The honey gourami is a small labyrinth fish from the still, heavily vegetated waters of the Ganges and Brahmaputra basins in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal — a species whose modesty in size is offset, in breeding males, by a wash of warm amber and rust that gives the fish its common name. Though often overshadowed in the trade by its close relative the dwarf gourami, Trichogaster chuna is a hardier and more adaptable fish, equally at home in the sun-dappled beels and flooded rice paddies of Bengal as in a well-planted aquarium. It is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Trichogaster chuna was described by Francis Buchanan-Hamilton in 1822 in his account of the fishes of the Ganges system. Buchanan-Hamilton's original description placed the species in what was then an imprecise genus; the valid name under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Trichogaster chuna (Hamilton, 1822), with parenthetical authority reflecting the subsequent transfer from the original generic placement. The species belongs to the family Osphronemidae — the gouramis — within the order Anabantiformes, and sits in the genus Trichogaster alongside the dwarf gourami (T. lalius), the thick-lipped gourami (T. labiosa), and the banded gourami (T. fasciata).

The specific epithet chuna derives from the Bengali vernacular name 'Chuna-khalisa' or simply 'Chuna', meaning lime — possibly a reference to the pale or yellowish ground colour of the fish in certain lights. The genus name Trichogaster compounds the Greek thrix (hair) and gaster (stomach), alluding to the characteristic thread-like pelvic fins that hang below the belly of gouramis in this group, acting as sensory organs. English-language common names include honey gourami and honey dwarf gourami; Bengali speakers also know it as Boicha.

Morphology

Trichogaster chuna is a small, laterally compressed fish. FishBase records a maximum total length of 5.5 in, though most individuals in the wild and virtually all aquarium specimens remain well below that, typically reaching 1.5–2 in. The body is slender relative to the more robust dwarf gourami, with a rounded snout, a small upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding, and the long, filamentous pelvic fins that are the signature of the genus — these thread-like extensions are rich in tactile and chemosensory receptors.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Females are a drab silvery-yellow with a faint brown lateral stripe running from snout to tail base. Breeding males undergo a striking transformation: the head and ventral surface flush a deep burnt-orange to honey-gold, the dorsal surface darkens to blue-black or slate, and the fins take on colour. Outside breeding condition males are not dramatically different from females. Like all labyrinth fishes, the species possesses a suprabranchial organ — the labyrinth — that allows it to breathe atmospheric oxygen directly, an adaptation to the warm, often oxygen-depleted environments it inhabits.

Habitat

Trichogaster chuna occupies a broad range of lowland, still or very sluggish freshwaters across the Indo-Gangetic Plain and adjacent areas. Its habitat includes ponds, beels (oxbow lakes and floodplain wetlands), ditches, irrigation canals, flooded fields, and the vegetated margins of rivers. Seriously Fish notes heavy aquatic vegetation as a consistent feature: the species shelters and forages among plant stems and floating leaves, and males build their bubble-nests beneath broad leaf surfaces. The fish is most abundant in low-altitude habitats subject to seasonal inundation during the monsoon (June–October), when floodwaters expand the available habitat enormously before receding.

Distribution records confirmed via GBIF and secondary sources span the Ganges drainage in India and the delta and floodplain in Bangladesh, the Brahmaputra basin (Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh), and Nepal. Water conditions in these habitats are typically warm (around 72–81 °F), slightly soft to moderately hard, and on the acidic to neutral side of the pH scale; FishBase cites a representative pH of 6. As a facultative air-breather, the honey gourami tolerates the low dissolved-oxygen conditions common in stagnant, vegetation-choked water.

Feeding

In the wild, Trichogaster chuna is a micro-predator and opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates from the surface film and water column — insects, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton. The upturned mouth is well suited to surface feeding, and the species spends much of its time at or near the top of the water column where prey items and air are both available.

In the aquarium it is an undemanding feeder. It accepts high-quality flake and micro-pellet foods as a staple and responds well to varied live and frozen offerings: Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), bloodworm, and small Tubifex. Live Daphnia in particular are relished and are a reliable way to condition fish before breeding. The species feeds by sight and picks at food items individually rather than lunging at a mass of food, so it does best when fed small amounts several times daily rather than one large meal.

Mating

Trichogaster chuna is a bubble-nester. Males construct a floating raft of air bubbles bound with mucus and fragments of plant debris, typically tucked beneath a broad floating leaf or in a sheltered corner near the surface. The nest-building drive is strong in sexually mature males: they may begin constructing even without a female present, and courtship intensifies once a gravid female is introduced.

Courtship is vigorous. The breeding male intensifies his coloration to a deep amber-gold over a slate-black head and flares his fins, swimming in tight circles around the female and driving her toward the nest. Temporarily monogamous pair bonds form for spawning. Spawning takes place beneath or beside the nest in the characteristic osphronemid embrace: the male wraps his body around the female, which releases eggs while upside-down, and fertilises them simultaneously. The eggs, being lighter than water, float up into the bubble mass.

Breeding

Once spawning is complete the male assumes sole responsibility for brood care — a pattern typical of bubble-nesting gouramis. He retrieves any eggs that sink, repairs gaps in the nest, and guards the bubble raft aggressively against all intruders, including the female, who should be removed at this point to avoid injury. The eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at typical breeding temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, and the larvae hang vertically from the bubble mass for a further two to three days while their yolk sacs are absorbed.

Once the fry are free-swimming, the male's guarding instinct wanes and he too can be removed to prevent predation. The fry are tiny and require the smallest of first foods — infusoria, paramecia, commercial liquid fry food, or freshly hatched brine shrimp — for the first week or so. Because T. chuna fry develop their labyrinth organ from around three to four weeks of age, the water surface must remain humid (covering the tank with a glass or cling film) during this critical window; exposure to cold air can damage the developing organ. Growth is moderate; juvenile colour begins to develop within a month or two, and breeding condition is reached at around six months.

In the aquarium

The honey gourami is widely regarded as one of the most suitable gouramis for the planted aquarium. It is hardier and more disease-resistant than the closely related dwarf gourami, less prone to the bacterial and viral conditions that can decimate T. lalius in the hobby. It is peaceful with other species of similar temperament and size, making it a natural fit for community tanks with small tetras, rasboras, small loaches, and Corydoras catfish. Males can be territorial toward one another, particularly when breeding, but in a sufficiently large or well-decorated tank a male–female pair or a small mixed group is practical.

A tank of around 23.5–31.5 in length provides adequate space for a pair or trio. Heavy planting with broad-leaved floating plants (such as frogbit or Amazon frogbit) is both aesthetically appropriate and functionally important: the floating canopy retains moisture at the surface (critical for the labyrinth organ), provides refuge, and anchors the bubble-nest. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter or a spray bar turned toward the tank wall — since strong current disrupts nest-building and stresses a species adapted to still water. Water temperature in the range 72–81 °F and a pH from mildly acidic to neutral suits it well.

Conservation

Trichogaster chuna is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 12 October 2009. The species is wide-ranging across the heavily populated Indo-Gangetic Plain, where it is broadly adapted to disturbed and man-made aquatic environments — ditches, rice paddies, irrigation channels — that many more specialised freshwater fishes cannot tolerate. This ecological flexibility underpins its LC listing despite the significant degradation of natural wetland habitats across its range.

Pressures on the species include drainage and conversion of floodplain wetlands, water pollution from agricultural runoff and domestic waste, and collecting for the ornamental fish trade. Although the honey gourami is popular in the hobby, it is also readily bred in captivity and tank-bred stock is widely available, which reduces wild-collection pressure compared with more difficult-to-breed species. Ongoing monitoring of the Ganges and Brahmaputra wetland systems is warranted as land-use change and water extraction continue to alter the low-altitude habitats on which the species depends.
