Ctenopoma ashbysmithi is one of the least-known members of its genus — a small African climbing perch collected once, from an unnamed marsh ten kilometres southwest of Kindu in the Lualaba drainage of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and not reliably observed in the wild or in the aquarium hobby since. Described by Banister and Bailey in 1979 from material gathered in 1974–75, the species reaches barely 1.5 in standard length and remains known solely from its type series. Its obscurity is not a reflection of unimportance: the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, acknowledging that so little is known of its current status that no reliable threat assessment can be made.

Taxonomy & naming

Ctenopoma ashbysmithi was described by Keith Edward Banister and Richard Geoffrey Bailey in 1979, based on specimens collected in 1974–75 from a marsh near Kindu, in the Lualaba River drainage of what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Ctenopoma ashbysmithi Banister & Bailey, 1979. The species has not been subject to subsequent revision or synonymy, and it remains placed in Ctenopoma, the largest genus of the family Anabantidae.

Ctenopoma is an African genus of climbing perches and bushfishes that ranges across sub-Saharan Africa from West Africa through the Congo basin and into East Africa. It is distinguished from the Asian anabantid genera by geography and by certain osteological and squamation characters; members share the labyrinth organ that defines the order Anabantiformes. C. ashbysmithi sits within the broader Congo-drainage assemblage of the genus, most of which are known from lowland swamps, marshes, and slow-flowing forest streams.

Morphology

Ctenopoma ashbysmithi is a small species, reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length — near the lower end of the size range for the genus. The available literature describes it as anabatoid in general form and broadly similar to Ctenopoma nigropannosum, another small Congo-basin Ctenopoma, though the two are distinguished by characters in the original description.

Beyond the type-series description, detailed morphological data for this species are sparse. Like all Ctenopoma, it bears ctenii — small, comb-like teeth along the scale margins of the posterior body, a feature that gives the genus its name — and possesses a well-developed suprabranchial labyrinth organ enabling obligate air-breathing. Colour pattern in life is not documented from living specimens, as the species has apparently never been observed alive outside of the original collecting event.

Habitat

The sole confirmed locality for Ctenopoma ashbysmithi is an unnamed marsh approximately 6 mi southwest of Kindu, in the upper Congo River basin (Lualaba drainage), eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This is tropical lowland terrain at mid-elevation in central Africa, where marshes and slow-moving backwaters are characteristic habitats for small anabantids.

No water-chemistry data were recorded for the type locality. By analogy with other Ctenopoma species and with the broader ecology of Congo lowland marshes, conditions were likely warm (tropical ambient), possibly soft to moderately hard, and with low dissolved oxygen — the typical setting in which the labyrinth organ confers its greatest advantage. The species has not been re-collected from this or any other site since the original 1974–75 expedition, leaving its broader range, habitat preferences, and population status unknown.

Feeding

No feeding data specific to Ctenopoma ashbysmithi have been published. The genus as a whole is carnivorous: Ctenopoma species are ambush or stalking predators that feed on small invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans, and small fishes in proportion to body size. The small maximum size of C. ashbysmithi suggests it would occupy a diet of correspondingly small prey — aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and similar items — consistent with marshland microhabitats.

Because the species has never been maintained in captivity, there are no observations of captive feeding behaviour to draw upon.

Mating

No mating observations exist for Ctenopoma ashbysmithi. Based on genus-level information for Ctenopoma, the expected reproductive mode is open-water egg-scattering with no parental care: pairs embrace in typical anabantid fashion, releasing buoyant or semi-buoyant eggs and sperm into the water column, with the eggs floating to the surface or drifting in still water. No nest is constructed and no parental guarding of eggs or fry has been documented for members of this genus.

This reproductive mode is inferred by analogy with the best-studied Ctenopoma species and should be treated as provisional for C. ashbysmithi until direct observation is possible.

Breeding

Ctenopoma ashbysmithi has never been bred in captivity, and no breeding data exist for the wild population beyond what can be inferred from the genus. In other Ctenopoma species studied in aquarium conditions, spawning follows the open-water egg-scatter pattern: buoyant eggs are released during an embrace, float to the surface, and receive no parental attention; adults may consume eggs and are typically separated from the spawn. Incubation and fry-rearing details for the genus depend on temperature and species, but hatch times on the order of 24–48 hours and free-swimming fry within a few days are typical for the broader anabantid group.

Whether C. ashbysmithi conforms to this pattern in detail remains unconfirmed. The species is not present in the hobby and has not been subject to any captive-breeding programme.

In the aquarium

Ctenopoma ashbysmithi is not available in the aquarium hobby and, to the extent of published records, has never been kept in captivity. It has not appeared in the ornamental fish trade and no husbandry notes exist. The species is known solely from museum specimens.

For hobbyists interested in related species, the genus Ctenopoma includes several more readily available members — including the widely kept leopard bushfish (C. acutirostre) and the dwarf or mottled bushfish (C. nigropannosum) — that share the group's characteristic stalking behaviour, labyrinth-organ air-breathing, and preference for well-planted, dimly lit aquaria with subdued flow. These provide a practical window into the biology of a genus that, in the case of C. ashbysmithi, remains almost entirely out of reach.

Conservation

Ctenopoma ashbysmithi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 16 February 2009). The Data Deficient listing is an honest acknowledgement of near-total ignorance: the species is known only from its type locality, has not been re-collected in more than four decades, and there is insufficient information about its distribution, population size, or the condition of its habitat to assign a threat category.

That the species has not been seen alive since Banister and Bailey collected it in 1974–75 is itself a concern, though it may also reflect the extreme scarcity of ichthyological survey work in the Kindu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Political instability and the logistical difficulty of accessing remote marshland in east-central DRC have kept the area poorly documented. Whether C. ashbysmithi persists in its type marsh, has expanded to other sites, or has declined cannot be determined without targeted field survey. A reassessment grounded in modern survey data would be the most important conservation step for this species.
