Cynopoecilus fulgens was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2002, with the original description published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 13(1):11–24. The species belongs to the melanotaenia complex within the genus Cynopoecilus — a morphologically cohesive assemblage of annual killies restricted to the coastal plains of southern Brazil and adjacent Uruguay. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid combination as Cynopoecilus fulgens Costa, 2002, placing it in the family Cynolebiidae, the South American annual killifishes.
The genus name Cynopoecilus is a compound of the Greek kyōn (dog) and poikilos (many-coloured, variegated), though the allusion is uncertain; the name was established in 1927 by Myers. The specific epithet fulgens is Latin for 'shining' or 'gleaming', a direct reference to the brilliant golden longitudinal spots that adorn the flanks and sides of the male.
Morphology
Cynopoecilus fulgens is a small, slender killifish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in in males and approximately 1 in in females — sizes typical of the cynolebiid annual killifishes of southern Brazil. The dorsal fin carries 16–18 soft rays and the anal fin 22–25 soft rays, meristic values that help distinguish the species from its close relatives in the melanotaenia complex.
Sexual dimorphism is strongly expressed, as is characteristic for annual Cynopoecilus. Males display longitudinal rows of golden or yellowish spots on a darker brownish or olivaceous body, with additional dark spotting concentrated on the caudal fin. The overall effect is a glittering, metallic iridescence — the feature that inspired the species name. Females, by contrast, are a subdued, cryptically mottled brownish or tan, making them nearly invisible in the leaf-litter and detritus of their natural pools. Both sexes are slender-bodied with a rounded caudal fin and relatively large eyes.
Habitat
Cynopoecilus fulgens inhabits the low-lying coastal plain ephemeral wetlands of southern Brazil. Its confirmed range spans Rio Grande do Sul and the extreme south of Santa Catarina, with distribution records now extending into the Mampituba River basin at Passo de Torres, confirming a modest range northward into Santa Catarina state. These are seasonal environments: shallow depressions, roadside swales, campo grassland pools, and flooded margins of permanent water bodies that fill with winter and spring rains and dry to bare mud over the summer.
The pools that sustain this species are soft-bottomed, often stained with organic material, and typically shallow enough to warm rapidly and lose oxygen quickly as they shrink. The fish lives its entire above-ground existence — from hatching to spawning — in these temporary environments. Water chemistry records for the ephemeral wetlands of coastal Rio Grande do Sul generally indicate soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral water, though specific pH and temperature data for the exact habitats of C. fulgens are not recorded in the available literature. Feeding
A diet study published in the Italian Journal of Zoology (2013) by Keppeler, Lanés, Rolon, Stenert, and Maltchik examined feeding ecology in Cynopoecilus from the southern Brazilian ephemeral wetlands, finding a generalist strategy. In keeping with the biology of most small cynolebiid annuals, the diet centres on small invertebrates — aquatic insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, and other zooplankton — with the composition shifting according to what the pool produces at a given time.
Body size and sexual dimorphism in gape size likely influence dietary niche partitioning between males and females, as the study keywords indicate feeding selectivity as a focus. In the aquarium, Cynopoecilus fulgens accepts a range of small live and frozen foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, tubifex, and similar invertebrate prey. Prepared micropellets are taken by established individuals. Frequent, varied small meals suit the metabolic demands of a fast-living annual fish.
Mating
Cynopoecilus fulgens is an annual killifish and spawns by substrate-diving — the pair plunge together into the soft mud, peat, or detritus of the pool floor to deposit eggs that will survive the dry season in diapause. Courtship involves active male pursuit and display: males flash their golden iridescence in parallel displays and direct approaches toward females. Receptive females allow the male alongside their body, and the pair then orient headfirst and drive into the substrate together, fertilising the egg as it is deposited and buried.
Spawning takes place repeatedly across the pool's productive season, with pairs distributing eggs through the substrate over many sessions rather than in a single event. Males are competitive and may be aggressive toward one another; in the hobby it is common practice to keep one male with one or two females in a species aquarium to reduce conflict. The buried eggs have no contact with adults after deposition — the reproductive investment ends at the moment of substrate entry.
Breeding
The eggs of Cynopoecilus fulgens are deposited into soft substrate and enter diapause: arrested embryonic development that allows survival through the complete desiccation of the pool. In nature the eggs remain buried in dry mud for weeks to several months, depending on the length of the dry season, and hatch when rains refill the pool. The embryos pass through a sequence of developmental stages before diapause is entered, and hatching is triggered by re-wetting after a sufficient dry period.
In the aquarium the annual cycle is replicated on peat or coir fibre: after a conditioning period for the adults, a shallow layer of moistened peat is introduced as a spawning medium. The pair dive regularly over several weeks; the medium is then removed, squeezed to damp-dry condition, sealed in a bag, labelled with the date, and stored at room temperature for six to twelve weeks. To hatch, the peat is placed in a shallow container and soft, slightly acidic water is added — fry appear within hours to days if the drying period has been sufficient. Fry are large enough at hatching to accept freshly hatched Artemia nauplii immediately, and growth is rapid. The fish can reach sexual maturity within a few months, consistent with the compressed annual life cycle.
In the aquarium
Cynopoecilus fulgens appeals primarily to killifish specialists. It is a small, demanding fish whose appeal lies in its biology and the spectacular male colouration rather than its ease of care; maintaining it well requires understanding the annual cycle and providing the conditions to complete it. A low, covered aquarium of 10 US gal is sufficient for a trio, planted sparsely with fine-leaved plants and furnished with a layer of peat or coconut fibre substrate several centimetres deep for spawning.
Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, kept cool to moderate — the cool winters of coastal Rio Grande do Sul suggest this species is not a fish for persistently warm tropical aquaria, and temperatures in the range of 64–75 °F are likely more appropriate than the 82 °F common to many tropical tanks. Regular small water changes and good filtration maintain the water quality needed for active breeding adults. Only the hobbyist willing to run a dry-storage cycle will keep this species across generations; without the peat-storage step the line dies with the adults at the end of their short life span.
Cynopoecilus fulgens is rarely encountered in the broader hobby and is principally maintained by members of killifish societies who circulate egg packages between collectors. Its restricted range and threatened-wetland habitat make ex-situ hobbyist collections of modest conservation significance if managed to preserve genetic diversity.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cynopoecilus fulgens as Near Threatened (NT) in November 2018 under criterion B1b(iii), indicating a restricted extent of occurrence combined with a continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. The species is endemic to the coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul and the extreme south of Santa Catarina — a geographically limited region that has undergone significant transformation for agriculture (soy and rice cultivation) and urban expansion along the Brazilian Atlantic coast.
The temporary pools and ephemeral wetlands on which this and related Cynopoecilus species depend are among the least protected freshwater habitats in southern Brazil. They are routinely drained for agriculture or infilled during urban development, and their seasonal nature makes them difficult to recognise as fish habitat. The IUCN assessment notes continuing decline in habitat area, extent, and quality as the primary driver of threat. Distribution records from the Mampituba River basin in Santa Catarina confirm the species persists at the northern edge of its range, but do not substantially alter the conservation picture — the underlying pressure on coastal ephemeral wetlands continues. Hobbyist maintenance of captive stocks and participation in killifish society egg-exchange programmes provides a secondary safeguard for this and related species.
