Taxonomy & naming
Pseudosphromenus cupanus was first described by Georges Cuvier in 1831, making it one of the earlier-documented anabantoids from the Indian subcontinent; the parenthetical authority reflects its movement out of the genus in which Cuvier originally placed it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Pseudosphromenus cupanus (Cuvier, 1831). The type locality is given variously as the Arian-Coupang (Ariankuppam) River near Pondicherry (now Puducherry) on the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu, though the Sankaraparani and Gingee river drainages of the same region are also cited in the literature.
The genus Pseudosphromenus contains two species — P. cupanus and P. dayi — both small, secretive bubble-nesting paradise fishes from South Asia. They were historically shuffled between Macropodus and Polyacanthus before settling in Pseudosphromenus, which is placed in the family Osphronemidae alongside the true gouramis and the other paradise fishes. The specific epithet cupanus derives from Coupang, an archaic rendering of the type-locality river name.
Morphology
The spiketail paradisefish is a slender, moderately laterally compressed fish reaching around 2.5 in in standard length in most aquarium references, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 3 in. The common name refers to the extended central rays of the caudal fin, which elongate into a pointed spike in adults — more pronounced in males, whose trailing filament can be striking against still water.
Base colouration is a warm brown to olive-grey on the flanks, patterned with a series of dark horizontal stripes or spots that provide camouflage among leaf litter and vegetation. Nuptial males undergo a dramatic shift: the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins flush fluorescent sky-blue, and dark pigment intensifies on the body. Females darken conspicuously during courtship, turning a deep coal-black that contrasts with the male's iridescence. Outside of breeding condition, resting males are described variously as pale ash-grey; the chromatic range of this species is considerably broader than its plain daytime appearance suggests.
Habitat
Pseudosphromenus cupanus is a species of the southern Indian lowlands and Sri Lanka, with its core range in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and confirmed records from Sri Lanka. Reports of its occurrence in Myanmar, Malaysia, and Indonesia appear in older aggregators but are treated with caution by more recent authorities; Seriously Fish considers the species restricted to southern India and Sri Lanka.
This paradisefish is found in slow-moving and stagnant waters: rice paddies, weedy swamps, vegetated pond margins, floodplain shallows, and the sluggish fringes of coastal river systems, including brackish-marginal habitats. Aquarium Glaser references peat-swamp and blackwater environments in Kerala. Water conditions recorded by Seriously Fish span 68–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, with hardness ranging widely (36–447 ppm), reflecting the range of habitats the species exploits across rice-farming and forest-edge landscapes. FishBase notes tolerance of both freshwater and brackish conditions, consistent with its coastal-lowland range. As a labyrinth fish, it breathes atmospheric air at the surface and inhabits waters that can be hypoxic — the suprabranchial organ is not a luxury here but a functional necessity.
Feeding
In the wild, Pseudosphromenus cupanus feeds on small invertebrates associated with the surface and the substrate: mosquito larvae, Daphnia, small insects, tubifex, and similar live prey. Chandran et al. (2013) found the species responded well to natural feeds including mosquito larvae, earthworm, and tubifex in experimental breeding trials, and noted these feeds supported higher egg production compared to artificial diets.
In the aquarium the spiketail paradisefish is not a demanding feeder. It accepts live and frozen invertebrates — brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii and adults), Daphnia, bloodworm, and small insects — and will take small, high-protein prepared foods. Its mouth is small; food particle size should be matched accordingly. A diet with a regular live or frozen component is recommended for conditioning prior to breeding and for maintaining the vibrancy of the male's nuptial colouration.
Mating
Pseudosphromenus cupanus is a bubble-nesting labyrinth fish. Spawning is preceded by an elaborate courtship sequence that begins with the male circling the female and intensifying his colour display. The fins shift to fluorescent sky-blue, the body darkens, and the male orients toward the female with fins spread. The female's darkening to near-black is a recognised visual signal of receptivity. Courtship culminates in the anabantoid embrace: the male wraps around the female, stimulating the simultaneous release of eggs and sperm.
Chandran et al. (2013), observing paired fish in a 60 × 30 × 12 in aquarium at 79–82 °F and pH approximately 7, documented the sequence in detail. The male initiates nest-building before or during early courtship; egg extrusion occurs in batches during successive embraces, and both sexes participate in collecting and placing eggs into the nest. The study recorded an average of 438 eggs per spawning event (range 418–449), which is notably productive for a fish of this size.
Breeding
The male builds a bubble nest at the water surface, cementing air bubbles with mucus and anchoring the raft to floating aquatic plants — Pistia, Salvinia, and Lemna are the substrates documented by Chandran et al. (2013) in the field and laboratory. Nest diameter in laboratory conditions averaged 2.5–4 in, with field reports of nests up to 5 in across. In the aquarium, the male will also construct nests in enclosed spaces: beneath large floating leaves, the underside of broad-leaved plants, or under artificial shelters such as coconut shells or clay pots placed at the surface — the species prefers some overhead cover rather than an open-water site.
After the eggs are placed in the nest the male assumes primary guarding duty, retrieving fallen eggs and defending the nest from intruders. The female may assist with brood care, though Aquarium Glaser notes she sometimes assumes sole care if the male loses interest. Eggs hatch in approximately 32 hours at 79–82 °F; Chandran et al. recorded an 80% hatch rate under experimental conditions. Fry are free-swimming within 2–3 days of hatching. Water temperature should be kept warm throughout the breeding period, and surface turbulence should be minimal to avoid destroying the bubble nest.
In the aquarium
The spiketail paradisefish is considered a peaceful and undemanding species suited to a well-planted smaller aquarium. A tank of around 23.5 in in length with dense planting and floating surface cover — Java fern, Ceratophyllum, Salvinia, or similar — replicates its natural habitat and gives the secretive male shelter to build his nest. Low to moderate flow is preferable; this is a fish of still and sluggish water, and strong surface movement destroys bubble nests and stresses the animals.
Aquarium Glaser describes water chemistry requirements as relaxed, noting that ordinary drinking water (implying a relatively wide pH and hardness tolerance) suits the species — consistent with the wide hardness range documented across its natural range by Seriously Fish. Temperature should be kept in the 72–82 °F range, with the warmer end favoured during breeding. The spiketail is best kept as a pair or small group with suitable dither fish; it is shy and may be outcompeted in a busy community tank. Tankmates should be peaceful and similarly sized — small, non-aggressive tetras or rasboras are common companions. The labyrinth organ requires unobstructed access to humid air above the waterline; a lid that maintains surface warmth is important, particularly in cooler rooms.
Conservation
Pseudosphromenus cupanus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with a stable population trend. The species' tolerance of a broad range of degraded and human-modified habitats — rice paddies, stagnant ponds, agricultural drains — means it persists across much of its range even where natural vegetation has been reduced. Encyclopedia of Life records confirmed distribution in India and Sri Lanka; the species' association with rice-farming landscapes gives it an unusually wide footprint for a small anabantoid.
While the LC assessment reflects current stability, the species is naturally restricted to southern India and Sri Lanka, and pressures including wetland drainage, pesticide use in rice cultivation, and freshwater habitat degradation are ongoing in parts of that range. Collection for the ornamental trade has historically been a factor, though captive breeding is well established and tank-bred stock is commercially available, reducing demand on wild populations. No specific conservation programmes are known for P. cupanus; its continued presence in working agricultural landscapes is its principal buffer against decline.
