Taxonomy & naming

Gagata cenia was described by the Scottish surgeon and naturalist Francis Hamilton (then Francis Buchanan-Hamilton) in 1822, in his monograph on the fishes of the Ganges and its tributaries. Hamilton placed the species in the genus Gagata, which has since been retained as valid. The family Sisoridae — the torrent catfishes of South and Southeast Asia — encompasses several genera of bottom-dwelling catfishes adapted to fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams and river margins, and Gagata sits firmly within this family.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Gagata cenia (Hamilton, 1822) as the valid combination. The genus has been revised at various points, and early workers placed some Gagata material under broader genera common to 19th-century ichthyology; the current placement is stable. The type locality is the Ganges drainage of India, and the species is part of a small genus of similar-looking sisorids distributed across the Indian subcontinent and neighbouring drainages.

Morphology

Gagata cenia is a compact catfish, reaching approximately 4 in standard length as an adult — small by catfish standards but not trivially so. The body is elongate and somewhat depressed, with the broad, flattened head typical of bottom-huggers that press themselves against the substrate in flowing water. The mouth is subterminal and adapted to picking invertebrates from sand and gravel. Three pairs of barbels — one maxillary and two mandibular — are present, as in most catfishes.

The skin is entirely scaleless and unplated — Gagata cenia carries no bony armour, unlike the callichthyid or loricariid catfishes. This naked skin makes the fish noticeably more sensitive to dissolved toxins and medications than a scaled or plated species. Stiff, locking pectoral and dorsal fin spines are present; these can tangle in a net and jab the keeper, so handling in a container is strongly advised. The spines are not reported as notably venomous, but a jab from a locked spine is uncomfortable regardless.

Habitat

Gagata cenia is native to the Ganges river system of the Indian subcontinent. As a sisorid catfish it is associated with cleaner, faster-flowing or well-aerated reaches of rivers and their tributaries rather than with sluggish lowland backwaters. The Ganges drainage spans a range of elevations and seasonal conditions, but sisorids in general favour substrate-rich, relatively clear-water reaches where current provides oxygenation.

Water temperatures in the natural range are moderate to cool — FishBase records approximately 68–77 °F as the preferred thermal window, which is cooler than many popular tropical aquarium fish and overlaps with what might be considered a temperate-tropical transition zone. The water is not a soft, blackwater environment; Gangetic rivers carry moderate mineral loads and neutral to slightly alkaline pH, reflecting the geology of the catchment. This is a clean-water, moderate-current fish rather than a stagnant-warm-blackwater one.

Feeding

Gagata cenia is a nocturnal benthic omnivore and micro-predator, foraging across sand and gravel substrates after dark for small invertebrates — chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, detritus, and similar bottom-dwelling prey. Like most sisorids and nocturnal catfishes, it is inactive and hidden during the day, emerging once the lights go out to systematically work the substrate.

In the aquarium it will accept sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and similar prepared and frozen foods. Because it feeds nocturnally and competes poorly with faster, diurnal fish, food should be offered after lights-out to ensure it actually reaches the catfish rather than being consumed by tankmates first. It does not need live food to thrive, but relishes frozen invertebrate-based items.

Mating

No detailed account of the mating behaviour of Gagata cenia in captivity or the wild has been documented in the available literature. As a sisorid catfish from riverine habitats it is likely to be a seasonal spawner in nature, driven by changes in water temperature, flow, and daylength that accompany the monsoon cycle in the Ganges drainage, but the specifics of courtship and mate selection remain unknown.

In the aquarium

Gagata cenia is rarely encountered in the trade and is a specialist's fish. Its adult size of around 4 in SL means a modest aquarium can house it, but the water requirements are non-negotiable: clean, well-filtered, moderately cool water (68–77 °F) at neutral to slightly alkaline pH. It is not a fish for a warm, soft-water community tank — the cooler temperature and water quality requirements separate it sharply from the majority of tropical community setups. A dedicated cool-water hillstream or Asian riverine biotope is the appropriate setting.

Provide a sandy or fine-gravel substrate with plenty of hiding places — smooth rocks, driftwood caves, and PVC sections all work. This catfish is strictly nocturnal and will stay hidden during daylight hours; a tight-fitting lid is advisable since many catfishes (and sisorids in particular) can move surprisingly well across wet glass at night. Two care points are critical: first, the scaleless skin makes Gagata cenia meaningfully more sensitive to copper-based treatments and many medications than a scaled fish — dose at half the normal rate or avoid entirely, and instead use fish-safe alternatives; second, the locking pectoral and dorsal spines can tangle fatally in a net and deliver a sharp jab, so always move this fish in a smooth-sided container, never in a mesh net.

Conservation

Gagata cenia has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is Not Evaluated (NE) by that standard. FishBase notes it under a Data Deficient context, reflecting limited distributional and population data for this species. It is native to the Ganges drainage, one of the most heavily utilised river systems on Earth, which is subject to severe pressures including water extraction, agricultural runoff, sedimentation, damming, and pollution from urban and industrial sources.

While no targeted assessment of the species' conservation status exists, the broader trend for clean-water riverine catfishes in heavily impacted South Asian rivers is cause for concern. Gagata cenia's apparent preference for cleaner, well-oxygenated water makes it potentially vulnerable to habitat degradation, though without population-level studies this cannot be stated with confidence. Aquarium demand is minimal given the species' rarity in the trade, so collection pressure is likely low. Any specimens available for sale are probably wild-collected.
