Taxonomy & naming
Anabas testudineus was described by the German physician-naturalist Marcus Elieser Bloch in 1792, with a type locality recorded as 'Japan' — an error almost certainly reflecting mislabelled trade material; the species does not occur in Japan. Bloch placed it in the genus Anthias, and the authority is therefore presented in parentheses to indicate the name has since been moved. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Anabas testudineus (Bloch, 1792), placing it in the monotypic (or near-monotypic) genus Anabas within the family Anabantidae, the true climbing perches.
The specific epithet testudineus is Latin for 'tortoise-like' or 'turtle-like', a reference to the hard, rough, scale-covered body that gives the fish its armoured appearance — the overlapping, keeled scales and the rigid, spiny gill covers that the fish uses to anchor itself when moving over land. The genus name Anabas derives from the Greek anabainō, meaning 'to go up' or 'to climb', a direct allusion to the overland-travel habit for which the species is famous.
The taxonomy is unsettled at the population level. Seriously Fish and the 2019 IUCN assessment both note that molecular and morphological evidence from across the species' broad range points to multiple genetically distinct lineages that may warrant separate specific status. Wild populations have also been compromised by decades of aquaculture escapes, making it increasingly difficult to assign individuals to a native population with confidence. Until a formal taxonomic revision is completed, the name Anabas testudineus applies to all populations under the current Catalog of Fishes treatment.
Morphology
The climbing perch is a robustly built, moderately compressed fish reaching up to 10 in total length (FishBase), though most adults in the wild and in captivity are substantially smaller — individuals commonly mature at 4–4.5 in standard length, and Seriously Fish gives a maximum of 6–8 in SL. The body is oval in outline, stocky, and covered in relatively large, rough, ctenoid scales that extend onto the head and operculum. The opercular bones are modified into strong, serrated structures that the fish deploys like grappling hooks when crawling across land.
Colouration is generally drab and cryptic: an olive-brown to greyish or greenish-bronze base, often with indistinct darker mottling or banding. The flanks may show a faint iridescence under good lighting. A distinctive black spot — diamond- or oval-shaped — is present on the caudal peduncle, and breeding males develop a reddish flush to the body and a blacker, more defined version of this spot. The fins are plain, the dorsal and anal fins carrying the stiff spines typical of the family. There is little difference between the sexes outside of breeding condition; females become noticeably rounder-bellied when gravid.
Habitat
Few freshwater fishes match the habitat breadth of the climbing perch. Its native range runs from Pakistan and India (including the Gangetic plain) through Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, southern China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and Singapore — the full sweep of South and Southeast Asian lowland freshwater. It has been introduced and become established in parts of Indonesia beyond its native range, Madagascar, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Pacific island groups. Within this range it occupies virtually every standing or slow-moving water type: swamps, marshes, natural lakes, oxbow lakes, reservoirs, canals, rice paddies, roadside ditches, tidal creeks, and both tributary and main-channel rivers in lowland settings.
Water chemistry tolerances are correspondingly wide. Seriously Fish records a temperature range of 59–86 °F and pH 5.5–8.0, with hardness spanning from very soft to very hard (36–447 ppm). The species is also euryhaline, thriving in mildly brackish coastal and estuarine water. This tolerance of warm, still, oxygen-depleted conditions is the direct product of the suprabranchial labyrinth organ — a folded, vascularised accessory respiratory structure above the gill chamber that lets the fish breathe atmospheric air — and explains how it survives in stagnant paddies and shallow pools that would asphyxiate a gill-breathing fish.
The overland migration behaviour that gives the species its common name is triggered by desiccation of home waters, by temperature extremes, or simply by the search for food. The fish uses its stiff pectoral fins, the spines of its gill covers, and its tail to prop and lever itself forward. It can survive for days or weeks out of water provided its surface and labyrinth organ remain moist, and in humid tropical conditions it can cover substantial distances between water bodies.
Feeding
The climbing perch is broadly predatory and opportunistic, feeding at whatever trophic level is available. Seriously Fish describes the wild diet as chiefly predatory, including small fishes, invertebrates, and molluscs, alongside significant amounts of vegetative matter — algae and rice grains in paddy habitats — reflecting the opportunism of a species that routinely encounters flooded rice fields. The jaw is strong and the gape substantial relative to body size.
In captivity the fish is easy to feed: it accepts live, frozen, and prepared foods without hesitation. Pellets, earthworms, small feeder fish, frozen fish flesh, shrimps, and large dried foods are all taken. Because it grows to a meaningful size and is a capable predator, tankmates must be chosen with care — anything small enough to fit in the mouth is at risk. Regular, varied feeding with meaty foods in appropriate proportions maintains condition and reduces aggression driven by hunger.
Mating
Anabas testudineus is an open-water egg-scatterer with no parental care — an unusual reproductive strategy for a labyrinth fish, since the majority of anabantoids build bubble nests or practice mouthbrooding. The species spawns in open water, typically at the onset of or during the rainy season when rising water levels flood new habitats and provide the food abundance and spatial cover that favours fry survival. In nature, spawning is understood to be a group event rather than a monogamous pairing: the mating system is polygamous and promiscuous, as documented by both field observations and breeding studies.
Males in breeding condition develop the characteristic reddish flush and a sharply defined black caudal spot. A spawning embrace occurs in open water: the male wraps around the female as eggs and sperm are released simultaneously. Each embrace yields approximately 200 eggs; females are highly fecund, producing 5,000–35,000 eggs per spawning event across multiple embraces. The eggs are spherical to slightly oval, clear with a pearlescent sheen, non-adhesive, and buoyant — they float at or just below the water surface rather than sinking to the substrate.
Breeding
In the wild, spawning follows the onset of the monsoon rains, which expand available habitat and dilute accumulated waste products in stagnant standing waters. The floating eggs hatch after approximately 24 hours. Larvae are very small (around 0.5 in) and become free-swimming within roughly two days of hatching; development is rapid in warm water. The labyrinth organ develops progressively in juveniles and is not functional at hatching — young fish rely on gill respiration initially, making water oxygenation important in the early weeks.
Under aquarium conditions, breeding can be induced with gradual temperature increases and water changes simulating seasonal cues, or through hormone injection in aquaculture settings — where females spawn approximately 9–10 hours after injection. Spawning is intermittent rather than a single mass-release event, consistent with the open-water scattering strategy. Because the adults provide no care and will readily consume eggs and fry, the eggs or the spawning pair should be separated promptly after spawning. Rearing fry requires appropriately sized first foods — infusoria or commercial fry powder — before graduating to nauplii and finely minced meaty foods. Growth rate is faster than in many anabantoids and the fish reach sexual maturity in under one year at 4–4.5 in.
In the aquarium
The climbing perch is a hardy and adaptable aquarium fish, but it is a large, aggressive, predatory species and not a community tank choice. Its minimum practical housing is a spacious, covered aquarium — the tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable, since a fish capable of walking between ponds will escape through any gap left open. It is best kept singly or in well-matched pairs in a species or near-species setup; multiple individuals will quarrel unless given substantial space and shelter.
Decoration should provide line-of-sight breaks: large pieces of driftwood, clay pots, and rock formations create territories and reduce conflict. The species is undemanding about water chemistry within the wide range recorded in nature (pH 5.5–8.0, temperature 72–86 °F, tolerant of mild brackish conditions), but stable, clean water with efficient filtration is important — its ability to survive poor conditions does not mean it thrives in them. Surface access for air-breathing is essential, as it is for all labyrinth fishes.
The fish is of considerable importance as a food fish across South and Southeast Asia; it is cultivated in ponds across the region and is a commercially significant species in aquaculture. In the aquarium context it appeals mainly to specialist hobbyists interested in anabantoid biology or Asian predatory fish; its ornamental qualities are modest but its behavioural complexity — the overland locomotion, the readiness to display, the visible intelligence of an active ambush predator — make it a rewarding specimen fish for those with the space for it.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessment of 2019 places Anabas testudineus in the Data Deficient (DD) category — a status that reflects not ecological security but taxonomic uncertainty. Assessors from Sri Lanka and Indonesia noted that the climbing perch as currently circumscribed is almost certainly a species complex: multiple geographically separated populations show significant genetic and morphological divergence and may represent distinct species with narrower individual ranges and therefore higher conservation vulnerability than the aggregate distribution implies. Decades of aquaculture activity have further blurred the picture, with escaped farmed fish interbreeding with wild populations across the range and making it difficult to assess true population trends for any putative taxon within the complex.
Beyond the taxonomic problem, the climbing perch faces threats common to lowland freshwater fish across its range: habitat loss and degradation through wetland drainage, irrigation, and conversion of seasonal floodplains and rice paddy systems to intensive agriculture; water pollution from agricultural run-off and domestic waste; and heavy fishing pressure, since it is valued both as a food fish and in the ornamental trade. Ironically, the species has also become an invasive pest outside its native range — in Papua New Guinea and parts of Indonesia and the Pacific it poses a predation threat to smaller native fishes. The resolution of its taxonomy is the necessary first step toward a meaningful conservation assessment, and until that is accomplished the DD listing is the honest position.
