Gobiomorphus basalis, Cran's bully, is a stout, bottom-hugging gudgeon endemic to the North Island of New Zealand — and, like all the bullies, not a true goby at all. It belongs to the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, a lineage whose pelvic fins remain separate rather than fusing into the cup-shaped sucker disc that defines the true gobies. A cool-temperate specialist restricted to northern North Island streams and rivers, Cran's bully is the only Gobiomorphus species on FishBase currently confirmed as a non-diadromous resident — meaning it does not make any amphidromous sea-run migration, unlike several of its New Zealand congeners. Its modest size, cold-water tolerance, and invertebrate-hunting lifestyle make it a natural curiosity for the specialist keeper, though temperate New Zealand fish are seldom offered in trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Cran's bully was first described by the English naturalist John Edward Gray in 1842 as Eleotris basalis, from material collected at the Waihou River (then known as the River Thames) on the Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand — a type locality confirmed by Thacker et al. (2021), who designated the lectotype held as BMNH 1842.3.7.6. The genus assignment was revised to Gobiomorphus by Robert McDowall in 1975, which is the valid combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

The genus Gobiomorphus sits within the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons — a sister lineage to the true gobies rather than part of them. The defining character is immediately visible: where a true goby (family Gobiidae or relatives) carries its pelvic fins fused into a cupped sucker disc on the belly, the eleotrids keep their pelvic fins separate and free-standing. Gobiomorphus species are accordingly gudgeons, not gobies, though the hobby often conflates the names. Within New Zealand, the genus includes around seven species; G. basalis is distinguished from most congeners by its non-diadromous, fully freshwater life history — several other Gobiomorphus, such as G. cotidianus and G. hubbsi, are facultatively amphidromous and run to the sea as larvae, but G. basalis is confirmed as a resident breeder throughout its range.

The epithet basalis was chosen by Gray to refer to the broad yellow band at the base of the pectoral fins, a useful field character. A common name in New Zealand fisheries literature is Cran's bully, honouring work on New Zealand freshwater fishes, though 'bully' itself is the regional vernacular for the Gobiomorphus species generally.

Morphology

Cran's bully is a stocky, broad-headed gudgeon with the flattened ventral profile and large pectoral fins typical of a benthic ambush predator. FishBase records a maximum total length of 3.5 in, with most individuals in natural populations measuring 2–3 in; the body is robust and somewhat cylindrical, tapering toward the tail. The two dorsal fins are well-separated, the first of short spines and the second a longer, soft-rayed fin, a pattern shared across Eleotridae.

Colouration is cryptic and variable against substrate — grey-brown to olive dorsally, paler on the flanks and belly, with variable dark mottling and spots that help the fish blend into gravelly or stony stream beds. The character named in the specific epithet, basalis, is the broad yellow to golden basal band on the pectoral fin, which is useful in distinguishing it from syntopic congeners. The pelvic fins are separate (not fused into a disc), which is the definitive gudgeon character. Sexual dimorphism is modest; males tend to be slightly deeper-bodied and may show more intense colour during the breeding season, but field sexing requires close examination.

Habitat

Gobiomorphus basalis is endemic to New Zealand's North Island. Its native range centres on the northern North Island: from the Waihou River and Coromandel Peninsula west to the Waitetuna River, and northward through suitable lowland and foothill catchments. The species is strictly freshwater and non-migratory — a resident of cool-temperate streams, creeks, and river margins rather than estuaries or coastal waters.

Typical habitat is stony or gravelly substrates in well-oxygenated streams and rivers with moderate flow, where the fish shelters under rocks and in crevices. It tolerates a wide temperature range (39–72 °F) that reflects the pronounced seasonality of North Island streams, which can be near freezing in highland winters and warm in summer shallows. This temperature range is well below what most tropical fish-room systems provide, and it is a critical keeper consideration: Cran's bully is a cool-water fish, not a tropical one. It is not associated with brackish or estuarine conditions.

Feeding

Like other Gobiomorphus species, Cran's bully is a benthic micro-predator that picks aquatic macroinvertebrates off the stream bed and from crevices. Its diet in the wild consists primarily of benthic insect larvae — ephemeropterans (mayfly larvae) and trichopterans (caddisfly larvae) are the dominant prey items in closely related congeners such as G. coxii, and the same prey guilds are expected for G. basalis given its habitat overlap — along with small crustaceans, worms, and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates.

In aquarium conditions it will accept small live and frozen foods: bloodworm (chironomid larvae), brine shrimp, daphnia, and small crustacean mixes suit it well. Like most gudgeons and benthic gobies it is reluctant to chase food suspended in the water column, preferring to take items from or near the substrate. Dry flake offered at the surface is typically ignored or taken poorly; sinking pellets or wafer-style foods are more likely to be accepted. Variety and a high proportion of live or frozen invertebrate feeds are advisable for long-term condition.

Mating

Gobiomorphus basalis is a resident freshwater breeder — it does not undergo the amphidromous sea-run migration that characterises several of its New Zealand congeners, which means the entire reproductive cycle takes place in fresh water. This separates it sharply from species such as G. cotidianus or G. hubbsi, whose larvae drift to sea after hatching.

Breeding details specific to G. basalis in the wild or in captivity are not well-documented in the available literature. By analogy with other resident Gobiomorphus and Eleotridae generally, the reproductive strategy is expected to involve a male taking up and defending a cavity — a crevice under a stone, a hollow log, or a cave — and courting ripe females to that site. Males in breeding condition in related species show intensified colouration and fin displays to attract or court females. Because the species is a cool-temperate stream fish, spawning in the wild is likely triggered by spring temperature rise and lengthening photoperiod, mirroring the seasonal pattern of North Island streams.

Breeding

Consistent with Eleotridae cave-spawning biology, Cran's bully is expected to lay adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity, with the male remaining to guard and fan the clutch until hatching. This reproductive mode — male-guarded adhesive eggs in a freshwater shelter — is documented for other resident Gobiomorphus species and is the standard pattern in the family for non-amphidromous taxa.

Captive breeding of G. basalis is not confirmed in the available hobbyist or scientific literature, and the species is very rarely kept outside New Zealand. The main practical requirement for any attempt would be providing cool, well-oxygenated water in the 54–64 °F range typical of North Island spring conditions, along with suitable rocky caves or crevices as spawning sites, and a diet of live or frozen invertebrate foods to condition the fish. If eggs are produced, the male should be left undisturbed with the clutch. Because G. basalis is a resident breeder rather than an amphidromous species, captive reproduction is biologically feasible — but it has not yet been verified and no established methodology exists.

In the aquarium

Cran's bully is seldom available in trade outside New Zealand, and keeping it legally requires attention to New Zealand freshwater wildlife regulations, which restrict collection of native fish. For those who can lawfully obtain it, the primary and non-negotiable requirement is cool water: this is a cold-temperate species with a natural range of 39–72 °F, and it will not thrive in a tropical fish room. A dedicated cold-water or room-temperature set-up without a heater, with good filtration and oxygenation, is the correct approach.

The aquarium should replicate a stony New Zealand stream bed: a gravel or cobble substrate, smooth river stones with crevices and caves for shelter, moderate to strong flow, and high dissolved oxygen. Cran's bully is a benthic predator that will eat small tankmates it can swallow, so companions — if any — should be robust, similarly sized cool-water species. Feeding on live and frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp, small crustaceans) is essential; this fish does not readily take dry food from the surface. A tightly fitting lid is advisable, as eleotrids can jump. In short, it is a specialist fish for a dedicated cool-water biotope, not a general community aquarium species.

The main threats to New Zealand's freshwater fish generally — and to G. basalis in particular — are habitat modification through land-use change (pastoral farming, forestry, urban development), water quality deterioration, and predation and competition from introduced species such as brown trout and perch. Because it is a non-migratory resident, it lacks the capacity of amphidromous species to recolonise streams from the sea after local extinction, making intact local populations especially important to maintain.
