Taxonomy & naming
Cynodonichthys elegans was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1880 as Rivulus elegans, from the Río Cauca in Colombia; a lectotype (NMW 60544:1, in Vienna) was designated by Huber in 1992. For over a century the species sat in Rivulus, the broad holding genus for New World rivulines, with Costa (2006) and Vermeulen (2013) placing it in the subgenus Cynodonichthys. Costa's 2011 revision raised Cynodonichthys to genus rank for the trans-Andean rivulines of Central America and northwestern South America, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the current valid name as Cynodonichthys elegans (Steindachner, 1880) — the parenthesised authority marking the change of genus — while noting that some recent authors (Huber et al. 2023) continue to use Rivulus in a broad sense.
The genus name combines the Greek cyno- (dog) and odon (tooth), referring to the large canine-like tooth on each side at the front of the upper jaw. The specific epithet elegans is Latin for 'elegant' or 'fine'; the allusion was not explained, possibly referring to the attractive red spotting on the sides.
Older literature and databases list this fish as Rivulus elegans; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Cynodonichthys elegans as the valid combination, followed here.
Morphology
Cynodonichthys elegans is a slender, near-cylindrical killifish with the typical rivuline body plan: a slightly flattened dorsal profile, a dorsal fin inserted well back on the body near the caudal peduncle, and rounded caudal and anal fins. FishBase records a maximum length of 2.5 in TL.
As is usual in the genus, males are the more intensely pigmented sex, with reddish spotting over the flanks — the likely inspiration for the name elegans — while females are plainer, typically olive-tan with reduced markings and clear to lightly pigmented fins. The subterminal to terminal mouth is directed upward, suited to intercepting surface-fallen or mid-water prey.
Habitat
Cynodonichthys elegans is a Colombian endemic. The type locality is the Río Cauca, the great tributary of the Magdalena that runs between the Western and Central Cordilleras; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes gives the species' distribution as Pacific coastal river basins in Antioquia, in the country's northwest. Either way this is trans-Andean South America — west of the main Andean chain, wholly separate from the Amazon and Orinoco lowlands where most other South American rivulines live.
Detailed field data for this species are sparse. FishBase characterises it as a benthopelagic, non-migratory freshwater fish of tropical waters around 72–79 °F, with pH from about 7 — notably less acidic than the blackwater figures often quoted for Amazonian rivulines — and explicitly flags it as not a seasonal killifish: its waters persist year-round. Members of the genus elsewhere in Colombia and Central America typically occupy small forest streams, creek margins, and shaded pools, and there is no indication this species departs from that pattern.
Feeding
Like other members of the genus, Cynodonichthys elegans is a generalist predator of small invertebrates. The upward-angled mouth and mid-water to surface position suggest a reliance on fallen or floating insects, terrestrial invertebrates landing on the water surface, and aquatic invertebrates such as small crustaceans, worms, and insect larvae near the substrate or in the water column.
In captivity, rivulines of this type accept live and frozen foods readily — mosquito larvae, blackworms, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops, and small earthworm pieces are all appropriate staples. Like many killifish, individuals in a species tank tend to feed near the surface and mid-water rather than the bottom. Regular feeding with a variety of appropriately sized live or frozen invertebrate foods maintains colour and breeding condition.
Mating
Cynodonichthys elegans is a non-annual killifish and, like its congeners, a plant-spawner. FishBase records it explicitly as not a seasonal killifish: it lives in permanent water, and its reproduction follows the extended, repeated spawning of the non-annual rivulines rather than the compressed rainy-season burst of the annuals.
In this group, courting males pursue females persistently, displaying lateral body postures and flaring fins to show their colour. Spawning takes place near fine-leaved vegetation, plant roots, or fibrous mops, where eggs are attached singly to the substrate and left by both parents without further attention. Species-specific accounts of courtship in C. elegans have not been published in accessible literature; the description above is the well-documented pattern of the genus.
Breeding
As a non-annual rivuline, C. elegans produces eggs that develop continuously in water — they are not buried, do not enter diapause, and need no dry storage, the clear practical divide between this genus and the annual killies of the same continent. At tropical maintenance temperatures, incubation in this group runs to about two weeks rather than the months of annual-egg diapause.
In an aquarium setting, the practical approach for the genus is one or more dark spawning mops — synthetic wool or Java moss clumps — near the surface or mid-depth. Eggs can be picked from the mop every few days and transferred to shallow hatching dishes of the same water at the same temperature. Fry of the larger rivulines take newly hatched Artemia nauplii, microworms, and fine powdered foods from the start, and growth is steady. A pair or trio maintained in good condition produces small but steady numbers of eggs over many months. Published breeding reports specific to C. elegans are scarce; keepers should expect to work from the genus template.
In the aquarium
Cynodonichthys elegans is suited to a small, well-planted species tank or a carefully chosen community of similarly sized, non-aggressive killies or small characins that share its water requirements. A tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a pair or small group. Floating plants and emergent vegetation are appreciated and double as natural spawning sites; a tight-fitting lid is essential, as rivulines are reliable escape artists.
Water parameters should target a temperature of 72–79 °F and a pH around neutral — FishBase records pH from about 7 for this species, in contrast to the strongly acidic blackwater sometimes assumed for South American rivulines. The species is little known in the hobby and rarely traded; fish matching its description should have collection data attached. Males can be competitive with one another; a single male with one or two females is the standard keeping arrangement.
Conservation
No formal IUCN Red List assessment has been published for Cynodonichthys elegans; the species is Not Evaluated. That is common across the genus: most Cynodonichthys are small, cryptically distributed stream fishes, and the systematic break-up of the old Rivulus aggregate has outpaced conservation evaluation.
The pressures on small-stream fishes of northwestern Colombia are nonetheless real. The Cauca valley is one of the country's most intensively farmed and settled corridors, and the lowlands of Antioquia carry active mining and deforestation fronts; small endemic stream fishes with narrow ranges are among the vertebrates most exposed to such change. Formal evaluation of C. elegans — beginning with modern field surveys to establish where it still occurs — would be a productive contribution to the conservation baseline for trans-Andean rivulines.
