Callopanchax occidentalis is a West African annual killifish native to the coastal rainforests and humid forested savannas of Sierra Leone and western Liberia, with a possible extension into Guinea. Like all members of its genus, it lives in temporary pools that evaporate completely each dry season — the adults perish, but diapausing eggs buried in the substrate survive the drought and hatch when the rains return. Males carry vivid metallic colouration and have earned a devoted following among specialist killifish keepers; the American Killifish Association recognises dozens of collection localities, each cultivated as a distinct hobbyist strain. The IUCN assessed the species as Least Concern in 2019, though threats from mining, deforestation, and agricultural pollution in Liberia place pressure on individual populations.

Taxonomy & naming

Callopanchax occidentalis was described by Henrik S. Clausen in 1966; the authority is presented in parentheses because the species has been moved from the genus in which Clausen originally placed it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Callopanchax occidentalis (Clausen, 1966). The genus Callopanchax belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae — the African annual killifishes — and within the American Killifish Association classification system the species falls into Class 11 alongside Scriptaphyosemion, Archiaphyosemion, and Nimbapanchax, reflecting their shared biogeographic and morphological affinities among West African forest killies.

Huber's Killi-Data (1996), published by the Société Française d'Ichtyologie at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, serves as the primary bibliographic reference for killifish taxonomy and is the main source used by FishBase for Callopanchax collecting localities. The species epithet occidentalis is straightforward Latin for 'western', denoting its distribution in West Africa at the western fringe of the annual killi belt. The genus name Callopanchax combines the Greek kallos (beauty) with Panchax, a former catch-all genus for Old World killies — broadly meaning 'beautiful Panchax'. The name Callopanchax huwaldi is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 3 in for males, with 3.5 in TL also noted in some sources — a modest size typical of the West African annual killifish guild. The body form is elongate and slightly compressed, the head broad and flat, and the jaw large, well-suited to snapping invertebrates at the water surface and in the substrate. Like other Callopanchax, males develop intense colouration: the flanks are typically covered in iridescent blue, green, or red spangles arranged in rows or irregular patterns over a darker base, and the fins carry contrasting colours and sometimes red or orange borders. Females are substantially drabber, with brownish or olive tones and reduced pattern, making sexual identification straightforward at a glance.

The body is built for life in shallow, still water: the dorsal and anal fins are positioned far back, providing manoeuvring precision at low speed rather than sustained swimming performance. The mouth is superior, angled upward to intercept prey at or near the water surface. These structural features are common across the annual killies and reflect the shared ecological pressures of life in ephemeral forest and savanna pools.

Habitat

The species occupies pools, swamps, and the swampy margins of brooks in rainforest and humid forested savanna (FishBase). Its native range spans the coastal lowlands and interior plateaux of Sierra Leone — from the Little Scarcies River drainage in the north to the Lofa River drainage on the Sierra Leone–Liberia border — and continues into western Liberia; the IUCN assessment also lists Nigeria within the range and notes Guinea as a possibility. Hobbyist collection records through the American Killifish Association document localities including Teme-Yellah, Kabak, and Mangata, among others, each contributing distinct strains to the killifish hobby.

Water chemistry at collection sites reflects the soft, often acidic nature of West African forest and savanna pools: FishBase records a pH of 6.3–7.0, hardness of 1–6 dH, and a temperature range of 68–75 °F. These are small, seasonally drying water bodies — typically forest floor pools, roadside depressions, and seasonal floodplain swamps — characterised by leaf litter, humic acids, low conductivity, and high surface-to-volume ratios that make them warm quickly and evaporate during the dry season. The habitat is benthopelagic in character: the fish spends much of its time close to the substrate or in the water column just above it, rather than at the surface.

Feeding

Callopanchax occidentalis is a carnivore, feeding on worms, crustaceans, and insects in the wild (FishBase; IUCN Red List assessment). The broad invertebrate diet is typical of annual killies inhabiting temporary pools, where prey availability fluctuates dramatically between the flush of aquatic invertebrates early in the rainy season and the impoverishment of pools as they shrink. The upturned mouth is effective at taking surface insects — including emerging midges and mosquito larvae — and bottom-feeding on benthic invertebrates and detritus-associated fauna.

In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of live and frozen foods: daphnia, artemia (brine shrimp), bloodworm, tubifex, and small invertebrates are all readily taken. Feeding a varied diet that includes live foods maintains colour intensity in males and supports reproductive condition. As with most annual killies, the fish is an active, visual hunter and responds strongly to moving prey.

Mating

Callopanchax occidentalis is an annual soil-spawner. As pools begin to shrink at the approach of the dry season, males intensify their courtship displays, spreading their fins and flashing their metallic flanks before rivals and females. Spawning is a bottom-directed event: the pair aligns side by side and drives together into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or leaf-litter detritus — releasing eggs and sperm simultaneously as they burrow. The eggs are deposited individually and left buried a centimetre or more below the surface.

The mating system in the wild is understood to be polygamous; males are strongly territorial and will spar intensely for access to females and prime substrate. The female's drab colouration likely serves a cryptic function, reducing her visibility to predators during the vulnerable period of substrate diving. In the hobby, pairs are often isolated in dedicated spawning tanks with a deep layer of peat or coconut coir as the spawning medium, giving the keeper control over which locality strains are bred and preventing hybridisation.

Breeding

The defining feature of the annual killifish life history is diapause: the buried eggs enter a state of metabolic arrest that allows them to survive the complete evaporation of the pool during the dry season. FishBase records an incubation period of approximately three months in the substrate — the eggs await the return of the rains before completing development and hatching. In nature this synchronises hatching with the sudden expansion of habitat and the bloom of invertebrate prey that accompanies the first rains. Wild adults die when the pool dries; the population persists entirely through the egg bank in the mud.

In the aquarium, keepers replicate this cycle by collecting eggs from the peat spawning medium, removing the medium, lightly pressing it to drain excess water, sealing it in a plastic bag or container, and storing it at room temperature (around 68–75 °F) in a dark cupboard for two to three months. After the diapause period the peat is re-wetted — often by flooding it with shallow, soft, slightly acidic water — and fry emerge over a period of days. Fry are small but active and should be started on microworms or freshly hatched artemia nauplii. Growth is rapid and fish can begin spawning within a few months. The short life cycle means that maintaining a species requires ongoing breeding effort rather than the long-term husbandry of a slow-growing aquarium fish.

In the aquarium

Callopanchax occidentalis has been kept in specialist killifish circles for decades and the American Killifish Association maintains a substantial literature on the species — 25 articles in the Journal of the American Killifish Association alone, covering collecting trips, locality strains, and breeding methodology. The fish is regarded as demanding compared to many annual killies: FishBase notes it is very difficult to maintain, and the combination of a short lifespan, the need for cycled peat storage, and sensitivity to water quality makes it a species for experienced keepers rather than beginners.

A small, heavily planted or simply furnished aquarium with a dark substrate and low, diffuse lighting suits the species well. Soft, slightly acidic water matching the parameters of its natural range — pH 6.3–7.0, hardness below 6 dH, temperature 68–75 °F — is important; the species is less tolerant of elevated hardness or pH than some other annual killies. Males are aggressive toward each other and should not be kept together in small tanks; a pair or a harem of one male with two or three females is the standard approach. The lid must be tight-fitting, as killies are accomplished jumpers.

Hobbyist collection records document strains from Teme-Yellah, Kabak, Mangata, and other sites in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Within the killifish community, maintaining locality-pure strains and avoiding hybridisation between populations is considered an ethical obligation — each strain may represent a genetically distinct population with its own conservation value, and hybrid fish complicate both the hobby record and potential captive-assurance roles.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Callopanchax occidentalis as Least Concern in October 2019 (published 2020, version 2025-2), citing an extent of occurrence of 283,401 mi² and noting that while the area of occupancy is more restricted (estimated 40–2,0 mi²), the species is not considered to meet thresholds for a threatened category at present. The range covers Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria, with Guinea considered possible. Population trend is listed as unknown.

The assessment nonetheless records meaningful threats in Liberia, which holds a substantial portion of the species' range: mining operations, deforestation, and industrial and agricultural pollution are all identified as pressures on the wetland habitats that support this species. Annual killies are inherently vulnerable to habitat loss because their entire population in any given pool can exist only as a buried egg bank during the dry season — a single pollution event or drainage operation timed during that period can extirpate a local population completely without any adult fish surviving to recolonise. The species' apparent tolerance of a range of habitat conditions, and its presence in the aquarium trade through which captive insurance populations are maintained, offer some buffer against localised extinction. Continued monitoring of its habitats in Sierra Leone and Liberia — both countries with active deforestation and extractive industry pressure on lowland forest wetlands — remains important to verify that the current Least Concern assessment remains accurate.
