitat makes it sensitive to the pressures that affect these ecosystems across Asia and the Indian Ocean rim: mangrove clearance for aquaculture ponds and coastal development, intertidal reclamation for port and industrial construction, pollution of estuaries from agricultural runoff and sewage, and sedimentation changes due to upstream deforestation. Regional declines in mangrove extent have reduced available habitat in parts of its range, particularly along the heavily developed coastlines of India, China, and Southeast Asia. Fisheries pressure through incidental capture in artisanal inshore fisheries is an additional factor in some areas. The current Least Concern status reflects population-level resilience rather than a lack of threat to its specialist habitat.
