Microctenopoma milleri is a small, rarely encountered African bushfish known only from tributary waters of the lower Congo River near Lukala, roughly 109 mi southwest of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Reaching about 2 in standard length, it is one of the smallest members of a genus of bubble-nesting labyrinth fishes that occupy rivers, swamps, and vegetated lake margins across the Congo basin. Its distinctively mottled coloration and low fin-spine counts distinguish it from congeners, and the species has been assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, reflecting how little is known of its population and range.

Taxonomy & naming

Microctenopoma milleri was originally described as Ctenopoma milleri by Norris and Douglas in 1991, in a paper published in Copeia (vol. 1991, no. 1, p. 168). The type locality is an unspecified tributary of the lower Congo River at or near Lukala, about 109 mi southwest of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. The holotype is deposited at the Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale as MRAC 174725, with paratypes MRAC 174726–28. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) treats the species as valid under its current combination, Microctenopoma milleri (Norris & Douglas, 1991), following the transfer to Microctenopoma by Norris in 1995.

The genus Microctenopoma was erected by Norris in 1995 to separate the smaller, bubble-nesting Congo-basin ctenopomas from the larger, mouthbrooding members of Ctenopoma sensu stricto. Microctenopoma currently includes around ten species — among them M. congicum, M. damasi, M. fasciolatum, M. nanum, M. nigricans, and M. ocellifer — all placed in the family Anabantidae. The diagnosis of M. milleri rests on its low dorsal-fin spine count (XIV) and low anal-fin spine count (VI–VII), which fall at the weak end of the range for the genus, together with its distinctive mottled body pattern.

Morphology

Microctenopoma milleri is a small, compact labyrinth fish reaching approximately 2 in standard length in males and unsexed specimens. Like other members of the genus it has the characteristic anabantid body form: moderately deep, laterally compressed, with rounded fins and a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding and bubble-nest construction.

The most distinctive feature is the mottled color pattern — an irregular mosaic of dark and pale markings over the body and fins — which sets it apart from congeners that tend toward a more uniform or barred appearance. The low fin-spine counts (dorsal XIV, anal VI–VII) are diagnostic within Microctenopoma. As with other anabantids, M. milleri possesses a suprabranchial labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air, an adaptation to the warm, periodically oxygen-depleted waters of the Congo basin.

Habitat

The species is known only from the type locality: tributary waters of the lower Congo River in the vicinity of Lukala, Democratic Republic of Congo. This region forms part of the vast Congo River drainage, a basin characterised by warm, low-conductivity waters that range from clear to blackwater, with surrounding forest and dense riparian and aquatic vegetation.

Congeneric species in the lower and central Congo basin — including M. congicum — occupy water temperatures of roughly 73–81 °F and neutral to slightly acidic conditions (pH approximately 6.8–7.8). M. milleri most likely inhabits similar slow-moving or standing waters among aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, and leaf litter, as is typical of Microctenopoma throughout the basin. As a labyrinth fish, it requires access to the water surface to breathe air, and it is adapted to conditions where dissolved oxygen may be seasonally low.

Feeding

Microctenopoma milleri is presumed to be a carnivore like its congeners, hunting small invertebrates in the water column and at the surface. Members of Microctenopoma are ambush predators equipped with a highly protrusible jaw, capable of striking at prey from a stationary position in cover — a foraging mode well suited to the vegetated, often dimly lit habitats of the lower Congo.

Natural prey likely includes small aquatic insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, and other invertebrates accessible at the surface or in the water column. In aquarium settings, congeners such as M. ansorgii accept small live and frozen foods readily — brine shrimp, Daphnia, bloodworm, and small chironomid larvae — and are rarely interested in dried prepared foods. Similar preferences can be expected for M. milleri, given its small size and the feeding habits shared across the genus.

Mating

Microctenopoma milleri is a bubble-nester. Male Microctenopoma build a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles at the water surface, typically among floating plants or beneath a leaf. The nest anchors the eggs after spawning and is actively tended by the male throughout incubation. Courtship involves the male displaying to the female with fin erection and lateral posturing before guiding her beneath the bubble nest for egg release.

Within Microctenopoma the bubblenests vary in size and robustness between species; some males build substantial rafts while others produce only a sparse scattering of bubbles. The eggs are released in small batches and float up into the nest. Males defend the nest site and chase away the female and other fish after spawning is complete.

Breeding

As a bubble-nester, M. milleri follows the reproductive pattern documented for its congeners: eggs are spawned in batches, float into the bubblenest, and hatch in approximately 24 hours at typical tropical temperatures. The male tends the nest, retrieving and reinserting any eggs or larvae that fall. Larvae become free-swimming within a few days of hatching, at which point the male's parental role diminishes.

No specific breeding data have been published for M. milleri itself, and the species is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby. Guidance from M. ansorgii, a close Congo-basin congener, suggests that a well-covered aquarium with floating plants, soft acidic water, and small live foods offers the best chance of spawning. Fry are very small at first and require infusoria or rotifers before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Peat filtration and tannin-stained water can aid conditioning and spawning success.

In the aquarium

Microctenopoma milleri is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade. Its extreme rarity in the hobby reflects both the obscurity of the type locality and the fact that the lower Congo River has historically been difficult to access for ornamental fish collection. Any specimens that do appear would likely be obtained through specialist importers or as by-catch in Congo basin fish shipments.

Where kept, husbandry should follow that used for other small Microctenopoma: a densely planted tank of 15 US gal or more, with floating plants to support bubble-nest construction, a tight-fitting lid (the species is an escape artist, as are all anabantids), and slow or gentle filtration to avoid disrupting surface films. Water in the 73–81 °F range with a neutral to slightly acidic pH suits the lower Congo environment. The species is a predator and should be housed with similarly sized or larger peaceful fish; very small tankmates such as nano tetras may be taken. Live and frozen foods are essential to maintain condition. A covered tank with surface access is non-negotiable — the labyrinth organ requires the fish to breathe atmospheric air at the surface.

Conservation

Microctenopoma milleri is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 16 February 2009. The Data Deficient designation reflects the near-total absence of population surveys, range data, and ecological information for this species — not a finding that populations are secure. The known range is a single type locality in the lower Congo basin near Lukala, and it is unknown whether the species occurs more widely in adjacent tributaries or whether its populations have changed since the original collection in the late 1980s.

The lower Congo River is one of the most biodiverse freshwater systems on Earth and is under increasing pressure from artisanal and industrial fisheries, agricultural runoff, and land-use change around Kinshasa. Whether M. milleri faces specific threats is unknown. A targeted survey of the Lukala tributaries and adjacent lower Congo waters would be the logical first step toward establishing whether the species warrants a more specific threat category.
