Todd's killifish is a West African annual killifish restricted to the Lower Little Scarcies river drainage of western Sierra Leone, where it inhabits shallow, seasonal pools that fill with each wet season and evaporate completely during the long dry months. Like all members of its genus, Callopanchax toddi survives this cycle not as a dormant adult but as a drought-resistant egg buried in the substrate — the adults spawn directly into soft sand or peat, then die as the pool dries, leaving their eggs in arrested developmental diapause until the rains return. In the aquarium it is an exacting but rewarding species: males display a warm golden-brown livery adorned with blue and gold gill covers and richly coloured fins, while females carry a characteristic dark lateral bar that intensifies during courtship. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2020, citing a relatively wide extent of occurrence across the Sierra Leone–Guinea border region.

Taxonomy & naming

Callopanchax toddi was described by Ernst Ahl in 1924, with the parenthetical authority notation indicating the species has since been transferred from its original genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Callopanchax toddi (Ahl, 1924). The genus Callopanchax belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae, the African annual killifishes of the tribe Fundulopanchacini, a group that includes such well-known genera as Fundulopanchax and Scriptaphyosemion. Within Callopanchax, toddi is one of four recognised species alongside C. occidentalis, C. huwaldi, and C. monroviae — all substrate-spawning annuals from the Upper Guinea forest block.

The specific epithet toddi honours an early collector or patron whose first name is not recorded in the original description; the identity of 'Todd' has not been definitively established in the subsequent literature. The genus name Callopanchax is a compound of the Greek kallos ('beauty') and the genus name Panchax, itself a vernacular term historically applied to a wide range of Old World killifishes before systematic revision reduced its scope. The common name Todd's killifish reflects the specific epithet directly.

Morphology

Callopanchax toddi reaches a maximum of 3 in total length (FishBase), making it one of the larger members of its genus. The body plan is typical of the Callopanchax group: moderately robust, somewhat laterally compressed, with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding. The caudal fin is rounded to slightly lanceolate, and the dorsal fin is set well back, roughly opposite the anal fin — a characteristic placement in annual killifishes.

Male coloration is the defining attraction of this species. The body is warm golden-brown, richly suffused in good light, with a pattern of darker patches or reticulations that varies in intensity with mood and condition. The gill covers and cheeks are marked with blue and gold iridescence punctuated by red spots, lending the fish a jewelled appearance. Fin margins are edged in maroon and blue, and the fins themselves carry red pigmentation through their rays. Females are considerably plainer: a golden-brown body with a faint blue sheen on the operculum, translucent reddish-brown fins, and a dark lateral bar that becomes conspicuous and well-defined during breeding activity — the bar is also visible on males during courtship, serving as a behavioural signal.

Habitat

The native range of Callopanchax toddi is centred on the Lower Little Scarcies river drainage in western Sierra Leone, with the IUCN assessment extending the confirmed range into the Guinea border region — an extent of occurrence exceeding 64,0 mi² and an area of occupancy above 2,186 mi². The habitat is the seasonal, temporary pool: shallow depressions in forest-margin and savanna settings that fill during the rainy season and contract to mud or dry out entirely in the dry months. These pools are characteristically soft-bottomed, accumulating layers of leaf litter, detritus, and fine organic mud that constitute the spawning substrate.

Water conditions in such pools tend toward soft and mildly acidic. The British Killifish Association records field-consistent aquarium parameters of pH 6.2–6.8, hardness of roughly 5–7 dH (85–119 ppm), and temperatures between 20 and 81 °F, with the fish most active around 73–75 °F. FishBase gives a temperature range of 72–75 °F for this species specifically. The chemistry reflects the leaching of humic acids from the leaf litter and organic matter that characterises these pool environments — similar conditions to other West African forest annuals in the Upper Guinea ecoregion.

Feeding

Callopanchax toddi is an active, opportunistic predator in the wild, taking small invertebrates, aquatic insects and their larvae, zooplankton, and occasional surface-fallen prey from the temporary pool environment. The relatively large gape for a fish of this size is consistent with a predatory diet.

In the aquarium the British Killifish Association notes that the species strongly prefers live foods: daphnia, cyclops, and glassworm (chironomid larvae) are enthusiastically taken. The fish is reported to be unenthusiastic about dry flake foods, though some individuals can be coaxed onto frozen alternatives. Offering a varied diet that includes live or frozen invertebrates — daphnia, bloodworm, artemia — keeps fish in peak colour and condition. Given its annual life cycle and relatively short lifespan, maintaining nutritional quality matters more than in long-lived species.

Mating

Callopanchax toddi is an annual killifish, and the mating system is organised entirely around substrate spawning with diapausing eggs — the defining reproductive strategy of the African annual killi group. Males are territorial and display actively toward females, with fin erection, lateral posturing, and the intensification of the dark lateral bar on both sexes serving as the primary visual signals. Courtship can be vigorous, and females require cover or the attentions of multiple females to distribute male aggression.

Spawning occurs by the pair diving together into the soft substrate — sand, peat, mud, or detritus — and depositing eggs directly into it with a characteristic shuddering embrace. The British Killifish Association records approximately 42 eggs per spawning session using the sand method, with clutches taken over multiple sessions. Eggs are adhesive enough to hold in the substrate but are deposited individually rather than in masses. The pair readily consume unprotected eggs, so hobbyists using the sand method remove and incubate eggs separately rather than leaving them in the spawning tank.

Breeding

The eggs of Callopanchax toddi enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — once deposited in the substrate, matching the biology of the pool itself, which passes through a dry phase each year. In captivity, breeders manage this by one of two incubation routes. In the water method, separated eggs are kept moist in shallow water and hatch after approximately seven weeks. In the peat method — which mimics the dry-season burial more closely — eggs are stored in slightly damp peat or coir for six months or more before being re-wetted, at which point hatching occurs within days of the peat being submerged. Both approaches are valid; the peat method typically produces better synchrony of hatching and may improve overall hatch rates.

Fry are large enough at hatching to take newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii immediately, which simplifies rearing compared with some smaller-egged killies. Growth is rapid — annual killies must complete their entire life cycle within a single wet season in the wild, and captive-raised fish reflect this urgency. Wild adults rarely survive to see a second rainy season; in the aquarium, with stable conditions and good feeding, C. toddi can live two to three years, somewhat longer than its wild counterparts. The species is listed as not a beginner's fish by the British Killifish Association, partly because of its egg-eating tendency and the care required in managing the incubation period.

In the aquarium

Callopanchax toddi rewards experienced killifish keepers who can provide the species' specific requirements but is not recommended as a first killifish. The British Killifish Association explicitly notes it is difficult to maintain relative to hardier aquarium killies, with two chief challenges: a strong tendency to eat its own eggs (requiring dedicated spawning setups) and a potential for aggression toward smaller tankmates. A species setup — either a pair or a trio of one male to two females — in a well-planted aquarium of 15–20 US gal is the standard approach.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic, matching field conditions: pH 6.2–6.8, hardness 5–7 dH, temperature 72–79 °F. Good filtration is important, but surface turbulence should be kept gentle as the species inhabits still pools naturally. A substrate of fine sand with a peat layer accommodates natural spawning behaviour; alternatively, a separate, shallower spawning tray filled with peat or sand can be provided for controlled egg collection. Floating plants or surface cover reduce stress and encourage the fish to colour up fully.

For spawning, a peat or fine-sand spawning container at the bottom of the tank is standard practice. Eggs are collected every two to three weeks, labelled with the date, and stored either damp in sealed bags (peat method) or in shallow water (water method). The fish is rarely seen in the mainstream ornamental trade but moves regularly among killifish society members and specialist breeders in the British and European killifish association networks.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Callopanchax toddi as Least Concern in January 2020 (assessment ID 134753837), citing an extent of occurrence exceeding 64,0 mi² and an area of occupancy above 2,186 mi² across the Sierra Leone–Guinea border region. The assessment justifies the LC listing on the grounds of a relatively wide range and the absence of documented major, range-wide threats at the time of assessment.

Nonetheless, the species' ecology warrants continued attention. As an annual killifish dependent on temporary seasonal pools embedded in the Upper Guinea forest block, it is inherently vulnerable to habitat modification. Deforestation, conversion of seasonal wetlands for agriculture, and changes in rainfall seasonality driven by regional climate shifts all pose risks to the pool habitats on which the species depends. The Upper Guinea forests are themselves a global biodiversity hotspot under significant deforestation pressure. Unlike riverine species with more stable habitats, annual killies leave no refuge population of adults during the dry season — the entire population exists only as buried eggs for months at a time, making any disturbance or alteration of the substrate during that period potentially catastrophic at a local level. Monitoring of Sierra Leone's seasonal pool systems, and assessment of any range-wide population trends, would strengthen future conservation evaluations of this and related Callopanchax species.
