Taxonomy & naming
Sphaerichthys vaillanti was described by the French zoologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1930, based on material from Borneo; the type locality is recorded as Nangah Sebroeang in the Kapuas river basin of West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Sphaerichthys vaillanti Pellegrin, 1930. The species belongs to the genus Sphaerichthys, the chocolate gouramis, which currently comprises four recognised species: the widespread Sphaerichthys osphromenoides (the type species), S. vaillanti, S. selatanensis, and S. acrostoma. All four are small Sundaic labyrinth fishes confined to peat swamps and blackwater drainages of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo.
The genus Sphaerichthys sits within the family Osphronemidae, the true gouramis, and within the suborder Anabantoidei — the labyrinth fishes. The genus name derives from the Greek sphaira (ball or sphere) and ichthys (fish), a reference to the rounded body shape shared by the group. The specific epithet vaillanti honours Prof. Léon Louis Vaillant (1834–1914), a prominent French ichthyologist and herpetologist at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris. The species is sometimes called the Samurai Gourami or Vaillant's Chocolate Gourami in the aquarium hobby.
Morphology
Sphaerichthys vaillanti is a small, laterally compressed fish reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length on FishBase data, with aquarium specimens commonly reported to 2 in. The body is deep and rounded — consistent with the genus name — with a small, upturned mouth, large eyes, and a short, rounded caudal fin. The overall impression is of a compact, almost oval fish.
Sexual dimorphism in this species is reversed relative to most labyrinth fishes, making coloration an unusually reliable guide to sex. Females in breeding condition display vivid red and green vertical bars along the body, most intense during spawning, with a greenish anterior grading into a richer reddish posterior. Males are the more cryptic sex: brownish overall with a pale or whitish lateral stripe running behind the eye to the base of the caudal fin, a dark stripe below, and a single vertical bar positioned between the dorsal and anal fins. This reversal — the non-brooding sex being the more conspicuous — aligns with the species' reproductive biology, in which it is the male who incubates the eggs and therefore benefits from concealment.
Both sexes are capable of remarkable camouflage among dead leaves and organic debris, and the species has been documented mimicking leaf litter on the substrate — an unusual anti-predator strategy for a labyrinth fish.
Habitat
Sphaerichthys vaillanti is native to the Kapuas River basin of West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, where it inhabits peat swamp forests, small blackwater creeks, and forest streams with abundant submerged roots, fallen wood, and leaf accumulations. The water in these habitats is characteristically tannin-stained and highly acidic: the type locality at Nangah Sebroeang had a measured pH of 5.3 and conductivity of approximately 20 µS/cm, and the species is reported across a pH range of 3.0–6.5, with humic blackwater conditions typical. Water temperatures across the range run from about 72–84 °F.
Like all labyrinth fishes, S. vaillanti possesses a suprabranchial labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air directly, enabling survival in the low-dissolved-oxygen conditions that characterise warm, stagnant peat swamp water. Despite this adaptation, the species is sensitive to water quality changes outside its narrow natural chemistry and is not a robust generalist. It has also been found in clearer water with submerged root tangles at the margins of streams, suggesting some microhabitat flexibility, but the core association is with soft, acidic, oxygen-poor blackwater environments. The fish are typically observed in pairs or small groups, resting and foraging among bottom debris.
Feeding
Sphaerichthys vaillanti is a micropredator in the wild, feeding on small live invertebrates including tiny crustaceans, worms, insect larvae, and zooplankton filtered from the water column or picked from the substrate and detritus layer. Its small upturned mouth limits it to correspondingly small prey items.
In the aquarium the species is notably picky, particularly when newly imported or when conditions are suboptimal. Wild-caught fish may initially refuse prepared foods entirely, and even established aquarium specimens often prefer live and frozen foods over dried alternatives. Small live or frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, and Cyclops — are consistently accepted and form the nutritional backbone of a captive diet. Patience and a varied menu of appropriately sized live and frozen foods are essential during acclimation, and the provision of high-quality food is closely tied to reproductive success.
Mating
Sphaerichthys vaillanti is a paternal mouthbrooder: the male incubates the fertilised eggs in his buccal cavity rather than constructing a bubble nest. There is no foam-nest building at any stage. The species exhibits the reversed sexual dimorphism described in Morphology — the female is the more brightly coloured sex and takes an active role in courtship display, while the cryptically coloured male ultimately bears the brooding burden.
Spawning behaviour differs from the typical Betta-style embrace of most labyrinth fishes: in Sphaerichthys the embrace is nearly upright rather than horizontal, with eggs deposited on the substrate or released in open water before the male collects them into his mouth. The female may assist in gathering eggs toward the male. The entire spawning act is generally unhurried and can be easily missed in a well-planted or leaf-littered aquarium. Observed pairs engage in extended courtship interactions before spawning commences, and the species is social enough that groups of six or more individuals, which develop their own social hierarchies, provide more reliable spawning conditions than isolated pairs.
Breeding
Once eggs are collected into the male's mouth, incubation lasts approximately 7 to 20 days, after which the male releases 10 to 40 fully formed fry. The wide range in incubation time reflects temperature variation and individual differences. Clutch sizes are small relative to egg-scattering labyrinth fishes, reflecting the greater parental investment of mouthbrooding; the number of fry released per brood is typically 10–40.
The male should not be disturbed or fed during incubation, as stress may cause him to spit or swallow the brood prematurely. Many breeders move the brooding male to a dedicated tank for the incubation period. Fry are released at a relatively advanced stage compared with the larvae of bubble-nesters and are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp and micro-worms as first foods. Water conditions throughout the breeding cycle should mirror the species' blackwater origins: very soft, acidic water (pH 4.0–6.0), warm temperatures (77–82 °F), and minimal water movement. A tannin-stained environment produced by Indian almond leaves or peat filtration markedly improves spawning readiness and fry survival.
In the aquarium
Sphaerichthys vaillanti is an expert-level species, not a fish for community tanks or casual gourami keepers. Its narrow water-chemistry requirements, sensitive temperament, and feeding demands place it firmly in the specialist category. A dedicated species tank of 15–20 US gal or more, set up to replicate Bornean blackwater conditions, is the appropriate environment: very soft, highly acidic water (pH 3.5–6.0), temperature 73–81 °F, extremely low conductivity, gentle sponge or air-driven filtration to avoid turbulence, dim lighting, and a heavy covering of floating plants and Indian almond leaves on the substrate. The dark, leaf-littered environment reduces stress and brings out natural behaviour including the striking spawning coloration of females.
The species is best kept in a group of six or more to allow the social hierarchy and pair bonds that precede spawning to form naturally. It is not suitable with active or boisterous tankmates; similarly sized, slow, blackwater specialists — other Sphaerichthys species, Parosphromenus species, or small Betta species from comparable habitats — are more appropriate companions if a community arrangement is desired. It must have access to the water surface for air breathing at all times. Water chemistry should be maintained carefully and consistently; rapid fluctuations, especially increases in pH or hardness, can be fatal. The species is also sensitive to the quality and freshness of the water, requiring regular small changes with properly conditioned, acidified replacement water.
Conservation
Sphaerichthys vaillanti is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 18 January 2019. The listing is based on criterion B1ab(iii,v): the species has a restricted geographic range within the Kapuas drainage and has experienced significant ongoing decline in habitat quality and population size. The primary threats documented in the IUCN assessment are peat swamp loss and aquatic ecosystem degradation across West Kalimantan — driven by illegal gold mining, deforestation, agricultural conversion (particularly palm oil expansion), overfishing, invasive species introductions, and aquaculture development in the Kapuas basin. These pressures have caused substantial and continuing losses of the species' core blackwater peat swamp habitat.
Being confined to a single drainage system in a landscape undergoing rapid land-use transformation makes S. vaillanti particularly vulnerable: there is no large buffer population outside the Kapuas basin to absorb local declines. Captive breeding has been achieved by dedicated hobbyists in Europe and elsewhere, and maintaining viable captive populations is increasingly important as a conservation hedge. Aquarists keeping and breeding this species are encouraged to source only captive-bred stock, to share breeding success within specialist networks, and to avoid purchasing wild-caught fish except as part of documented conservation breeding initiatives.
