Guavina guavina is a small sleeper goby — a gudgeon, not a true goby — that inhabits estuaries, mangroves and brackish coastal waters from the Americas to West Africa. Like all members of the family Eleotridae, it carries separate pelvic fins rather than the fused sucker disc that defines a real goby (Gobiidae), a character that places it in an ancient sister lineage to the true gobies. The only species in the monotypic genus Guavina, it is an euryhaline estuarine resident that tolerates a wide range of salinities and temperatures, feeds as a micro-predator on small crustaceans and invertebrates, and is a resident cave or substrate spawner whose male guards and fans the eggs — meaning the whole breeding cycle can take place in a brackish aquarium without the larvae needing to go to sea.

Taxonomy & naming

Guavina guavina was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1837, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — the governing authority for valid names — places it in the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons. The genus Guavina is monotypic: this is its only species. No older combination is on record; Valenciennes's original placement stands.

The first thing to understand is that Guavina guavina is not a true goby. The true gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) have their pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc. Sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae) keep those fins separate — two distinct fins rather than one disc — and this single morphological character marks the boundary between the two lineages. The hobby and fish markets routinely call Eleotridae 'gobies', and Guavina is no exception, but 'sleeper goby' or 'gudgeon' is the more precise label.

Guavina is phylogenetically placed among the estuarine and brackish eleotrids of the Americas, most closely related to other sleeper lineages in the Neotropics rather than to the Australian gudgeons (Mogurnda, Hypseleotris) or the Indo-Pacific sleepers (Ophiocara, Bostrychus). Its presence in West Africa, if confirmed by modern vouchers, would suggest either an ancient trans-Atlantic distribution or passive dispersal through estuarine currents.

Morphology

Guavina guavina is a small, elongate sleeper goby. FishBase records a standard length range of roughly 1–3 in, with most aquarium specimens falling between 3 and 2 in SL. The body is cylindrical to slightly compressed, with a broad, somewhat flattened head, a large mouth, and prominent eyes set high on the skull — features common to ambush-oriented eleotrids that rest on the substrate and lunge at prey.

The pelvic fins are the definitive field mark: they remain entirely separate, held out from the body as two individual fins with no membrane connecting them at the base. This distinguishes every Eleotridae from the true gobies at a glance. The dorsal fin is divided into two sections (a short spiny anterior and a longer soft posterior), and the caudal fin is rounded. Colouration is typically cryptic — mottled brownish-grey or olive, often with faint banding or spotting that blends with the estuarine substrate of sand, mud and decaying vegetation.

Sexual dimorphism is modest. Males are often slightly larger and develop more vivid colouration and more elaborate fins when in breeding condition; females are rounder-bodied when carrying eggs. Both sexes share the same cryptic pattern, making the female's distended abdomen before spawning the most reliable distinction in a pair.

Habitat

This is an estuarine and brackish-water fish. Guavina guavina inhabits mangrove fringes, tidal creeks, coastal lagoons and the lower reaches of rivers where freshwater and saltwater mix. FishBase records a preferred salinity of roughly 5–15 parts per thousand, making it a euryhaline resident — tolerant of freshwater incursions at the upstream end of tidal reaches and of moderate saltwater intrusion at the other. It can persist in fully fresh water for extended periods but performs best with some salinity.

Temperatures of 72–82 °F cover the core range of its estuarine habitat, though like most pantropical species it tolerates brief excursions outside this band. The substrate is typically soft — mud, sand, shell grit — with abundant cover in the form of submerged roots, fallen vegetation, shells and debris, all of which this cryptic, resting-prone fish uses for shelter and as spawning sites.

The species has a wide pantropical range: it is recorded from Central and South American estuaries — its likely type locality is in Venezuelan or Colombian coastal waters — and from West African coasts. This broad distribution across two continents reflects either a very ancient range or a history of passive dispersal in estuarine currents and coastal drift.

Feeding

Guavina guavina is a micro-predator. In the wild it feeds on small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, amphipods and similar invertebrates picked from the soft substrate or seized in open water. Its broad head and large mouth allow it to take prey that would defeat smaller-mouthed gobies, and it hunts by a combination of slow stalking and short bursts rather than active pursuit.

In the aquarium it performs best on a varied diet of live and frozen foods: bloodworm (chironomid larvae), brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and small earthworm pieces. Many specimens show little interest in dry flake or pellets and will lose condition if fed exclusively on prepared foods. Conditioning a pair for breeding specifically calls for regular live or frozen offerings. The tendency to ignore flake is characteristic of estuarine eleotrids generally and should be factored in before acquiring the fish.

Mating

Guavina guavina is a resident cave or substrate spawner, which means its entire reproductive cycle takes place in brackish or fresh water without any marine larval stage. This puts it in a fundamentally different category from the amphidromous stream gobies — Sicydiinae cling-gobies, many Awaous, and estuarine Eleotris — whose hatchlings must drift to sea to develop and which cannot be bred in captivity. Guavina does not need the sea, and pairs can be induced to spawn in a well-managed brackish aquarium.

Courtship is initiated by the male, who stakes out and defends a cave, shell, crevice or firm overhang and courts a ripe female with lateral displays, fin spreading and colour intensification. Once a female is drawn in and the pair's readiness is synchronised, spawning follows inside or against the defended site. The pair bond formed during courtship is relatively strong by eleotrid standards.

Breeding

The female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof, wall or floor of the chosen cave or against a firm substrate. She then plays no further role in egg care. The male takes sole charge: he guards the spawning site against intruders and fans the eggs continuously with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and remove debris. At typical tropical temperatures the eggs hatch in approximately 5–7 days.

The newly hatched fry are small and require tiny first foods — rotifers or paramecium initially, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely crushed prepared foods as they grow. Because the male is an attentive guardian and the whole cycle is completed in fresh or brackish water, this species can be bred in a home aquarium, distinguishing it from amphidromous eleotrids and gobies that cannot. Maintaining a light salinity — around 3–5 g of marine salt per litre — helps replicate estuarine conditions and tends to improve spawning frequency and fry survival.

In the aquarium

Guavina guavina is best kept in a brackish species tank or a low-salinity community with other euryhaline fish of similar size. A tank of 15–20 US gal suits a pair; a species group needs more space and additional caves to reduce male territorial conflict. The substrate should be soft sand or fine gravel, and the tank should offer plentiful cover in the form of caves, coconut shells, clay pots, large shells and pieces of driftwood — both for the fish's comfort and to provide spawning sites. Filtration should be moderate; the fish is not a strong swimmer and prefers low to gentle current.

Water should be maintained at 72–82 °F with a light brackish addition — approximately 3–8 g of marine salt per litre is a reasonable starting point, though the fish tolerates fresh water. It is not aggressive toward fish of similar size, but it will take any fish small enough to swallow, so tankmates should be of comparable or larger body size. Health and colour are generally better with some salinity.

The key keeper failure is food: this fish will often ignore dry flake entirely. Any keeper who cannot supply a regular rotation of bloodworm, brine shrimp or daphnia should think carefully before acquiring it. Beyond that it is hardy, low-maintenance, and — once a compatible pair is established — willing to breed, offering a rewarding estuarine project for the keeper who wants something off the beaten track.

Conservation

Guavina guavina has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a status that cannot be verified. Its wide distribution across the estuaries of the Americas and West Africa, combined with its euryhaline tolerance and association with common estuarine habitats, suggests it is not immediately threatened at the range level, though no systematic survey data are available.

Estuarine species face chronic pressures from coastal development, mangrove clearance, pollution and altered hydrology — threats that affect many small sleeper gobies that are never formally evaluated because their conservation biology has not been studied. Trade pressure appears low: Guavina guavina is only occasionally offered in the aquarium trade, and what is available is most likely wild-collected from coastal estuaries, since captive breeding remains uncommon. Buyers would be wise to ask about origin, and to seek tank-raised stock where it is available.
