Taxonomy & naming
Anabas cobojius was described by Francis Hamilton in 1822 in his influential account of the fishes of the Ganges, An Account of the Fishes Found in the River Ganges and Its Branches. Hamilton's original description was based on specimens from the Ganges drainage of the Indian subcontinent, and the species has been linked to that river system ever since. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Anabas cobojius (Hamilton, 1822), with the parenthetical authority acknowledging that Hamilton originally placed the species in a different genus before Anabas was established in its current sense.
The genus Anabas belongs to the family Anabantidae, the true climbing perches, within the suborder Anabantoidei — the labyrinth fishes. Two species are currently recognised under Anabas: the widespread A. testudineus and the more restricted A. cobojius. The two are closely similar in appearance and biology, and the boundary between them has not always been consistently applied in the older literature; some specimens from the Ganges delta region have been assigned to one or the other depending on the authority consulted. Molecular and morphological work on the genus remains limited.
Morphology
Anabas cobojius is a medium-sized, moderately deep-bodied perch-like fish reaching up to 12 in total length, though most specimens encountered in the wild and in markets are considerably smaller. The body is robust and slightly compressed, with a large head, a wide, upturned mouth suited to taking prey at the surface or in the water column, and a rough, ctenoid-scaled surface that gives the fish a distinctly spiny feel to the hand.
The dorsal fin is long, running most of the length of the back, with strong spines anteriorly. The pectoral fins are rounded. Coloration is generally a dull olive-grey to brownish on the back and sides, fading to pale or yellowish on the belly; a dark spot is often present at the base of the caudal fin. The operculum bears small spines — a characteristic of the genus that assists in overland movement. Sexual dimorphism is not conspicuous externally, though ripe females become noticeably distended with eggs prior to spawning.
Habitat
Anabas cobojius is native to the Ganges River basin across the lowland plains of India and Bangladesh. It inhabits a wide range of lentic and slow-moving freshwater environments: lakes, ponds, marshes, roadside ditches, irrigation canals, and paddy fields. It is particularly associated with shallow, warm, often turbid standing water — the kind of habitat that becomes hypoxic in the heat of the dry season and that most fish cannot tolerate.
The species' possession of a labyrinth organ (a suprabranchial chamber with highly vascularised, labyrinthine plates) allows it to extract oxygen directly from air, making it an obligate air-breather that must have access to the surface. This adaptation is the key to its ecological success in warm, stagnant, low-oxygen habitats across the subcontinent. Water temperatures across its range are tropical, broadly 72–82 °F, and the fish can survive brief periods out of water — a trait shared with the congener A. testudineus, which is famous for moving between water bodies overland. Whether A. cobojius similarly migrates overland is not well documented but is assumed given the genus's biology.
Feeding
Anabas cobojius is carnivorous, feeding primarily on aquatic invertebrates and their larvae — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and similar prey — as well as small fish when opportunity allows. Its broad, upward-angled mouth and ambush-capable body form make it an effective predator in shallow, weedy water.
In floodplain environments it likely exploits the seasonal pulse of invertebrate productivity that follows flooding of paddy fields and marshes. As a commercial food fish it is commonly fed supplementary diets in small-scale aquaculture operations in Bangladesh and West Bengal, where its tolerance of crowding and poor water quality makes it a practical species for low-input pond culture.
Mating
Based on the well-documented biology of its congener Anabas testudineus — for which controlled aquarium studies exist (Zworykin, 2012) — Anabas cobojius is expected to be an open-water egg-scatterer. In this reproductive mode, which is confirmed for the genus, a pair rises to the surface and releases eggs and sperm into the open water; the eggs are buoyant and float at or near the surface, drifting with gentle currents.
There is no nest construction, no bubble nest, and no paternal guarding of either eggs or larvae — a pattern distinct from many other labyrinth fishes in the families Osphronemidae and Helostomatidae, which build elaborate bubble nests or practise mouthbrooding. The lack of parental investment in Anabas is compensated by high fecundity. Specific courtship behaviour in A. cobojius has not been described in the literature.
Breeding
Anabas cobojius is a prolific open-water egg-scatterer producing buoyant eggs that float at the water surface with no parental care. Based on the genus biology documented for A. testudineus, spawning involves a pair coming together near the surface, the male wrapping around the female in a brief embrace, and both sexes releasing gametes simultaneously into the water column. The fertilised eggs are positively buoyant and hatch within approximately 24 hours under warm tropical conditions.
The species is fecund, and large females can produce thousands of eggs per spawning event. Hatchlings are tiny and initially feed on zooplankton and microorganisms present at the water surface. The species is used in small-scale aquaculture in Bangladesh and India and can be induced to spawn using hormonal stimulation in hatchery settings, though detailed published protocols specific to A. cobojius are sparse. Its breeding biology under fully natural conditions in the Ganges floodplain has not been studied in detail.
In the aquarium
Anabas cobojius is occasionally kept in aquaria by specialist hobbyists interested in South Asian anabantoids, but it is not an established trade species and is rarely seen in the hobby outside its native region. Its requirements are similar to those of A. testudineus: a spacious aquarium with a secure, tight-fitting lid (the fish can escape and survive out of water), warm water in the range of 72–82 °F, and stable but not especially demanding water chemistry — a broadly neutral pH and moderate hardness reflect its floodplain home.
The species is predatory and will eat any fish small enough to fit in its mouth, making tankmate selection important; robust fish of similar or larger size are appropriate. It tolerates low dissolved oxygen well, benefiting from surface access for aerial respiration rather than requiring vigorous aeration. Feeding is straightforward: meaty foods — live or frozen invertebrates, whole or chunked fish, earthworms — are preferred, though pellets and other prepared foods are accepted once the fish is settled. As a commercially important food fish in its native range it is more likely to be encountered there than in international trade.
Conservation
Anabas cobojius is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in May 2010. The Data Deficient designation reflects a lack of sufficient information to make a reliable assessment of extinction risk — not an implication that the species is unthreatened. Population-level data, range-wide abundance estimates, and trend information are all lacking.
The species' floodplain habitat in the Ganges basin faces ongoing pressures from agricultural intensification, water extraction and diversion, siltation, and the conversion of wetlands and seasonal marshes to permanent agriculture. One source notes that siltation in particular may threaten its native habitat. However, the fish's tolerance of degraded, shallow, and oxygen-poor water gives it some resilience against environmental change, and it remains a locally significant food source harvested from wild populations. The scale of wild harvest relative to population size is unknown. Resolution of its Data Deficient status would require targeted field surveys and population assessment across the Ganges system.
