Mugilogobius tigrinus, the tiger dwarf goby, is one of the smallest true gobies in the hobby — a brackish-water specialist barely two centimetres long, described from a mangrove creek at Sungei Pandan, Singapore, and named for its boldly barred, tiger-like pattern. Like all true gobies it belongs to the family Oxudercidae, and its pelvic fins are fused into the characteristic cup-shaped sucker disc that separates the real gobies from the sleepers and gudgeons. Most gobies are marine; this diminutive species bridges estuaries and mangrove fringes across Southeast Asia, a reminder that the handful of gobies in the freshwater hobby represent a vast, overwhelmingly saltwater family. It is a resident cave-spawner capable of breeding in a well-maintained brackish nano tank, but its brackish requirements and micro-scale size demand specific husbandry that rewards the attentive keeper.

Taxonomy & naming

Mugilogobius tigrinus was formally described by Helen Larson in 2001 in her major revision of the genus Mugilogobius, published in Records of the Western Australian Museum Supplement No. 62. The holotype, ZRC 40283, was collected from a mangrove creek at Sungei Pandan, Singapore, which remains the type locality. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats it as a valid species under the current classification, and the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) confirms Larson, 2001 as the valid authority.

The genus Mugilogobius sits within the family Oxudercidae — the family that accommodates the true gobies following the broad reclassification of the Gobiiformes over the past two decades. This is important context: true gobies (including Mugilogobius) carry their pelvic fins fused into a cup-like sucker disc, a character that cleanly separates them from the sleeper gobies (Eleotridae) and gudgeons whose pelvic fins remain separate. Gobies are overwhelmingly marine in their diversity; the small number of freshwater and brackish-adapted species, of which M. tigrinus is one, are the exceptions. The epithet tigrinus is Latin for 'tiger-coloured', describing the barred or striped pattern that is the species's most striking field mark.

Older goby literature may place small Southeast Asian species under Gobius or Vaimosa; the current genus Mugilogobius was established to accommodate a suite of small, shallow-water Indo-Pacific gobies. No synonyms are recorded for tigrinus itself.

Morphology

Mugilogobius tigrinus is a very small goby, reaching a maximum standard length of around 1 in — among the smallest vertebrates kept in the marine and brackish hobby. FishBase records 7 dorsal spines, 6–7 dorsal soft rays, 1 anal spine, and 6–7 anal soft rays, with 26 vertebrae, a typical gobiid count for the genus. The body is elongate and slightly compressed, the head broad and blunt in the goby fashion.

The species is named for its pattern: the flanks carry bold, dark vertical bars or blotches on a paler background, producing the tiger-like banding that makes it recognisable even at its tiny size. Like all true gobies, the pelvic fins are fused into a sucker-like disc on the underside of the body; this disc anchors the fish against current and is the anatomical hallmark that distinguishes the true gobies from the superficially similar sleepers (Eleotridae).

Sexual dimorphism in this species is not well documented in the aquarium literature, but males in breeding condition typically develop brighter colouration and may show more intense barring. Females approaching spawning condition are likely to appear fuller in the body. At only two centimetres, even minor size differences can be difficult to assess.

Habitat

Mugilogobius tigrinus is a brackish-water specialist native to mangrove creeks, estuaries and tidal channels across Southeast Asia. The type locality is a mangrove creek in Singapore, and known records extend through peninsular Thailand and Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and into the eastern Indian Ocean via the Andaman Islands, where new distributional records from Indian waters were documented in 2023. GBIF records confirm the species's affinity for estuarine and near-coastal environments across the Eastern Indian Ocean and Western Central Pacific.

In its natural habitat the fish occupies the lower reaches of mangrove-fringed creeks and shallow tidal channels with sandy or silty substrates. These are environments with fluctuating salinity, moderate current and abundant cover among mangrove roots, rocks and debris. Although some populations have been recorded in or near fresh water (as documented in the Andaman Islands freshwater stream records), the core habitat and physiology of the species is brackish: the alkaline pH (8.1–8.4) and specific gravity of natural estuaries set the baseline water chemistry requirements for healthy captive specimens.

Feeding

Mugilogobius tigrinus is a micro-predator. In the wild it targets small invertebrates of the estuarine and mangrove zone: copepods, small crustaceans, zooplankton and insect larvae. Its small mouth is calibrated for prey at the scale of the organisms that populate sandy, brackish substrates.

In the aquarium, small live and frozen foods are essential. Copepods, cyclops, artemia (brine shrimp), mysis and finely chopped krill are all accepted and should form the core of the diet. Like most gobies, M. tigrinus typically refuses or barely tolerates dry flake food, especially when newly acquired; a fish maintained solely on dried foods will lose condition and vitality over time. Conditioning a breeding pair calls for a varied menu of live and frozen micro-foods. At only two centimetres, food particle size matters — oversized items will simply be ignored.

Mating

Mugilogobius tigrinus is a resident cave/burrow spawner — a breeding strategy shared by many small gobies that complete their entire life cycle in fresh or brackish water without a marine larval phase. In contrast to the amphidromous cling-gobies (Stiphodon, Sicyopterus) whose larvae are swept to the sea and cannot be captive-bred, a resident spawner like M. tigrinus can complete the full reproductive cycle in a well-maintained aquarium.

In the breeding season, which corresponds to warmer months in the natural range, males intensify their barred colouration and establish burrows or claim crevices and hiding places among rocks and substrate. Courtship is energetic: males attract females with fin displays and, reportedly, brief jumping behaviour — a degree of agonistic display expected in a territorial small goby. A receptive female is led into the male's burrow or cave to spawn.

Breeding

Spawning takes place inside the male's burrow or chosen cave: the female lays a batch of adhesive eggs on the inner surface, and once spawning is complete she departs. From that point the male takes sole responsibility for the clutch, guarding the entrance and regularly fanning and aerating the eggs with his fins until they hatch. Incubation is relatively short; the larvae are independent upon hatching and receive no further parental care.

Aquarium breeding is achievable given correct water conditions — brackish water at the right specific gravity and alkaline pH is non-negotiable. Provide small caves, sections of pipe or crevices in rocky décor as spawning sites, and condition the pair on live and frozen micro-foods in the weeks before a breeding attempt. First foods for the tiny fry are necessarily very fine: rotifers, cultured copepod nauplii or other micro-live foods are needed before they can take newly hatched artemia. The very small adult size means the fry are proportionally minute, and the brackish environment must be maintained throughout rearing.

In the aquarium

The tiger dwarf goby is a specialist nano fish best suited to a dedicated brackish setup rather than a community freshwater aquarium. A tank of 15 US gal is a practical minimum; brackish water at a specific gravity of 1.020–1.025 and a pH of 8.1–8.4 is essential — this is not a fish to be kept in neutral, soft fresh water. Temperature should sit in the range of 72–79 °F, towards the cooler end of tropical. Efficient filtration and steady flow are important, reflecting the tidal-creek environment; the tank should be well oxygenated.

Decoration should prioritise rocky crevices, caves, and a sandy or fine-gravel substrate with some driftwood for cover. The species is territorial at the scale of its tiny body, so males may squabble if crowded, and providing multiple hiding places reduces conflict. A tight-fitting lid is advised, as gobies are prone to jumping. It is reef-safe and can be kept with other small brackish-tolerant species of similar size — small brackish mollies, certain Stenogobius, or other dwarf gobies — but should not be mixed with fish large enough to eat it. Diet of small live and frozen foods is non-negotiable; a fish kept only on flake will decline.

Conservation

Mugilogobius tigrinus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). The species occupies estuarine and mangrove habitats across Southeast Asia — environments under sustained pressure from coastal development, mangrove clearance, aquaculture expansion and water-quality degradation across the region. The 2023 distributional records from the Andaman Islands suggest the species may have a broader range than previously documented, which is a moderately encouraging sign, though these peripheral freshwater-stream records require further study to determine whether they represent established resident populations or occasional strays.

Like most small, estuarine gobies, M. tigrinus is rarely a target of large-scale commercial collection; its tiny size limits its trade volume, and most specimens offered in the hobby derive from incidental collection alongside other brackish micro-fish. Ongoing loss and degradation of mangrove habitat across Southeast Asia remains the principal long-term threat to species tied to these ecosystems. Formal assessment by the IUCN would be a useful baseline for tracking its status.
