Taxonomy & naming
Microctenopoma fasciolatum was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899, making it one of the earlier members of the genus to receive formal treatment. The parenthetical authority reflects a subsequent generic rearrangement: the species was originally placed in a broader genus and later moved to Microctenopoma. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid combination as Microctenopoma fasciolatum (Boulenger, 1899).
The genus Microctenopoma was separated from the larger Ctenopoma on the basis of scale morphology and reproductive characters — members of Microctenopoma are bubble-nest builders, whereas the more speciose Ctenopoma typically spawn without nest construction. Microctenopoma currently contains around a dozen recognised species, most of them confined to the Congo basin. M. fasciolatum is among the more widespread and better-studied members of the group.
The specific epithet fasciolatum derives from the Latin fascia, meaning 'band' or 'stripe', and the diminutive suffix — effectively 'banded' or 'little-banded'. The allusion is to the series of vertical bars that cross the body from head to tail, a pattern shared to varying degrees with other Microctenopoma but most consistently expressed in this species.
Morphology
Microctenopoma fasciolatum is a moderately elongate, slightly laterally compressed fish reaching around 3 in total length. The body profile is broadly oval with a rounded head, moderately large eyes, and a relatively small, upturned mouth well suited to taking prey from near the surface or within the water column. The ctenoid (spiny-edged) scales that characterise the family are present, giving the flanks a slightly rough texture — the name Ctenopoma reflects this trait.
The banding pattern is the species' most recognisable feature: a series of roughly vertical, alternating pale and dark bars runs from behind the head to the base of the caudal peduncle, varying from clearly defined to somewhat mottled depending on the individual's mood and background. A dark bar through or behind the eye is often present. Base colouration tends towards olive-brown to tan, and the fins are typically clear to faintly pigmented. Condition, stress, and the presence of rivals or potential prey all shift the intensity of the pattern; a bold, well-fed male in a darkened tank is far more striking than the same fish under bright lighting in an exposed setting.
Habitat
Microctenopoma fasciolatum is a Congo basin endemic, recorded from the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and tributaries in Cameroon. It occupies freshwater habitats across this range, favouring slow-moving or still bodies of water with dense emergent and submerged vegetation, including backwaters, flooded margins, marshes, and smaller tributaries. This preference for sheltered, heavily planted environments is typical of the genus.
Reported water parameters for the species span a moderate range: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and hardness roughly 4–20 dH. These figures indicate a species tolerant of both slightly soft, acidic and near-neutral, moderately hard water — a useful ecological breadth that reflects the variability of habitats across the broad Congo drainage. Like all labyrinth fishes, M. fasciolatum breathes air using the suprabranchial labyrinth organ, which allows it to extract oxygen directly from the atmosphere. This adaptation makes it well suited to the warm, sometimes oxygen-depleted conditions of slow-moving, vegetation-choked waters, and it is a regular visitor to the surface.
Feeding
Microctenopoma fasciolatum is a carnivore in the wild, targeting small invertebrates including insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other appropriately sized prey items encountered among vegetation and near the substrate. Its upturned mouth and ambush-oriented hunting style — sitting motionless among plant stems before striking — are adaptations to this diet.
In the aquarium the species can be reluctant to accept prepared dry foods and shows a strong preference for live and frozen prey. Small live foods such as Daphnia, mosquito larvae, micro-worms, and artemia are well received; frozen equivalents (bloodworm, brine shrimp) are often taken once the fish has settled. Patience is required with newly acquired specimens — many will refuse dried food for weeks before gradually accepting it if live and frozen alternatives are withheld. Feeding small amounts frequently, with variety, gives the best results and maintains the fish's natural condition.
Mating
Microctenopoma fasciolatum is a bubble-nest builder: prior to and during spawning the male constructs a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles at the water surface, typically anchored among floating vegetation or beneath a broad leaf. Courtship involves the male displaying to the female with spread fins and intensified barring, circling and nudging her toward the nest site. The characteristic labyrinth-fish embrace follows, in which the male wraps his body around the female as the pair roll onto their sides or inverted positions beneath the nest to release eggs and milt simultaneously.
The male is the active partner in both nest construction and territory maintenance. As with other bubble-nest-building anabantoids, males can be aggressive toward one another during the spawning period, and in a small tank a dominant male may harass a ripe female relentlessly once she is no longer receptive. Providing dense cover and visual barriers allows the female to retreat and reduces the risk of injury.
Breeding
After spawning, fertilised eggs float up and are collected by the male and placed in the bubble nest, where they remain suspended until hatching. The male maintains the nest actively, replacing damaged bubbles and retrieving any eggs or fry that fall. Incubation typically lasts 24–48 hours at breeding temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, and the yolk-sac fry remain in or near the nest for a further day or two before becoming free-swimming.
Once the fry are free-swimming the female should be removed, and the male can generally be left in place until the fry are large enough to be self-sufficient — though in some individuals the male's protective drive wanes and he may begin to eat the fry. First foods should be very small: infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food are appropriate for the first week or two, transitioning to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Water quality is critical in the fry-rearing container; gentle water changes are essential, but avoid surface disturbance that might break the nest while eggs or early fry are present.
In the aquarium
Microctenopoma fasciolatum is a rewarding species for the patient aquarist willing to meet its preferences. It is less reclusive than the closely related M. ansorgei and will eventually become reasonably confident in a well-planted tank, though newly acquired specimens tend to hide for the first few weeks. A species-only tank or a community of small, non-boisterous fishes works best; active or fin-nipping tankmates stress the fish and can prevent it from settling.
The tank should be heavily planted, with floating plants to break up surface light and provide anchoring points for the bubble nest, and dimly lit to bring out the banded pattern. Gentle filtration — a sponge filter is ideal — maintains water quality without the strong current that would disrupt nest building and tire the fish. Surface access must be unobstructed, since the labyrinth organ requires regular gulps of atmospheric air; a tight-fitting lid with a small gap for air exchange keeps the air above the water warm and prevents the fish from injuring itself jumping. Water parameters of pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 75–82 °F, and moderate hardness are appropriate and easy to maintain in most tap-water supplies with some adjustment.
Because the species prefers live and frozen foods, budget accordingly; a diet centred on dry food alone produces a dull, underweight fish. Given good conditions, a lifespan of four to six years is achievable.
Conservation
Microctenopoma fasciolatum is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent evaluation completed in 2025. The assessment notes no major threats currently affecting the species across its Congo basin range, and the widespread distribution across the Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Cameroon gives it a relatively secure footing compared to more narrowly endemic relatives.
The broad Congo drainage encompasses a very large area of Central African forest and woodland, much of it still structurally intact, and slow-moving, vegetated freshwater habitats of the sort M. fasciolatum occupies remain common throughout the region. While localised impacts from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and artisanal collection for the ornamental trade occur across the Congo basin, none rises to the level of a range-wide threat for this species at present. Ongoing monitoring is warranted as pressures on Central African freshwater systems increase, but the species does not currently require targeted conservation intervention.
