Taxonomy & naming
Sphaerichthys osphromenoides was described by the Italian zoologist Giovanni Canestrini in 1860, making it the founding species of the genus Sphaerichthys and the original "chocolate gourami" of the scientific literature. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Sphaerichthys osphromenoides Canestrini, 1860. The genus Sphaerichthys belongs to the family Osphronemidae, the gourami family, and sits within the broader anabantoid radiation of labyrinth fishes.
Four species are currently placed in Sphaerichthys — S. osphromenoides, S. selatanensis, S. acrostoma, and S. vaillanti — and the genus is collectively known as the chocolate gouramis on account of their shared colour theme. S. osphromenoides is the most widely distributed and by far the most commonly kept of the four. Hobbyist and scientific observers have noted that populations from Sumatra and Borneo differ in fin colouration (some with red unpaired fins, others with white or cream) and in body proportions enough that they may represent distinct evolutionary lineages, though no formal split has yet been published based on the available evidence.
Morphology
Sphaerichthys osphromenoides is a compact, laterally compressed fish reaching around 2.5 in total length, with males typically slightly larger and noticeably more colourful than females. The body is deep and almost oval in profile, with a small, slightly upturned mouth suited to surface feeding. Like all members of the family Osphronemidae, it possesses the labyrinth organ — a highly vascularised accessory breathing structure in the suprabranchial chamber that allows it to breathe atmospheric air, a critical adaptation for the warm, oxygen-depleted blackwater environments it inhabits.
The base colouration is a warm dark brown, overlaid with three to five transverse bars of pale cream, white, or yellow that extend from the dorsal surface down the sides, giving the fish a banded appearance reminiscent of a bar of dark chocolate. The unpaired fins vary by population: fish from some Sumatran localities carry red-tinged dorsal, caudal, and anal fins, while those from Borneo and certain other populations show white or cream fin margins. Males are brighter overall, with more saturated brown tones and crisper markings; females are paler and somewhat plumper through the belly, a difference most apparent when a female is carrying eggs.
Habitat
Sphaerichthys osphromenoides is a peat-swamp and blackwater specialist, native to lowland freshwater systems across the Malay Peninsula (including Peninsular Malaysia and historically Singapore), the Indonesian island of Sumatra, and Borneo. It inhabits slow-moving to nearly still waters — peat-swamp forest streams, forest pools, and the quieter margins of blackwater rivers — where the water is heavily stained with tannins and humic acids leached from decomposing plant matter.
The chemistry of these habitats is extreme by the standards of most aquarium fish. Wild sites regularly measure pH values below 4.5, with conductivity approaching zero and hardness below 1°dGH. The dark, tea-coloured water absorbs and scatters light, leaving the understory dimly lit. Temperatures in the peat-swamp zone run warm, typically in the range of 75–82 °F, though fluctuations occur. The species is a labyrinth fish, able to breathe air at the surface, which allows it to thrive in the very low dissolved-oxygen conditions that characterise stagnant peat-swamp water. It favours areas with dense emergent and floating vegetation, submerged roots, and leaf litter.
Feeding
In the wild Sphaerichthys osphromenoides feeds primarily on small invertebrates — zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other tiny prey items — picked from the water column and from the surface film. It is not a plant-eater but an insectivore-omnivore relying on live, moving prey to trigger a feeding response.
In the aquarium this dependence on live food presents the most significant practical challenge the species poses. Many chocolate gouramis refuse prepared or frozen foods entirely, and individuals that have been in captivity for some time may eventually accept frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, or white mosquito larvae, but live food remains the most reliable option. Newly imported or stressed fish in particular will often eat nothing but live Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, white worms, blackworms, or small bloodworms. Building a stable colony of Daphnia and a regular supply of baby brine shrimp is the most effective way to keep a group in good condition long-term.
Mating
Sphaerichthys osphromenoides is a maternal mouthbrooder: after fertilisation the female takes the eggs into her mouth and incubates them there for the full developmental period. This places it in a reproductive guild quite different from the bubble-nesting labyrinth fishes, and mating behaviour reflects that distinction.
Spawning is preceded by an extended courtship in which the pair circle each other, often for several hours. The male displays to the female with spread fins and heightened colour, and the pair may make contact repeatedly before the female is ready to spawn. Egg release is gradual rather than explosive — the female expels small numbers of eggs, the male fertilises them, and the female then collects them into her buccal cavity. The process may be repeated across multiple passes until the female has taken up a full clutch. Once she is carrying, courtship ceases and the female typically retreats to shelter, adopting a characteristic posture with a visibly distended throat and a subdued, faded colouration.
Breeding
The female chocolate gourami incubates her clutch for approximately 17 to 19 days, though the documented range extends from about 12 to 21 days depending on temperature and individual variation. During this period she eats little or nothing and should be disturbed as little as possible; moving or netting a brooding female almost invariably causes her to spit the eggs, and attempts to artificially hatch the clutch once expelled have not proved successful. A typical clutch produces 50–60 fry at release, though many spawns yield closer to 30 surviving juveniles.
Breeding chocolate gouramis in captivity requires replicating the species' extreme natural water conditions as closely as possible. Soft, acidic water — pH below 6.5 and ideally in the 5.0–6.0 range, hardness below 2°dGH, and temperature around 77–81 °F — is the essential prerequisite; fish kept in harder or more alkaline water will rarely spawn and commonly succumb to bacterial infections. A species tank with dim lighting, dense floating plant cover, a layer of dried leaves on the substrate, and air-driven filtration providing very gentle flow creates the peat-swamp conditions that bring the fish into breeding condition. Fry are released as free-swimming juveniles and accept newly hatched brine shrimp and Daphnia nauplii immediately; they grow steadily and can reach over 0.5 in within about two months.
In the aquarium
Sphaerichthys osphromenoides is widely regarded as one of the more challenging labyrinth fishes to maintain successfully, and it is not a suitable choice for a community aquarium or for anyone unwilling to invest in water quality and live food. Its requirements are specific and largely non-negotiable: extremely soft, very acidic water; a steady supply of live invertebrate prey; low light; minimal water movement; and a quiet environment free of boisterous tankmates. Given those conditions, however, it is a rewarding and long-lived fish — often surviving five or more years — and its subtle colouration and unusual behaviour make it a centrepiece for a dedicated blackwater biotope.
A minimum tank of around 60 × 12 in is suitable for a small group of four to six fish; a breeding setup of similar dimensions can be dedicated to a pair. Filtration should be air-driven (sponge filter or Mattenfilter) to provide biological processing without significant current; labyrinth fish need access to warm, humid air immediately above the waterline, so a tight-fitting lid that traps a warm air layer is important. Décor should include driftwood, submerged roots, Indian almond leaves or other dried leaves, and surface-covering floating plants. Water changes of 30–40% weekly with appropriately conditioned soft, acidic water are standard practice, and pH and hardness should be checked regularly. Compatible tankmates for a species-appropriate display include small, peaceful rasboras such as Boraras brigittae, kuhli loaches, and Otocinclus; avoid any species that are boisterous, large, or likely to nip fins.
Conservation
The conservation status of Sphaerichthys osphromenoides has not been formally assessed and published by the IUCN Red List as an independent entry; FishBase records the species as Data Deficient (DD), reflecting the lack of comprehensive population survey data. That absence of a formal assessment does not mean the species is secure. Its peat-swamp forest habitat across Sumatra, Borneo, and the Malay Peninsula is among the most severely threatened freshwater biome in Southeast Asia, with large areas drained and cleared for oil palm and timber plantations over recent decades. The combination of specialised blackwater chemistry dependence and habitat specificity makes the genus highly vulnerable to any modification of the peat-swamp hydrological regime.
Historically, wild collection for the ornamental trade added pressure on accessible populations, though the growing availability of tank-bred fish has reduced commercial demand for wild-caught specimens. Aquarists who choose to breed the species play a small but real role in maintaining a captive population that is independent of wild collection. Given the pace of peat-swamp destruction across its range, a formal IUCN assessment of S. osphromenoides would be a valuable contribution to its management.
