Scartelaos histophorus, the walking goby, is one of the smaller and less familiar of the mudskippers — a group of amphibious true gobies (family Oxudercidae) that have taken the intertidal mudflat as their home and spend much of their lives out of water. Like all true gobies it carries the fused pelvic sucker disc that distinguishes the lineage from the sleeper gudgeons, and like all mudskippers it is a paludarium fish, not an aquarium fish: it needs land to haul out onto, brackish water, and high humidity. Widespread across the mangrove estuaries and tidal mudflats of the Indo-West Pacific, from the Persian Gulf and Indian coasts east through Southeast Asia to northern Australia, it feeds on minute soil invertebrates and microbial films, digs a J- or Y-shaped burrow in the mud to shelter and spawn in, and is rarely if ever kept or bred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Scartelaos histophorus was formally described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1837, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — records it in the genus Scartelaos, family Oxudercidae. The species belongs to the subfamily Oxudercinae, the mudskippers proper, which also includes the better-known genera Periophthalmus, Boleophthalmus, and Periophthalmodon.

The name Scartelaos viridis (Hamilton, 1822), based on Hamilton's Gobius viridis and, historically, the type species of the genus Scartelaos, has also been used for this fish. Some regional and hobby sources still treat viridis as the accepted name, but the Catalog of Fishes treats Scartelaos viridis as a junior synonym of Scartelaos histophorus, and it is under the histophorus combination that the name is currently regarded as valid. "Green mudskipper" and "bearded mudskipper" — common names built on the viridis identity — refer to the same fish described here.

Scartelaos histophorus is a true goby. The gobies in the broad sense (Gobioidei) are an enormous radiation split across several families — Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae, Eleotridae and others — and the mudskippers sit within Oxudercidae. The feature that unites the true gobies and separates them from the sleeper gudgeons (Eleotridae) is the pelvic-fin disc: in true gobies the pelvic fins are fused at the base into a cup-like sucker disc; in eleotrids they remain separate. The common name 'walking goby' captures both the family placement and the animal's most striking habit.

Morphology

Scartelaos histophorus reaches up to about 5.5 in in standard length (FishBase), a mid-sized mudskipper — smaller than the large Periophthalmodon or Periophthalmus species familiar from documentaries, but not among the smallest of the family. The body is slender and elongate, the head proportionally large with high-set, mobile eyes that can be swivelled and retracted into moistened sockets — a defining mudskipper adaptation for surveying the mudflat while keeping the corneas wet. The pelvic fins are fused into the sucker disc characteristic of all true gobies, used to prop the fish upright and anchor it on the mud.

The body is drab olive-brown with a whitish belly, subdued enough for a fish that lives on exposed tidal mud. The dorsal fin is long and carries the sail-like first dorsal typical of the genus, which functions in territorial display and courtship signalling. Sex can be difficult to determine externally outside the breeding season; during courtship males display prominently and may show brighter fin coloration.

Habitat

This species is an inhabitant of brackish intertidal mudflats and mangrove estuaries throughout the Indo-West Pacific, from the coasts of the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka and the Persian Gulf east through Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines to Australia. It occupies the soft, exposed mud of tidal margins where it is emersed during low tide and partially or fully submerged during high tide — a habitat that most fish cannot exploit.

As a true air-breather, Scartelaos histophorus draws oxygen through its skin and through the vascularised lining of its gill chambers, which it keeps moist by retaining water when out of the water. It burrows into soft mud — digging J- or Y-shaped tunnels that serve as refuges from predators, shelter in extreme heat, and spawning chambers. The salinity range spans brackish conditions typical of estuarine mudflats, broadly 10–18 ppt; the fish is not a marine open-water animal nor a freshwater species, but an intertidal specialist.

Feeding

Scartelaos histophorus feeds on the mudflat surface during low-tide emersion, taking minute prey from the top layer of mud: copepods, ostracods, nematodes, small insect larvae, and microbial biofilm (diatoms, cyanobacteria) that coat the exposed mud. It forages by scooping and sifting the substrate surface with its jaws, using its pectoral fins to crutch across the mud as it moves from patch to patch.

In the aquarium or paludarium this diet is challenging to replicate. The fish needs live or frozen micro-prey — copepods, brine shrimp nauplii, daphnia, bloodworm chopped fine — and may also graze biofilm from exposed surfaces. It is not suited to dried flake or pellet foods and will typically refuse them or decline rapidly in condition without live or high-quality frozen alternatives. This strict dietary requirement is one of the main obstacles to long-term captive husbandry.

Mating

Like all mudskippers, Scartelaos histophorus breeds in a burrow. Territorial males dig and defend a J- or Y-shaped burrow in the soft mud, and during the breeding season they perform elaborate above-ground displays — erecting the sail-like first dorsal, leaping, and charging rivals — to establish territory and attract females. Courtship involves the male leading the female to the burrow entrance and displaying at close range.

The female enters the burrow to inspect it, and if she accepts, the pair spawn inside. This burrow-centred mating system is in sharp contrast to the open-water egg-scattering of cyprinids or the mouthbrooding of many cichlids — mudskipper reproduction is a specialised, parental-care strategy adapted entirely to the intertidal environment.

Breeding

The female lays adhesive eggs that are attached to the wall or ceiling of the burrow interior. The male then fills the closed upper chamber with air — carrying it down in his gill chambers in repeated trips to the surface — creating a pocket of oxygen-rich air around the clutch. He guards the eggs in this air chamber and continues to replenish the air supply until the eggs hatch. The larvae are pelagic and are released or washed into the estuarine water column, where they develop as marine or estuarine plankton before settling back onto the mudflat.

This combination of burrow spawning, parental male guarding, and pelagic larvae means that Scartelaos histophorus is essentially never bred in captivity. Replicating the precise tidal-flat dynamics, burrow conditions, and early larval requirements in a home paludarium is not currently achievable by hobbyists, and essentially all fish encountered in the rare instances they appear in the trade are wild-caught. This is an observation fish, not a breeding project.

In the aquarium

Scartelaos histophorus is a specialist animal that demands a paludarium, not a conventional aquarium. It must have a substantial land area — soft, moist, compactable substrate such as beach sand mixed with clay or fine mud — into which it can burrow, combined with a shallow brackish-water section and very high ambient humidity (a tight-fitting cover is essential). Salinity in the water zone should approximate estuarine conditions, roughly 10–18 ppt, and temperature should be kept in the 75–82 °F range. A full-cover lid is critical: mudskippers are agile and will escape through any gap.

Because these fish are wild-collected, importation is stressful and specimens arrive in variable condition. Feeding is the major ongoing challenge: live copepods, daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and chopped bloodworm are the foundation of the diet, and a fish that will not feed is a fish in decline. Tank space should be generous enough for each specimen to hold a small territory; males are territorial and will fight, so either keep a single specimen or allow enough room — and ideally burrowing depth — for natural spacing. Most keepers who succeed with mudskippers treat them as a long-term paludarium project rather than a community tank addition.

Conservation

Scartelaos histophorus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category; we record it here as Not Evaluated rather than assign a speculative status. The species is widespread across the mangrove estuaries and tidal mudflats of the Indo-West Pacific, which in principle suggests resilience, but mangrove ecosystems throughout its range face sustained pressure from coastal development, aquaculture pond conversion, pollution, and sea-level change.

Mudskippers as a group are not significant targets of the aquarium trade — their specialised requirements and limited breeding in captivity keep demand low — but where wild collection does occur, all individuals are taken from nature. The primary conservation concern for Scartelaos histophorus is the same as for all intertidal mangrove specialists: the ongoing reduction and degradation of mangrove forest and mudflat habitat across Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean coasts. Formal assessment would be a useful first step in tracking any population trends.
