Taxonomy & naming
Cynodonichthys brunneus was described by Seth Eugene Meek and Samuel Stillman Hildebrand in 1913, with the type locality recorded as Toro Point, Canal Zone, on the Atlantic drainage of Panama. The authority is presented in parentheses because the species was originally placed in a different genus before being moved into Cynodonichthys. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Cynodonichthys brunneus (Meek & Hildebrand, 1913) as the valid combination.
For much of the twentieth century the species was widely known in the killifish hobby and literature under the combination Rivulus brunneus, reflecting the long-standing broad application of the genus Rivulus to most New World rivulines. Phylogenetic revisions beginning in the 2000s progressively disaggregated that large catch-all genus, and Central American and Colombian mainland rivulines were transferred to the resurrected or newly recognised genus Cynodonichthys. The American Killifish Association continues to list this fish under its former Rivulus name in some legacy resources, which is useful to know when searching older literature.
The specific epithet brunneus is Latin for 'brown' or 'brownish', a straightforward reference to the species' overall colouration. The genus name Cynodonichthys combines the Greek kynodous (dog-toothed) with ichthys (fish), alluding to the dentition characteristic of the group.
Morphology
Cynodonichthys brunneus is a slender, moderately compressed rivuline reaching approximately 2.5 in standard length. The body plan is typical of the non-annual New World rivuline: a somewhat cylindrical to slightly laterally flattened form with a subterminal to terminal mouth, a rounded or slightly pointed snout, and a rounded caudal fin. The dorsal fin is placed well posteriorly, as is characteristic of the genus, and sits above or slightly ahead of the anal fin.
Colouration follows the cryptic brown theme implied by the name. The flanks carry a brownish ground colour with faint darker banding or spotting depending on mood and conditions, and the finnage may show limited iridescent patterning in males under good lighting. Sexual dichromatism is present but subtle by killifish standards — males show more distinct colour and finnage development than the plainer females. The species is not among the more vividly coloured Cynodonichthys, which likely contributes to its modest profile in the ornamental trade.
Habitat
Cynodonichthys brunneus is native to Panama, where it inhabits permanent freshwater systems on the Atlantic slope. The type locality, Toro Point in the Canal Zone, is situated in the humid lowland forest zone of the Caribbean slope, an environment characterised by year-round rainfall, stable water levels, and heavily shaded forest streams and pools. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, freshwater, non-migratory, and tropical, and notes it is a facultative air-breather — a feature shared by several rivulines that occupy warm, occasionally oxygen-stressed waters beneath dense forest canopy.
In keeping with its permanent-water lifestyle, C. brunneus does not migrate to ephemeral pools or undergo the boom-and-bust cycle of annual killies. It occupies the upper water column and the spaces among roots, aquatic vegetation, and leaf litter in forest streams. Water conditions at the type locality and related sites are soft and slightly to neutrally acidic: the hobbyist resource It Rains Fishes records a pH of approximately 6.0 and very soft water (0 GH), which is broadly consistent with Atlantic-slope Panamanian forest streams where soil and geological substrates produce low-mineral, lightly tannin-stained runoff.
Feeding
Like other Cynodonichthys, C. brunneus is a surface-oriented predator of small invertebrates. In the wild it feeds on aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and other small invertebrates that fall or drift near the surface film or among marginal vegetation. The forward-positioned, slightly upturned mouth is well adapted to surface or near-surface feeding.
In captivity the species readily accepts live and frozen small foods. Daphnia, Artemia nauplii (which the literature notes are taken by fry from the earliest feeding stages), small chironomid larvae, and micro-worms are all suitable. Well-conditioned adults benefit from regular live food offerings; this also promotes spawning behaviour. The species has a relatively small mouth and should be offered appropriately sized prey rather than coarse frozen foods intended for larger fish.
Mating
Cynodonichthys brunneus is a non-annual plant and mop spawner. Rather than burying eggs in substrate to survive dry-season desiccation, the species spawns continuously in permanent water, depositing a small number of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, roots, or floating spawning mops each day when pairs or trios are well conditioned. This mode of reproduction — steady, low-clutch-per-day, long-season — is the defining feature separating non-annual rivulines from their annual relatives.
The courtship behaviour involves the male pursuing the female into plant cover or near a mop, where spawning occurs with the male pressing alongside the female and fertilising each egg as it is deposited. It Rains Fishes records approximately 5 to 15 eggs per day under good conditions, a figure consistent with other Cynodonichthys. The congener C. magdalenae has been recorded producing 90 to 100 eggs over a three-day spawning period from a well-conditioned trio, suggesting similar daily productivity. Males are active in pursuit and may stress a single female if she is not in condition; pairs or one-male-two-female trios are preferable setups.
Breeding
Eggs are adhesive and left in place among plant leaves or spawning mop fibres after deposition. Unlike annual killi eggs, they require no dry incubation in peat — they develop directly in water and hatch after an incubation period typical of the genus (generally one to three weeks depending on temperature, though species-specific incubation data for C. brunneus are sparse in the available literature). The eggs can be picked from the mop or plant individually and incubated in small containers of the same water, which protects them from predation by the parents.
Fry are small at hatching but are immediately free-swimming and can take freshly hatched Artemia nauplii as a first food. This is an advantage over the smallest-fry annual species, which require infusoria or paramecia at first feeding. It Rains Fishes notes that the fry begin accepting live Artemia nauplii from the outset, and regular feeding with small live foods produces rapid early growth. Maintaining the breeding colony at a temperature between 20 and 79 °F (FishBase range) and providing clean, well-filtered water supports consistent spawning. The species can live up to three years in captivity, giving breeders a productive window substantially longer than annual killies.
In the aquarium
Cynodonichthys brunneus is rated as difficult to maintain by FishBase, a classification that reflects sensitivity to water quality rather than demanding chemistry requirements. The species prefers soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (around pH 6.0, very soft) and temperatures in the range of 68–79 °F. It does not tolerate nitrate accumulation well, and regular partial water changes with suitably soft, dechlorinated water are essential for long-term health and continuous spawning.
A tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable: It Rains Fishes explicitly flags the species as a skilled jumper. The aquarium should be densely planted or furnished with floating cover and spawning mops to satisfy the species' preference for sheltered, near-surface habitats and to provide natural spawning sites. A small, species-specific tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding pair or trio; the species is not suited to a general community aquarium with larger or faster-moving fish. Gentle filtration (sponge filter) avoids disturbing the surface film and the spawning mops.
C. brunneus is not a common species in the hobby and is mainly kept by dedicated killifish enthusiasts. Within that community it is traded under both its current Cynodonichthys combination and the older Rivulus brunneus name, and prospective keepers should search under both. Its relative hardiness as a non-annual and its willingness to spawn regularly once established make it a rewarding fish for those who can provide appropriately soft, warm, and stable water.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cynodonichthys brunneus as Data Deficient (DD) in 2019 (published 2020), a status confirmed by the American Killifish Association's cross-reference to the same assessment. Data Deficient does not mean a species is secure — it means the information needed to assign a threat category is lacking. For a small, habitat-specialist fish confined to the forest streams of Panama's Atlantic slope, the absence of monitoring data is itself a concern.
The broader context for Atlantic-slope Panamanian freshwater fish is one of incremental pressure: forest clearance for agriculture and cattle, hydrological modification associated with the Canal Zone and surrounding infrastructure development, and water-quality degradation from runoff all affect the shallow, forested stream habitats these rivulines depend on. Cynodonichthys brunneus occupies a restricted native range, and its permanent-water lifestyle means it cannot escape via the ephemeral-pool-to-pool dispersal route that some annual killies use. A targeted assessment of its distribution and population status within Panama would be the essential first step toward a meaningful conservation evaluation.
