Taxonomy & naming
Bostrychus sinensis was first described by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacepède in 1801, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the governing authority for valid names — recognises it in the genus Bostrychus, family Eleotridae. The epithet sinensis means 'of China', reflecting the type material from Chinese coastal waters, and the common name 'four-eyed sleeper' refers to the pattern on the head that can give the impression of extra eye markings, though the fish has no more than the normal two eyes.
The crucial taxonomic point for any aquarist is that this species is not a true goby. The true gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) are defined in part by pelvic fins that are fused into a characteristic cup-like sucker disc; the eleotrids, including Bostrychus, retain separate pelvic fins. The family Eleotridae is now treated separately from Gobiidae under modern classifications, though both lineages sit within the broader order Gobiiformes. Older literature may place Bostrychus under Gobius or list it under Vaimosa, reflecting the turbulent taxonomic history of gobioid fishes; the Catalog of Fishes placement in Bostrychus is the accepted current combination.
Morphology
The four-eyed sleeper is a robust, cylindrical-bodied sleeper reaching a maximum of 8.5 in standard length. The body is brown to olive-grey above, paling ventrally, and the sides carry faint blotching or barring that provides camouflage against muddy substrates. The head is broad and somewhat flattened, with a large, subterminal mouth well equipped for seizing crustaceans and small fish. Two dorsal fins are present, as in most eleotrids, with the first supporting stout spines.
The pelvic fins are clearly separate — the diagnostic character that separates Bostrychus and the rest of the Eleotridae from the true gobies. Sexes are dimorphic: males grow noticeably larger than females, a pattern consistent with the burrow-spawning, male-guarding strategy seen throughout the genus. The eyes are relatively small, suited to the turbid, intertidal and estuarine conditions the fish inhabits.
Habitat
Bostrychus sinensis occupies muddy intertidal and subtidal zones across a vast Indo-Pacific range spanning India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam), China, Taiwan, Japan, and Australia. It is an estuarine specialist, most common in mangrove edges, tidal mudflats and the lower reaches of rivers where salinity fluctuates widely — the fish is tolerant of salinities from nearly fresh water to fully marine conditions and is thus classified as a euryhaline species.
A defining behavioural trait is its burrowing habit: individuals excavate tunnels in soft mud, using these as refuges and, critically, as breeding chambers. The species occasionally penetrates truly fresh water in lower river reaches but is not a freshwater resident in the way that many other eleotrids are. Water temperatures across its range run warm, around 75–84 °F. It is recorded at OBIS from inshore coastal and estuarine sites across the entire Indo-Pacific range.
Feeding
Bostrychus sinensis is a carnivore and micro-predator of the intertidal zone. FishBase records its diet as crustaceans and small fishes — consistent with its large, robust mouth and ambush-predator body form. It is a sit-and-wait hunter, relying on its cryptic colouration and burrow proximity to lunge at prey rather than pursuing in open water.
In any aquarium context, live or frozen meaty foods are essential: small prawns, shrimp, bloodworm, lance fish and similar meaty frozen items. A fish of this size and feeding mode can be expected to ignore dry flake entirely and to consume any tankmates small enough to swallow. Being honest about its predatory nature is the core keeper-failure point: this is not a community fish.
Mating
Breeding in Bostrychus sinensis follows the substrate-guarding strategy typical of many large eleotrids: a male holds and defends a burrow cavity, courts females in or near the burrow entrance, and a pair spawns within the shelter of the cavity. The breeding season in the South China Sea lineage runs from May to August. Males are larger than females, and sexual dimorphism likely plays a role in mate choice and male-male competition for burrow territories.
Fecundity is substantial — documented at 9,960 to 39,517 eggs per female per season — reflecting the reproductive biology of a species that combines high egg output with direct male parental care rather than pelagic dispersal of larvae. Pair spawning takes place within the burrow; the female deposits her clutch and then leaves the male in charge.
Breeding
Bostrychus sinensis is a cavity or burrow spawner. The female lays adhesive eggs within the burrow and departs; the male then remains to guard and tend the clutch, fanning the eggs and protecting them from disturbance until they hatch. This is genuine parental care — the male commits to the clutch for its entire incubation period. The adhesive eggs are attached to the substrate inside the burrow, where they are sheltered from tidal scour and predation.
While the whole cycle takes place in brackish to estuarine conditions — not strictly amphidromous in the classic sense — the species has not been documented as a regular aquarium breeding subject. Its large size, need for soft mud substrate and burrow excavation, and specific estuarine salinity requirements make controlled captive breeding impractical in a standard home aquarium. The species is, however, actively cultivated in pond aquaculture in China, where its fast growth rate and tolerance of handling and transport make it commercially attractive.
In the aquarium
Bostrychus sinensis is rarely kept as an aquarium fish and is not well suited to standard community setups. It is a large estuarine predator that requires brackish water conditions — a specific gravity in the range typical of mangrove or estuary environments — rather than pure fresh water. A species-only or large-predator setup with a soft substrate that allows at least some burrowing behaviour, caves or PVC tubes as burrow surrogates, and a tight-fitting lid (it is a capable climber and escape artist, as are many eleotrids) would be the minimum approach.
Diet must be live or frozen meaty foods: crustaceans, small fish, bloodworm and similar items. It will not eat dry flake. Any tankmates small enough to fit in its mouth will be eaten; even relatively large fish may be harassed. The fish's genuine appeal is its personality and oddity — the burrow-dwelling behaviour, its tolerance of a wide salinity range, and its status as an important regional food fish — but it demands a specialised setup and is firmly a fish for experienced keepers willing to meet its specific needs.
Conservation
Bostrychus sinensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 23 August 2018), reflecting its very broad Indo-Pacific distribution from India to Australia and Japan, its commonness across estuarine and intertidal habitats, and its documented abundance in parts of its range. The species is particularly well known in coastal China, where it is a subject of commercial aquaculture, and this production helps meet local demand without driving additional pressure on wild populations.
The principal threats to estuarine species like this one are habitat loss — mangrove clearance, coastal reclamation, and the degradation of intertidal mudflats by pollution and development — rather than direct overexploitation, though it is harvested locally for food throughout its range. Its ability to tolerate a wide range of salinities gives it some resilience to estuarine modification compared with more stenohaline species. No population trend data suggests a current decline that would justify a higher threat category.
