Butis butis, the duckbill sleeper — also called the crazy fish or upside-down sleeper — is an Indo-Pacific member of the family Eleotridae, the sleeper gobies. Like all eleotrids it is not a true goby: its pelvic fins stay separate rather than fusing into the cup-shaped sucker disc that defines the real gobies of family Gobiidae, and it is that single morphological character that separates the two lineages at a glance. A slender, cryptic fish growing to around 6 in, it ranges from the east coast of India and the Andaman Islands through South-East Asia to Papua New Guinea, northern Australia and the Solomon Islands, inhabiting the estuarine and tidal reaches of rivers and mangrove margins where fresh and salt water mingle. In the aquarium it is kept as a curiosity: a flat-bodied ambush predator that habitually rests upside-down against wood or the undersides of leaves, mimicking drifting debris, and lunges at prey with a startlingly rapid strike. It demands live or thawed meaty food, a covered tank, and brackish or at minimum hard alkaline water — it is not a community fish, and it cannot be reliably bred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Butis butis was first described by the Scottish surgeon and naturalist Francis Buchanan-Hamilton in 1822, in his monumental survey of the fishes of the Ganges and its tributaries, under the name Gobius butis. It has since passed through several older combinations — including placement under Eleotris and the now-disused Vaimosa — before being settled in the genus Butis by subsequent workers. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, recognises Butis butis (Hamilton, 1822) as the valid combination, and places the genus in the family Eleotridae.

The Eleotridae — sleepers and gudgeons — are a sister lineage to the true gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) and the two are easily confused in common speech; the hobby routinely labels them all as gobies. The anatomical distinction is diagnostic: sleepers retain widely spaced, separate pelvic fins, whereas true gobies have the pelvis fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc. Butis butis carries separate pelvic fins and therefore has no sucker disc, confirming its eleotrid identity. The specific epithet butis is a vernacular name recorded by Hamilton from local Bengali fishermen.

Several other Butis species exist across the Indo-Pacific — including the closely related Butis gymnopomus — and the genus as a whole occupies mangrove, estuarine and lower-river habitats across the region. Butis butis is the most widely distributed of them and the one most commonly encountered in the trade.

Morphology

Butis butis is a moderately elongate, strongly flattened fish, reaching a maximum reported total length of 6 in, though aquarium specimens commonly remain smaller. The body is dorsoventrally compressed, broad across the pectoral region and tapering toward the tail, with a large, upturned mouth that gives the fish its common name "duckbill". The eyes are large and set high on the skull, facing upward as much as to the side — an adaptation to the fish's habit of resting inverted and scanning downward for prey.

Coloration is cryptic and variable: the body is typically pale sandy-brown to greyish, marbled and mottled with darker patches and fine speckling that blends against bark, roots, and leaf litter. A series of faint dark bars or blotches runs along the flank, and the fins are translucent and similarly mottled. Juveniles lack obvious banding and have pale pelvic fins; adults can be difficult to distinguish from floating wood or bark fragments, which is precisely their strategy. Dimorphism is subtle — males may develop a slightly more angular head profile and brighter fin markings during the breeding period, but the species lacks the strong colour contrast seen in many freshwater eleotrids.

Habitat

The duckbill sleeper occupies the lower reaches of rivers, tidal creeks, mangrove channels, estuaries and coastal wetlands across a vast Indo-Pacific range: from Reunion Island and the east coast of India and Bangladesh through Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and northern Australia to the Solomon Islands. FishBase records it from brackish, fresh and marine environments, though it is primarily associated with the brackish estuarine zone where tidal influence mixes salt and fresh water.

In habitat it favours shallow, turbid, slow-moving water with abundant structure — submerged roots, mangrove prop roots, fallen timber, leaf litter and detritus. It is an obligate bottom-associated fish and almost never ventures into open water. The wild temperature range recorded by FishBase spans 72–82 °F, with an optimum around 75–84 °F; pH in estuarine wild habitats is typically circumneutral to mildly alkaline (7.0–8.0+), and hardness is moderate to high (9–19 dH), reflecting the brackish character of much of its range. This is not a soft, blackwater fish.

Feeding

Butis butis is a voracious ambush micro-predator, classified by FishBase at a trophic level of 4.0 — well above the mid-trophic invertebrate feeders. Its prey in the wild consists primarily of small fishes and crustaceans seized with a rapid lunge from a motionless, often inverted position against a surface. It does not graze algae, does not scavenge flake, and is not an opportunistic omnivore.

In the aquarium it typically refuses dry food outright and must be maintained on live or frozen meaty items: frozen bloodworm, mysid shrimp, small thawed prawns, live or frozen brine shrimp and similar fare. Larger individuals will also readily consume small live fish, and it should not be kept with anything small enough to swallow. Some specimens can be weaned onto large frozen chunks of food after extended acclimatisation, but this is the exception; prospective keepers should plan for a permanent live and frozen diet. Feeding by sight, it does best in calm, clear water with dim light that does not disrupt its ambush behaviour.

Mating

Breeding biology in Butis butis has been only partially documented. FishBase flags the species as amphidromous, which would mean adults spawn in rivers or estuaries, the hatching larvae are swept downstream and spend a marine pelagic phase at sea, and post-larvae later migrate back upriver — the same life-history strategy seen in many other Indo-Pacific eleotrids and cling-gobies. If this is confirmed, the home aquarium cannot replicate the marine larval phase, and captive breeding would be effectively impossible.

Accounts from Seriously Fish and related observations of captive fish note that spawning on solid substrate does occur in aquaria: a pair will deposit adhesive eggs on a flat rock surface, and the male then guards the clutch. Whether such aquarium-spawned larvae could survive without a marine phase is unresolved, and no confirmed accounts of successfully raising fry through to juveniles in captivity appear in the literature. The courtship itself consists of flaring and circling displays by the male near a chosen substrate, with spawning taking place while the female is righted; the male's guarding behaviour is consistent with the broader eleotrid pattern.

Breeding

No confirmed record of successfully raising Butis butis fry in the aquarium through to juvenile stage appears in the available literature or hobby records. Spawning can be induced: a conditioned pair will lay adhesive eggs on a flat stone or firm surface, with the male guarding and fanning the clutch. Aquarium Glaser notes that no confirmed captive breeding has been documented for Butis species in the literature, and FishBase's amphidromous designation suggests that the larvae would ordinarily require a marine pelagic phase to complete development — a phase that cannot be replicated in a home tank.

Keepers who observe spawning in their tanks should expect egg guarding to last several days until hatching, but survival of the larvae beyond early stages is unlikely without specialist intervention mimicking estuarine-to-marine conditions. Butis butis is therefore kept and enjoyed as a display and observation fish rather than a breeding project. This stands in contrast to the resident cave-spawning gudgeons (Tateurndina, Mogurnda) that cycle entirely in fresh water and breed freely.

In the aquarium

Butis butis is a specialist species suited to an experienced keeper who wants something genuinely unusual. Its defining trick — resting motionless upside-down or at any angle against wood, rock or leaves and striking at passing prey — makes it a compelling observation subject, and the fish is wholly uninterested in its keeper's conventional aquarium routines.

A tank of at least 20 US gal is appropriate for a single specimen; a species-only tank or one housing large, robust tankmates of comparable size is strongly preferred, because the duckbill sleeper will consume any fish or shrimp small enough to fit in its substantial mouth. The tank must be covered — this species is a capable jumper. Decor should lean heavily toward dimly lit tangles of roots, bogwood and leaf litter; the fish will select a favoured resting spot and defend it from intrusion. Water chemistry should reflect the estuarine origin: neutral to mildly alkaline pH (7.0–8.5), moderate to high hardness, and addition of marine salt at 1–3 g/L is beneficial and often recommended to support long-term health and reduce osmoregulatory stress. Temperature in the range 72–82 °F suits it well. Filtration should be efficient but flow moderate; the fish is not at home in turbulent open water. It should be fed live or frozen meaty items — bloodworm, mysid, small prawns — on a regular schedule, and dry food cannot substitute.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Butis butis as Least Concern in 2016, noting that the species is reasonably abundant across its wide Indo-Pacific range. Its broad distribution — from the Indian Ocean coastline through South-East Asia to Australasia — and tolerance of a range of estuarine and coastal conditions mean that no overall population decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category has been detected.

That said, estuarine and mangrove habitats across South and South-East Asia are among the most pressured ecosystems on the continent: mangrove clearance for aquaculture, coastal development, sedimentation and pollution all affect the intertidal and tidal-creek environments this fish depends upon. Local populations in heavily developed coastal areas are likely to be depleted even where the species as a whole remains Least Concern. Because Butis butis cannot be reliably bred in captivity, all specimens entering the aquarium trade are wild-caught; buyers should bear this in mind and source responsibly from suppliers who operate within legal quotas.
