Taxonomy & naming
Pseudosphromenus dayi was originally described by Köhler in 1908 as Polyacanthus cupanus dayi. The type locality was listed by Engmann (1909) as 'Malakka' (Malacca, Malay Peninsula), but this is widely regarded as an error; all reliable records place the species firmly in the Western Ghats of Kerala, southern India, where it remains endemic. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the current valid name as Pseudosphromenus dayi (Köhler, 1908), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original placement in a different genus. Synonyms include Macropodus dayi, recorded in the earlier aquarium literature.
The genus Pseudosphromenus belongs to the family Osphronemidae (the gourami family) within the order Anabantiformes. It contains only two species: P. dayi from southern India and P. cupanus, the more widespread Spiketail Paradisefish, whose range extends across coastal lowlands of India and Sri Lanka. The two are superficially similar but differ in fin shape, colouration, and ecology. P. dayi was long confused with P. cupanus in the aquarium hobby, and some older aquarium accounts conflate their natural histories.
Morphology
Pseudosphromenus dayi is a small, slender labyrinth fish reaching around 2.5–3 in total length, with most wild and captive specimens in the 2–2.5 in range. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with pointed caudal fin extensions — the 'spiketail' of the group's common name — that are best developed in males. The dorsal and anal fins are long-based and low, giving the fish a streamlined, almost pencil-like silhouette among vegetation.
Base colouration is a warm golden-brown to olive, overlaid with rows of iridescent blue-green scales that glimmer under angled light. The fins carry dark margins and, in breeding males, a reddish flush. The species is not the most vivid of the gourami group, but it rewards close observation: the interplay of the iridescent rows against the brown ground, and the subtle brightening of a conditioned male, constitute a understated beauty well suited to a dimly lit blackwater aquascape.
Sexual dimorphism is moderate. Males develop the more pronounced caudal fin extensions and show brighter colour when in condition. Females are rounder-bodied, especially when gravid, and their colouration tends to be more muted. Outside the breeding season the sexes can be difficult to tell apart.
Habitat
In the wild, Pseudosphromenus dayi inhabits the sluggish, densely vegetated margins of rice paddies, swamps, weedy ponds, and floodplain pools in the Western Ghats foothills and coastal lowlands of Kerala, southern India. These are warm, still or very slow-moving waters with heavy plant cover and a soft, organic substrate — typical peatland-influenced habitats where oxygen levels at depth can be low, making the labyrinth organ critical for survival.
Water chemistry in this zone tends toward soft and slightly acidic to neutral, reflecting the weathered laterite and organic-rich soils of the Western Ghats coast. Seriously Fish records pH around 6.75 and water hardness around 100 ppm (soft), with temperatures typical of the Indian tropics. FishBase notes lentic (still-water) environments and rice-paddy associations. The species is closely tied to the presence of dense submerged and emergent vegetation, which provides cover, spawning sites, and invertebrate prey.
Feeding
Pseudosphromenus dayi is an invertivore in the wild, targeting the small animals that colonise dense aquatic vegetation: insect larvae, small crustaceans such as Daphnia, and other microinvertebrates. A recent ecological study on diet and niche overlap in a coastal wetland in India confirmed these feeding preferences in wild populations, and also noted that the species faces competition from the introduced Three-spot Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus), which overlaps its food niche.
In the aquarium the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), white worms, grindal worms, small insects such as Drosophila, and cricket pieces. As with most small labyrinth fish, live and frozen foods condition adults far more effectively than dry foods alone, and frequent small feedings suit a fish that forages continuously through dense cover. The relatively small mouth constrains prey size — food items should be appropriately tiny.
Mating
Pseudosphromenus dayi is a bubble-nesting labyrinth fish, and the male's courtship and nest-building behaviour is the defining feature of its reproductive biology. In a mature aquarium with suitable cover, males will select a sheltered site — typically against an overhanging leaf, under a piece of driftwood, or at the entrance to a cavity — and construct a small raft of mucus-bound bubbles, often incorporating plant debris for structural support. This secretive approach to nest placement distinguishes P. dayi from the open-surface nesters of some other gouramis; the male actively seeks concealment.
Courtship involves the male displaying to the female with spread fins and heightened colour, circling her and herding her toward the nest. A receptive female allows the male to approach; the pair perform spawning embraces beneath or at the nest, during which small batches of eggs are released and fertilised. The eggs are buoyant and float up into the bubble mass, where the male catches and positions any that stray. Spawning proceeds in short bouts, with rests between, until the female's supply of eggs is spent.
Breeding
Following the spawning embraces, the male takes sole charge of the nest and the developing eggs, fanning them, replacing damaged bubbles, and aggressively driving away the female and any other intruders. Hobbyists who attempt to breed the species in a community aquarium usually find this guardianship collapses under persistent disturbance; a dedicated breeding tank gives far better results. A small aquarium of 10–15 US gal, heavily planted with broad-leaved or floating plants to provide hiding spots and reduce surface turbulence, is the standard recommendation.
Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.5–7.0, low hardness) and temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius suit breeding attempts; Seriously Fish records successful spawning around 75 °F. Eggs hatch within a few days, and the male continues to guard the fry cloud at the nest surface through the yolk-sac stage. Once the fry are free-swimming, the male may be removed to protect them. The tiny fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. Rearing is rewarding but demands attentiveness to water quality in the small fry tank.
In the aquarium
Pseudosphromenus dayi is an ideal subject for a small, dedicated species or species-community aquarium rather than a busy community tank. A 10–15 US gal tank with a tight-fitting lid (essential for all labyrinth fish — warm, humid air above the waterline protects the developing suprabranchial organ in fry and prevents chilling in adults), soft low-flow filtration, and dense planting suits it perfectly. Floating plants such as frogbit or water lettuce help diffuse light and provide surface cover the fish finds reassuring.
The species is gentle and easily outcompeted by boisterous or large tankmates. Best companions are small, equally quiet fish — diminutive rasboras, otocinclus, small loaches, or other softwater labyrinth fish of similar size. A group of four to six individuals, or a breeding pair, forms the natural social unit; males may display to one another but serious aggression is unusual in a well-planted tank. Because it is a secretive fish, heavy cover and some natural behaviour of foraging and resting among stems is only visible when the aquarist does not constantly disturb the tank.
Like all labyrinth fish, P. dayi must be able to breathe atmospheric air at the surface; the surface should never be sealed off by equipment or a film of floating organic matter. Gentle sponge or hang-on filtration is preferable to power filters that create strong surface agitation. Water should be kept soft and slightly acidic, mirroring the peatland habitats of the Western Ghats.
Conservation
Pseudosphromenus dayi is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (Dahanukar & Devi 2020, assessment amended 2020), under criterion B1ab(iii): restricted range (the species is endemic to the Western Ghats) combined with continuing decline in habitat area and quality. The Western Ghats peatland wetlands, rice paddies, and coastal swamps that the species depends on are among the most intensively modified landscapes in southern India, subject to drainage, conversion to agriculture and settlement, and agrochemical runoff that degrades water quality.
A recent ecological study documented an additional threat: competition and potential displacement by the introduced Three-spot Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus) in at least some parts of the native range, adding a biological pressure to the habitat-loss driver. With a range confined to a single biodiversity hotspot region under ongoing human pressure, the species has little resilience to further decline. In the aquarium hobby, captive stocks exist and the species breeds readily in appropriate conditions; maintaining a captive culture is a meaningful contribution to the long-term security of the species, and wild-caught imports should be avoided in favour of tank-bred stock wherever possible.
