Taxonomy & naming
Ctenopoma kingsleyae was described by Albert Günther in 1896, with type material from the Ogooué River system of what is now Gabon. The species belongs to the family Anabantidae and the genus Ctenopoma — the African climbing perches and bushfishes — a group of roughly two dozen species distributed across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to the Congo basin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Ctenopoma kingsleyae Günther, 1896.
The specific epithet honours Mary Henrietta Kingsley (1862–1900), the British explorer and naturalist who collected extensively in West and Central Africa in the 1890s and whose zoological specimens — including fishes — were passed to the Natural History Museum in London and described by Günther and others. The genus name Ctenopoma derives from the Greek kteis (comb) and poma (lid or cover), referring to the serrated or spiny opercular margin characteristic of many members of the group.
Morphology
Ctenopoma kingsleyae is one of the largest species in its genus. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 7 in, while Seriously Fish and Aquarium Glaser report wild individuals to around 8–10 in, with aquarium specimens typically reaching 8 in. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, the profile somewhat arched, and the caudal fin rounded — the overall silhouette broadly reminiscent of a large perch.
Colouration is cryptic: a brownish to olive-grey base with faint darker mottling and banding that disrupts the outline against leaf litter and root tangles. The most diagnostic marking is a dark, well-defined spot at the base of the caudal fin — the 'tailspot' of the common name — which is present in juveniles and persists into adulthood. Sexual dimorphism is subtle but reliable: males develop fields of small spines or ctenii behind the eye and on the caudal peduncle, which are absent or reduced in females. These spiny patches, visible to the touch and under close inspection, are the most practical way to sex the species.
Habitat
The species ranges across coastal-rainforest river systems of northwestern and west-central Africa, from Senegal in the west to the lower reaches of the Congo drainage in the east, including the Niger delta region, Cameroon, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo. Aquarium Glaser notes a particular association with the wooded lowland streams of the lower Niger region, though the distributional record extends well beyond it.
In the wild, Ctenopoma kingsleyae occupies the slower margins of rivers, forest streams, backwaters, and flooded areas — habitats with abundant cover in the form of submerged wood, leaf litter, and marginal vegetation. As a labyrinth fish it can supplement gill respiration with atmospheric air drawn through the suprabranchial organ, allowing it to persist in warm, seasonally oxygen-depleted environments that exclude many other species. Water chemistry across its range is broadly soft to moderately hard and near-neutral, though FishBase records tolerance from pH 6.0 to 8.0 across its many river systems.
Feeding
Ctenopoma kingsleyae is a dedicated carnivore. In the wild it feeds on invertebrates, smaller fishes, frogs, and large aquatic insects — the ambush-hunter guild typical of the genus. It is not an active pursuit predator but rather a patient stalker that uses its cryptic colouration to approach prey before striking at close range.
In the aquarium, Seriously Fish reports that dried foods are commonly refused; the species does best on meaty whole or chunked foods — raw prawns, mussels, earthworms, large crickets, and similar items. Frozen fish flesh and whole lancefish are accepted by most individuals. Juveniles can be weaned onto large pellets or frozen bloodworm more readily than adults, so acquiring young fish and training them early is the recommended strategy. Feed sparingly: a large specimen requires only two or three substantial meals per week, and overfeeding leads quickly to fouled water.
Mating
Like other members of the genus Ctenopoma, C. kingsleyae is an open-water egg-scatterer. Spawning follows the typical anabantoid embrace in which the male wraps his body around the female and the pair release eggs and milt simultaneously; Seriously Fish records that this occurs at night. The eggs are buoyant and float to the surface, where they rest among surface vegetation or floating debris rather than being gathered into a bubble nest.
Males develop their spiny ctenii prior to breeding and may use them in male-to-male interactions, though C. kingsleyae is generally regarded as a calmer species than some of its congeners. Conditioning with high-protein live and frozen foods encourages spawning, and a gradual temperature rise of one or two degrees Celsius can serve as a trigger.
Breeding
Reports of aquarium breeding are relatively uncommon in the hobby literature, reflecting the species' rarity in trade compared with more frequently kept bushfishes such as C. acutirostre. The eggs are buoyant and pelagic, drifting at the surface; because there is no bubble nest and no parental care of any kind, Seriously Fish advises removing the adults promptly after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs and emerging fry.
Incubation is relatively brief at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days. The larvae are tiny and require very small first foods such as infusoria, rotifers, or commercial fry preparations before graduating to larger live foods. Rearing is challenging primarily because of the size mismatch between the tiny fry and the predatory instincts of any adults that remain in the tank; dedicated rearing in a separate vessel is the standard approach.
In the aquarium
Ctenopoma kingsleyae has been kept in European aquariums since at least 1912, when Aquarium Glaser records its first importation to Germany, yet it has never achieved mainstream hobby status. Its size — easily 8 in in a well-fed adult — demands a spacious tank of at least 59–71 in in length, and its dietary preference for whole meaty foods puts off aquarists accustomed to pellet-fed fish. Those willing to meet its needs, however, find it a rewarding and long-lived display animal.
The species is best kept as the sole large predator in a species-appropriate or biotope tank, with tankmates sized too large to be eaten — robust, deep-bodied cichlids, large catfishes, or other sizable West African species are suitable. Water temperature of 72–82 °F and pH between 6.0 and 8.0 covers its natural range; the fish is not demanding about chemistry. Subdued lighting and a heavily decorated tank with driftwood, roots, and leaf litter brings out natural behaviour and reduces stress. Despite early aquarium reports of aggression, Aquarium Glaser characterises the species as calm and peaceful once settled — the impression of aggression likely stemming from its size and predatory feeding response rather than territorial hostility toward non-prey tankmates.
Conservation
Ctenopoma kingsleyae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its broad distribution across multiple river systems in western and central Africa and its apparent tolerance of a wide range of freshwater habitats. Unlike many specialist or narrowly endemic members of the genus, it does not depend on a single drainage or a particularly fragile habitat type, and no acute population-level threats have been formally identified.
The species is not listed under CITES. Localised pressures — habitat degradation through forest clearance, river pollution in the Niger delta region, and limited subsistence fishery take — exist across parts of its range but have not been sufficient to shift its overall threat category. Its wide natural distribution is its primary conservation buffer, and hobbyist-bred stock has been available intermittently in Europe since the early twentieth century, reducing dependence on wild collection for the small aquarium trade that exists.
